The Trends Of Violence Throughout The United States
1.Describe the trends of violence throughout the history of the United States. How do the rates of
violent crime in the United States compare to rates of these crimes internationally?
During ancient times and the Middle Ages, crime was basically a rural problem rather than a
urban problem and it wasn t until after the 1960s in the United States that urban rates for homicide
exceeded those of rural areas. In Canada, the rural homicide rate still exceeded the urban rate in the
1970 and a number of studies have shown that countries with greater inequalities in income
distribution have higher murder rates. In the Unites States, racial disparity is highest in arrest rates
for crimes of violence and the arrest rate for blacks is about eight times the rate of whites.
Prior to the 1930s, the United States had no national crime statistics but information reflects that at
the turn of the twentieth century, violent crime rates were equal to the present levels. Although the
willful homicide rate declined from its peak in 1933, this dip in crime was somewhat misleading
due to better treatment methods and more survivors of crime but by the seventies, the sheer volume
of violence had surpassed the means of recovering victims. At the beginning of the early 1990s, the
United States was enjoying unprecedented low levels of criminal violence although the rate of
homicide by black, urban juveniles exploded due to the crack cocaine epidemic, poverty, single
parent households, educational

The Aspects Of Happiness And Happiness
Happiness is not always easy to achieve. Life throws curve balls and it s hard to swing at all of
them. I try to stay happy all the time or I fake it. I don t want ruin other people s happiness by
being upset. I am blessed to say I have a happy life but there is plenty of ways I could increase my
own happiness. Sleeping more than I do right now would increase my happiness. Doing more for
others and spreading kindness is another way I could have a happier life. Lastly, planning
events or activities beforehand would not only make me happier but also less stressed. I would
love to be happier, but I need to be committed to make changes in my life. Sleep is a great thing
and I wish I could do it more often. I ve never been a good sleeper. My parents think it s because
of my phone, but I put it up when I want to sleep and I end up staring at the ceiling for an hour or
two. According to Lemola et al. (as cited in Boehm and Kubzansky, 2012), there was a study
involving children and, .... those who were the most optimistic slept a sufficient amount each
night and took less time to fall asleep (2010). For me to sleep more and be happier, I need to have a
positive outlook on life. I always try to see the brighter side of situations but sometimes, I find it
immensely hard to be positive when other people are pessimistic. I need to push myself and be the
better person. If being more optimistic will help me sleep more, I will gladly be positive in every
situation so I will be

Examples Of Existentialism In The Prussian Officer
The great works of literature that dominated the twentieth century, were largely influenced by and
representative of the pivotal movements, philosophers, and scientists of the era. The Prussian
Officer is primarily reliant on both Existentialist philosophy, as well as Freudian thought. Both
serve to explore the psychological entities of the Captain and the orderly, and how their
simultaneous awakenings led to their mutual destruction. The core of Existentialismis within the
feelings of angst and desperation a person feels when realizing and beginning to understand the
absurdity of the world, and how he attempts to overcome it. The orderly is the paradigm of this
existential dilemma at the beginning of the story, he is instinctual,... Show more content on

The orderly originally exemplifies this ideal, he is grounded and is not generally swayed by the
contempt and externalized frustration of the Officer. As the plot progresses, however, he
gradually becomes more and more distanced from himself, as a fierce battle insinuated by the
Officer between his conscious and subconscious lead to the deterioration of the orderly s identity,
as well as his sanity. On the surface, his conscious attempts to do what it has always done follow
the orders of the Officer without the need for justification. Below the surface, however, his
subconscious grows irritated and perplexed by the Officer s fierce disdain. Readers experience a
paradigm shift within the context of the narrative. The once unperturbed temperament of the
orderly begins to decay, his contemptuousness towards his oppressor simmering and finally
erupting in a spontaneous and volatile act of violence, in which he murders the Officer, and
eventually dies himself, in a fatal daze of physical thirst and

Social Media And Its Effect On Self Image
Would you consider yourself an important person? The majority of young people in today s
society would say that they indeed are important, as opposed to the very few numbers of people
who felt this way in the 1950 s, according to Jean Twenge in her book Generation Me. Debora Lima
agrees with Twenge and suggests that this is caused by social media in her article Social media
plays large part in self image. Cathy Payne also agrees as she explains the inflation of cosmetic
surgeries in her article Botox or your bills? Plastic surgerywins out. Twenge, Payne, and Lima all
agree that there is a change in self image in today s young society, yet they all argue different sub
points on this subject. Overall, there has been a noticeable change in self image.
In chapter 2 An Army of One: Me of Generation Me, Jean Twenge discusses self image. First, she
explains how Gen Me ers are focused on the self and how their self esteem is much higher than
Baby Boomers . The author reports how children are encouraged to focus on themselves. This
sometimes creates narcissism instead, declares the author. Another thing brought up is how
teachers are beginning to not criticize students because it may damage their self esteem. To
conclude, Twenge argues how Gen Me ers have a positive self image, but this may not be a good
thing (Twenge 44 71).
While discussing the change in self image, Twenge s target audience is comprised of Gen Me ers
and Baby Boomers. Both of these groups would

Cardiac Medical Practice Group Of Approximately 15...
n February 2002, a cardiologist named Dr. Robert Emerick was hired by the Cardiac Study
Center as an employee. Cardiac is a medical practice group of roughly 15 cardiologists. The
center has provided care to patients in Pierce County who have heart disease since 1966. It has
four offices, each one near a hospital that serves as a recommendation source for Cardiac. Dr.
Robert Emerick trained in medicine in Memphis, Tennessee for around three years before getting
employed at Cardiac. Two years after his employment, Emerick became a shareholder of Cardiac.
When he became a shareholder, Emerick signed a shareholder employment agreement. The
agreement included the covenant not to compete, which asserted a promise not to practice
competitively in Pierce County or Federal Way for the duration of five years, if and when he
leaves Cardiac. In August 2005, Cardiac began to get complaints about Emerick s conduct. Several
physicians actually stopped referring patients to Cardiac due to his conduct. When this became a
problem, Cardiac s Professional Conduct Committee met with Emerick to discuss the complaints.
Not only did they meet once, but twice because there were more complaints after the first
discussion. Even after addressing the complaints a second time, Emerick s behavior did not
change. In February 2009, the Conduct Committee suggested that the Board of Directors discipline
Emerick because he did not make an effort to change. Thus, the Board fired Emerick on May 1,
2009. After

Aspects Of Body Image
Body image is the perception that a person has of their physical self and the thoughts and feelings
that result from that perception. These feelings can be positive, negative or both and are influenced
by individual and environmental factors. Many modern celebrities are known for being excessive
sharers on social media.
For instance, the Kardashians are notorious for posting daily glamorous and often lingerie clad
images on Instagram that attract several million likes. But it s not just images of attractive
celebrities that flood social media. Friends, acquaintances and strangers post images of
themselves too, often editing them to disguise face blemishes, make cheeks rosier or to make
their nose look smaller. When people look at these attractive images on social media, research
shows they often compare their own appearance to those images and think they re less attractive
than the images they see.We know these comparisons can make women unhappy with their
appearance and put them in a bad mood. Given body dissatisfaction is an important predictor for
eating disorders, we need to know if some types of comparisons are worse for people s body image
than others. ( Instagram Feeds Do More Damage to Body Image Than Billboards: Study )

Analysis of Direct Costs
Analysis of Direct Costs
Direct material cost is the price laid down on items that are used in the fabrication of a product or
that are used as service providers. The price caters for the transportation of the items from the
manufacturer to the consumer, in transit cover and the cost of any unforeseen events which may
include damages that might occur, substandard work, and overruns. In the direct material cost, the
buyer is always supplied with a copy of the contract form which is to be signed after he/she has
gone through and is contented with the laid down rules. The same buyer sends a local purchase
order to the manufacturer on the goods or items that he/she requires. In relation to other direct costs,
the charges are endorsed on specific costs objective(s) such as include special tooling and test
equipment, computer services, long distance costs, and telephone costs. Therefore, the buyer is
expected to know whether the seller can be accountable in case of any eventuality and the system
estimate ( Lesson 5 Analysis of Direct Labor , n.d.). One of the challenges that are experienced in
the analysis of direct material costs and other direct cost is overestimation and especially on
renovation projects. It has become a challenge in the sense that contractors submit their quotations
without putting into consideration necessary some factors. These factors include visiting the site
where the project is in order to know the exact materials that are required for the

chief elements of its strategy? The generic strategy that Wal Mart employs is mainly a low cost

One way is by making information readily available to both the company and the suppliers
through online systems. This allows information to be transmitted quickly and products to be
made efficiently. The purchasing and distribution activities of Wal Mart are also parts of the
value chain that are very efficient. They try to centralize their purchasing as much as they can.
This basically gets rid of the middleman, which then saves money. An automated distribution
center will further increase the efficiency of Wal Mart s value chain. Wal Mart also is sure to
keep labor costs to a minimum. By making sure the costs of their value chain are low, Wal Mart
is able to be a low cost industry leader. Furthermore, another element apparent in the low cost
strategy of Wal Mart is the cost conscious corporate culture. The company was started by a man
named Sam Walton who developed the company to have every day low prices . He is also
known for saying if we work together, we ll lower the cost of living for everyone . Every since
Sam Walton started this company, the entire company has strived to be a low cost leader. Various
leaders of Wal Mart have never sought to change the philosophy the company was built on, but
continued to build upon it. It is the focus that underlies everything they do. It is also an approach
that has garnered success. Low cost strategies are unable to work on products that are uncommon

Racism In America Essay
I choose the topic Racism in today s society because it is a topic that dramatically effects our way
of living. I believe racism is not something that not only affects certain people, racism affects
everyone.
My position on the topic of racism is that it s a negative faction in our society that results in death
of blacks and other minority groups.
The importance of racism in America.
Racism in the U.S. is important and should be know because it is an important part in our history
that shaped America. People are not born racist, people who are racist were usually raised in an
atmosphere that embraced it. Racism is a negative faction in our society that affects you and
everyone around you. Racism can sometimes be the result in deaths of minority groups. With
racism in every corner it leads to people questioning their safety in a government that may have
racist authorities who can misuse their power.

Taking a Look at Hinduism
Many religions offer an exact path to the afterlife; illuminated by various rules and regulations that
one must follow to reach enlightenment. Hinduism, on the other hand, is much more complex,
offering multiple ways to achieve moksha and providing many answers to the ancient question of
what happens after we die? Many people think that Hindus believe in many deities, but the Hindu
concept of Godis much broader than that. In fact, Hinduismitself encompasses much more than just
one specific set of religious beliefs. While some Hindus believe that God is a divine being with
certain identifiable attributes, others believe that God cannot be defined and is an all pervading
being that extends beyond everything. Although some beliefs differ, the majority of Hindus see
the concept of God in multiple ways. Among these are the concepts of God as one and many,
God and the soul, God as sound, God as image, God in nature, cows, and avatara. One of
Hinduism s most distinguishing features is the concept of multiple gods. These multiple gods are
manifestations of the various powers of the divine. Hindus believe that the all pervasive God is
both one and many. Because this concept carries the idea of God as an omnipresent being,
everything can be seen as being God s form. Hindus worship many Gods, but they also believe that
the divine is singular or one. These Gods are representations of different aspects of the overall God.
Although their worship of multiple

Cutting on such frills may help in improving the bottom line. But cuts on frills accompanied by
thrust on factors where company s offering is below the customers expectations provides an
excellent opportunity for cost cutting and serving enhanced value to the customers, which may
draw customers from outside the current market space, just on the boundary of niche segments.
Most popular no frills strategy is pursued by Southwest Airlines which based its strategy on clear
understanding of the segment of customers it was going to serve by operating the flight services at
lowest fares and prompt schedules. The clear understanding of expectations of the segment it was
going to serve and competitive value proposition that this segment was being offered by the

of low fares and adherence to schedules for its customers by keeping clear of facilities like baggage

Film is an art form that has the power to move its audience emotionally and intellectually by
creating impactful messages. Martin Scorsese creates depth and meaning in his 1976 film, Taxi
Driver by employing various film techniques. There are many theories on the film Taxi Driver and
its intended meaning. The films mise en scГЁne invites the audience to enter Travis state of mind,
arousing an array of interpretations on Travis, and consequently the central message of the film.
However, I would argue that there is a dominant message of loneliness and alienation that is made
particularly clear by the camerawork in the first scene in the night diner when Travis joins the other

The camera often takes on Travis point of view. By taking on Travis point of view the camera
invites the audience into Travis mindset, which as a result, empathizes his disconnect from
society. Travis attention often wanders in this scene and consequently, the camera wanders as
well. After Travis gets done with his, first and only, contribution to the conversation by telling a
story of a man who got his ear cut off, the camera cuts from a shot of Wizards point of view at an
eye level angle, to a close up of Travis at a higher angle tilted slightly downward. The difference
in the two shots provides a feeling of disorientation, which was used strategically to suggest
Travis is disoriented. Then the camera takes on Travis point of view in a tracking shot, which
pans right, showing two pimps sitting across from him; it is slow and deliberate. The shot
changes and pans left, stopping once the frame includes Travis, who seems oblivious to the
conversations around him. This sequence of shots shows how Travis s attention is apart from the
conversation and reiterates Travis inability to engage with others. Moreover, the camera
continues to follow observed details by Travis as the scene progresses. There is a high angle shot
of Travis as he drops an Alka Seltzer tablet into a glass. As Travis attention becomes consumed by

Representation Of Women In The Media Analysis
We live in an ageist society, which favours youth. Because of this, celebrities age is inherent in
the discourses (Van den Bulck, 2014, p. 63) about their persona and appearance. This is especially
true of female celebrities who come under constant scrutiny because our patriarchal society means
that there are different standards for men s and women s aging (Oberg, 2003, p. 126). MailOnline
provides perfect examples of older women s representations in the media demonstrating the public
obsession with youthfulness and that older female celebrities are rarely represented, but when they
are, they are usually shown as desexualised and unattractive. There are some exceptions, for

162). MailOnline probably only depicts Mirren as attractive as she is a blonde beauty with a
nicely toned body (Chester Smith, 2015). Sontag states, what makes these women seem
beautiful to us is precisely that they do not look their real age (1972, p. 36). In this way, these
apparently positive representations of older women are still just as bad for shaming women s
aged bodies as they starkly remind the audience that the sustainability of sexual attractiveness is
one of the most highly valued personal commodities in the media market (Garde Hansen, 2012,
pp. 161 162). Overall, aging women tend to be inadequately represented in the media for the
reason that these women bear the brunt of ageism because they are already devalued as female
(Cruikshank, 2009, p. 143). Additionally, because the patriarchy s ideal state for women is
docility (Sontag, 1972, p. 38), beauty standards and practices will continue to be enforced helping
to shame any appearance that differs from what society deems beautiful. Traditionally, this idea of
beauty almost always excludes the body fat, wrinkles, and grey hair typically found on older

does one follow Christ? Will the literary context of this passage affect its interpretation? These
questions and more will be answered below.

A heavy weight on the end times for those struggling to cope with the loss of their great temple
would be logical.
Jesus commands whoever follows him to deny himself and take up his cross and follow me (him).
The disciples would have likely been familiar with the imagery take up his cross would have
implied. Traditionally, crucifixion was a favored Roman torture and execution method from the
time of Alexander the Great to Constantine. After extensive flogging, the convicted person would
be forced to carry his own cross crossbar. The patibulum (crossbar), weighing around one hundred
pounds, was tied to the convict s outstretched arms as he made his way to his own execution. This
would obviously be an excruciatingly painful task. This is most certainly the image the disciples
thought of when Jesus was speaking to them.
Exegesis
Since the literary and historical contexts of this passage have already been taken into account, a
proper exegesis of Matthew 16:24 28 can be done. In the process, certain questions about the
passage will be answered. What does it mean for someone to be repaid according to what he has
done? How does this passage contribute to eschatological studies? How do the subtle nuances of
this passage affect the meaning? What does it mean to be a disciple of Christ?

Pc or Mainframe
Executive Statement
A mainframe is a very large, powerful, dedicated, multi tasking computer where enormous amounts
of data are processed, sometimes millions of records a day. The mainframe is set up for specific
applications and those applications only; which is totally different from a Personal Computer (PC).
A mainframe runs a custom operating system specifically written for particular applications while a
PC has a generic operating system such as Windows and is built to handle many different programs.
PC s are multi tasking but not dedicated with control of the resources usually handled by the
computer rather than the user having control over the amount of resources used by any given
application. For example, if you were to run ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

typically 8 9 feet tall, about 3 feet or more wide and they were made of grey colored steel. They had
lots of lights and dials and such. The data storage was reel to reel tape onto which data was
downloaded twice a day.
So how Big is Big?
The main purpose of a mainframe was to run commercial applications and large scale computing,
such as that done by the IRS, and banks where enormous amounts of data are processed sometimes
millions of records a day.
A typical mainframe has the following characteristics:
В·A mainframe has several CPUs.
В·Memory is hundreds of Gigabytes of RAM and It has tons of hard drive storage.
В·Its processing power is over 550 Mips.
В·It often has different cabinets for storage, input/ouput and RAM.
В·Distributes the workload over different processors and input/output devices. It can handle a large
number of users.
В·All processes are running on the host and not on the terminal.
В·Output is sent to the terminal through a program running (in the background) on the mainframe.
In my case it is called PIMS.
В·Nothing else goes over the line
Management processes, such as program management and task management, are separate. A
mainframe is usually associated with centralized computing where all computing physically takes
place on the mainframe itself (L. Mitzner, personal

Rise Of The Texas Republican Party
Rise of the Texas Republican Party
For decades, the state of Texas was Democratic and then suddenly in 1998 the state flipped to
Republican. Currently, Texas is the boldest Republican state in the country. For so long it was
Democrat and strongly so but it has been Republican now since the nineties. The big question
surrounding this topic is what happened to make it flip suddenly? Well, research provided a very
strong answer that I didn t expect to find. In 1988 two people were voted in that changed everything
for Republicans; Kent Hance and Judge Thomas Phillips were the first republicans voted in since
the Reconstruction. This kick started a Republican makeover of the state that all through the
nineties Texans saw Republicans overtaking Democrats in every area. To understand how this went
down in the nineties there must be an examination of the past. The Democratic party was the face of
Texas for a century until the Republicans came back stronger than ever.
First and foremost, Texas was not colonized by British settlers. This has always made it stand out
as a fiercely independent territory then later a state. The individuals who shaped and formed
Texas did so in such a way to hold tightly onto its fierce independence. This fierce independence
was fueled throughout the first several decades of Texas existence due to invading foreign armies
and the daily struggles of just surviving in the Wild West. Because of this, the people of Texas
developed strong work ethics and a

Bradbury Thompson
Graphic Designer: Bradbury Thompson
By K. Lee Goodrick
Patrick Kirk
ARTD 201
Due: March 28, 2007 Bradbury Thompson (1911 В– 1995) is often times called the father of
modern design and considered a pioneer among graphic designers (Father). As early as high
school, Bradbury showed a keen talent in the field of graphic design. He jumpstarted his career
when working in New York; and from that point he undertook many projects that made him
famous. Among those projects includes designing stamps for the postal office, redesigning World
Book Encyclopedia, Chicago Daily News, and even the Holy Bible. His work was not overlooked
and Bradbury received several awards for his works. Bradbury Thompson has left a very positive

project, the bible was published and placed on the market. The Bible was a huge success and
collected several awards and publications (Hoffman). In 1980 a second version was published.
This second version was smaller and was targeted to sell to families. Of course Bradbury s
success was not overlooked. In 1950, Bradbury received the National Society of Art Directors of
the Year award. In 1975 he received AIGA Gold Medal award. And finally, in 1977 Bradbury
was placed into the Art Director s Hall of Fame (Pioneer). As for my personal thoughts; besides
being extremely impressed by Bradbury Thompson s success I find it very interesting as to how
broad his different work reached. It really goes to show that graphic design can lead one to
several different types of work. After reading up on Bradbury Thompson I can only be
overtaken by motivation and excitement in hoping that my career can lead me to as many
exciting projects and places as Bradbury Thompson s did. As for Bradbury s work, he truly
makes several masterpieces and deserves all the respect, awards, and recognition. He does very
well at expressing meaningful concepts. I also greatly appreciate his interest in making the English

The Importance Of The First Language Acquisition
During the first two or three years of development, a child requires interaction with other language
users in order to bring the general language capacity into contact with a particular language such as
English. (Yule, The Study of Language, 2010)
It is very important for a child to hear a certain language and to interact with others who are using
this certain language in order to produce the language because a child is acquiring the language
from his environment as it is not genetically inherited. Hearing language sounds is not enough to
acquire a language, but interacting with others who are using this language is a crucial requirement
for the first language acquisition.
So, in order to speak a language, a child must be able to hear that language being used. (Yule, The
Study of Language, 2010)
A child who is doing so must be physically capable of hearing a language hearing sense and
producing sounds. Deaf infants stop making cooing and babbling noises after six months unlike the
normal hearing infants who are making these noises during their first year.
Under normal circumstances, human infants are certainly helped in their language acquisition by
the typical behavior of older children and adults in the home environment who provide language
samples, or input, for the child. (Yule, The Study of Language, 2010)
Acquiring a language should be by the help of others in a child`s environment like his mother,
father and grandparents who are using simplified

Atomic Bomb Dbq
The spring of 1945 marked the completion of the atomic bomb. Created by Franklin Roosevelt in
1939, the Manhattan Project had used 2 billion dollars of taxpayer money to build the atomic
bomb, equating to the most costly government project at the time. Political consequences of such
wasted expenditures if the atomic bomb was never detonated justified dropping the bomb. When
scientists finally witnessed its power in the demonstration at Alamogordo, New Mexico,
newfound repercussions of this weapon of mass destruction propelled the subject to heated debate.
Still, the majority opinion of government officials was to drop the bomb because it would reduce
lives lost. Or at least that is what they told the American people. The alternative plan was invasions
on Kyushu and Honshu, two strategic warfare locations of Japan which were to take place the
coming fall and spring. There was no doubt that many lives would be lost through these invasions.
Hisaichi Terauchi, Field Marshal of Japan, had already announced the execution of 100,000 Allied
prisoners to deter any invasions from taking place. Extreme Japanese war customs also heightened
Americans unwillingness to invade. Gyokusai, the Japanese term for suicide, was considered more
honorable than surrendering. Committed to fighting to the death, Prime Minister Hideki Tojo, in
1944, declared 100 million gyokusai if circumstances were deemed necessary. The entire nation of
Japan was prepared to die. Wartime estimates were imperative to

Essay Making Management Decisions
Making Management Decisions
ASSIGNMENT 1
Lewandowska Santhirasekaran
1.Principles of business planning and decision making
Decision Making is A commitment to action (Mintzberg, H., 1983, p. 188) ; Management decisions
are made for a lot of different reasons, mainly because decision making is a fundamental aspect of
the management functions and management decision making which makes it a key management
role. (M. Teale, V.Dispenza, J. Flynn, D.Currie, 2003, p. 10) (D. Boddy, 2008, p. 209)

According to the situation the LiveShows Ltd is at now, all of the decisions will be programmed , it
can be assumed that once programmed decision has been made, then the consequences will be
known. These decisions are normally characterised by a known set of objectives, and can lend
themselves to programmed decision making methods. Management science offers tools and
methodologies that enable the organisations to deal with managerial problems. It deals with
collection, interpretation and presentation of data; however it is important to remember and
understand the limitations, assumptions and specific applicability of the methods in question. (M.
Teale, V.Dispenza, J. Flynn, D.Currie, 2003, pp. 228, 229)
The decisions are based on business objectives and context; decision making types can also divide
into three, depending on how much the decision made will affect the business in terms of time and
direction; these include:
Strategic Decisions long term decisions that affect the direction of the business
Tactical Decisions medium term decisions based around how to implement a strategy
Operational Decisions short term decisions, also known as administrative decisions about how to
implement the tactics. (T. Hannagan, 2008, p. 425)

Ideal Men Women of the Heian Court based on “The Tale of...
Genji Monogatari or The Tale of Genji is a story that was written by Murasaki Shikibu during the
Heian period. It is a very well received work of Japanese literature and the first part of the story is
written with the main character being Genji, and then continues without him. I have no knowledge
of the second half of Genji Monogatari but it is in the first section of this tale the characteristics
and traits for ideal men and women of the society within the story can be gathered. The criteria for
an ideal man or woman in The Tale of Genjiwas the importance of the physical attribute of beauty,

The general community around Genji is probably similar in the audiences understanding of his
character because Genji was still only 17 at the time, and thus for them to lament based mostly
on his beauty is a portrayal of society s love for an ideal and perfect beauty. However, this
standard was not only put on males, but also placed on females. In chapter 2 of Genji
Monogatari they speak of many women and the physical characters that fit the ideal women is
that which is pretty, innocent, and young. The stress men put on beauty is shown in one
example said by the Chief Equerry of the story. In that example, the only thing that he found
disagreeable with one of his lovers was that lest her lack of looks offend me. Going back to
Genji s beauty, the men of Genji Monogatari must have been deeply obsessed with perfect beauty
as during chapter 2 they found Genji so beautiful they wished he was a woman. It is important to
note, however, that while the story emphasizes the importance of beauty in an ideal man or
woman, there is never an actual description of physical characteristics make a perfect beauty. In
any case, while beauty is subjective and not defined in Genji, it is clear that it is an important
opinion one must have for another before a person can be considered ideal. Chapter 2 of Genji
Monogatari touched on the physical appearance of woman and how they must look to be desirable,
but it also went in depth of the pluses and minuses of other

Sacrifice In Bruce Springsteen s Song, Nebraska
Music is something that is needed in everyday life. It fuels creativity, brings people together, and
it even helps people learn. In Bruce Springsteen s song, Nebraska , it tells the story of Charles

many people, and will forever haunt not only Nebraska, but the whole world. Lincoln Nebraska
seemed like the perfect place to live. It was a quiet town where everybody seemed to know each

of darkness, that everything seemed to change. On that night Charles Starkweather returned to a
Lincoln gas station, robbed the attendant for $100.00, and then led him out a few miles where he
proceeded to shoot him dead. (Spencer). This robbery and murder was just the start of the
gruesome spree that had yet to occur. Almost two months after the killing, with no lead for the

Beethoven Romanticism
Thanks to Beethoven, music was taken highly serious among the people and the literatures of arts.
During the nineteenth century, the first two decades were devoted to Romanticism. Literature
wasn t the only thing that poured out during this time period, so did the music. People such as
Jean Jacques Rousseau, who was an Enlightenment philosopher in the mid eighteenth century,
provided the Romantics with ideas on how to express themselves as opposed to what society
expected from one. These ideas led people to live an upbeat joyful life rather than a sluggish
boring one. However, Romanticism came to be during a time of war, and because of how freely
expressive the Romantics were they became know as rebels who went against the rules and
regulations. So rebellious that the Romantic composers were experimenting with chords that had
been off limits.
This time period also brought some spooky harmonies orchestral sounds, along with recognizable

Although the Romantics liked being different, most of their compositions were either miniature or

HB2/Criminal Justice drama
On the campaign trail, Governor John Bel Edwards promised to bring down Louisiana s
incarceration rate and to end the era of Louisiana being the most incarcerated state in the country
(and political entity in the world). Although Edwards (D Amite) has worked to this end by bringing
a broad criminal justice reform package before the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The narrow vote came after heated debate on the floor centered on the needs of low income
students. Though Foil initially agreed to an amendment that would direct any savings as a
result of HB117 to Go Grants (Louisiana s needs based scholarship program), the Baton Rouge
Republican later asked the House to remove the provision. In a move that seems out of character
to many, Baton Rouge Democrat Ted James encouraged his colleagues to support Foil s
measure: When we create a culture of low expectations we get what we ask for. We need to make
changes to TOPS I hope you follow my green light, the oft champion of low income families said.
Opposed by Governor John Bel Edwards (D Amite) and the Patrick F. Taylor Foundation (named
for the founder of the scholarship), HB117 is expected to meet resistance in the Senate. As Foil
attempts to up the GPA requirement from a 2.50 to a 2.75 advocates across the state will be
closely watching to see if Foil s tick sheet gets the necessary bump on the Senate side.
A scheduled vote on Baton Rouge Republican Steve Carter s Gas Taxbill was postponed
Wednesday amid concerns that it did not have the necessary support for House passage. Set to
raise the State s tax on gasoline by 17 cents per gallon, the measure would raise upwards of $500
million each year for transportation and infrastructure needs. HB632 would require a two thirds
majority for approval and current whip

Literary Devices Used in the Things They Carried Essay
Literary Devices Used In The Things They Carried
By: Tom Vennemann
The Things They Carried by Tim O Brien expresses the importance of a story truth, as opposed to
a happening truth by use of literary elements in his writing. The novel is about war and the guilt it
leaves on everyone involved in the war. Story truth is not exactly what happened, but uses part of
the truth and part made up in order to express the truth of what emotion was felt, which an important
thematic element in the novel is. The three literary devices he uses to express this are diction,
imagery, juxtaposition, and hyperbole. All of these elements allow the reader to identify emotion
that is expressed in each story, as though that were the complete truth.

Usage of imagery in The Things They Carried is what introduces a reader to the emotion that
was felt by O Brien. In this novel, imagery goes hand in hand with repetition. In The Man I
Killed, O Brien is constantly repeating the image of the boy that he killed in his mind, which
allows the reader to get a clear view of the boy. This is only a story truth, it is true to the reader
because that is simply what we are told to picture. Imagery is important because it describes the
setting and place, and what importance that played in the big picture of O Brien s war. Even though
it is not the exact truth, it expressed truth in the form of emotion. The emotion that his images
create in us is similar to the emotion that O Brien felt at the time of the event.
The exaggeration that O Brien expresses in his story, also known as hyperbole, gives the reader a
feeling of speaking with a man that just experienced the war of his life an hour before you two are
speaking. The emotion is

Germination of Cress Seeds
Background point 1:
There are several conditions that affect the germination of seeds. Most factors are external but there
are also some internal conditions that affect the germination of seeds, even though this is quite rare.
The most common and the most important external conditions and factors that affect the germination
of seeds are oxygen, water, temperature and also in some cases light or darkness. Some plants
require several variables for successful seed germination. As this is quite rare, this often depends on
the individual seed and its natural habit.
Let s focus on the most important factors that affect germination of seeds.
Firstly we have oxygen which is required by the seed that is germinating for metabolism. The ...

Background point 2:
In the world, there are two basic sorts of seed and they have been named monocotyledon
respectively dicotyledon. Dicot seed contains of two parts which have been named cotyledons.
Their job is to supply the food for the growing of the young plant. An excellent example of a dicot
seed is the bean seed. Dicot seeds consist of an outside cover, called seed coat, and also an embryo
inside the bean. The Greek word for two is dis , and that is where we get di from.
Seed which consists of only a single cotyledon are known as monocots. A corn seed is a very good
example of a monocot. The seed of a monocot stays in one piece and does not split up. As the
bean seed, the corn seed also has a seed coat, but this coat doesn t get off as easily. There is as well
a part of the seed called the endosperm and this is the part where the monocot plants store their
food. The Greek word for one is monos , and that s where we get mono from.
Of course seeds consist of several components, but the three main and most significant parts are the
seed coat, the endosperm and the embryo.
The outer membrane of the seed is known as the seed coat and that is the part of the seed that is
visible. The coat of the seed is often hard and very difficult to break. The outer membrane s
function is to protect the sensitive parts that are inside the seed from diseases and common
damages. Even though all seeds have a seed coat, there is

Immanuel Kant And The Categorical Imperative
Immanuel Kant, a German philosopher, specifically a deontologist, has two imperatives: the
hypothetical imperative and the categorical imperative. These imperatives describe what we
ought to do and are only applicable to rational beings because they are the only beings that
recognize what they ought or ought not to do. The hypothetical imperative is when an individual
s actions are reasoned by their desire, so they only act with the intention of fulfilling their
desires. The categorical imperative is what human beings ought to do for their own sake
regardless of whatever else they might desire. The categorical imperative has two formulations.
Kant s first formulation of the categorical imperative states that one ought to only act on maxims
that can be used as universal law. This formulation is based on its urgency and unity in the
society. When a maxim cannot be determined a universal law, then it is morally impermissible to
act upon it. Apply this formulation to the example of the lying promise: this cannot be willed as a
universal law because trust will no longer be a part of society. If everyone were to make a lying
promise to get money without retribution, then people will eventually recognize they are being
deceived, which will result in a more selfish community. When one wills something as a universal
law, then it is for the intention to better the state and community. This proves that the lying promise
is not a maxim to live by. Kant s second formulation of

  • 2. The Trends Of Violence Throughout The United States 1.Describe the trends of violence throughout the history of the United States. How do the rates of violent crime in the United States compare to rates of these crimes internationally? During ancient times and the Middle Ages, crime was basically a rural problem rather than a urban problem and it wasn t until after the 1960s in the United States that urban rates for homicide exceeded those of rural areas. In Canada, the rural homicide rate still exceeded the urban rate in the 1970 and a number of studies have shown that countries with greater inequalities in income distribution have higher murder rates. In the Unites States, racial disparity is highest in arrest rates for crimes of violence and the arrest rate for blacks is about eight times the rate of whites. Prior to the 1930s, the United States had no national crime statistics but information reflects that at the turn of the twentieth century, violent crime rates were equal to the present levels. Although the willful homicide rate declined from its peak in 1933, this dip in crime was somewhat misleading due to better treatment methods and more survivors of crime but by the seventies, the sheer volume of violence had surpassed the means of recovering victims. At the beginning of the early 1990s, the United States was enjoying unprecedented low levels of criminal violence although the rate of homicide by black, urban juveniles exploded due to the crack cocaine epidemic, poverty, single parent households, educational ... The Prussian Officer is primarily reliant on both Existentialist philosophy, as well as Freudian thought. Both serve to explore the psychological entities of the Captain and the orderly, and how their simultaneous awakenings led to their mutual destruction. The orderly originally exemplifies this ideal, he is grounded and is not generally swayed by the contempt and externalized frustration of the Officer. As the plot progresses, however, he gradually becomes more and more distanced from himself, as a fierce battle insinuated by the Officer between his conscious and subconscious lead to the deterioration of the orderly s identity, as well as his sanity. On the surface, his conscious attempts to do what it has always done follow the orders of the Officer without the need for justification. Below the surface, however, his subconscious grows irritated and perplexed by the Officer s fierce disdain. Readers experience a paradigm shift within the context of the narrative. The once unperturbed temperament of the orderly begins to decay, his contemptuousness towards his oppressor simmering and finally erupting in a spontaneous and volatile act of violence, in which he murders the Officer, and eventually dies himself, in a fatal daze of physical thirst and ... • 6. Social Media And Its Effect On Self Image Would you consider yourself an important person? The majority of young people in today s society would say that they indeed are important, as opposed to the very few numbers of people who felt this way in the 1950 s, according to Jean Twenge in her book Generation Me. Debora Lima agrees with Twenge and suggests that this is caused by social media in her article Social media plays large part in self image. Cathy Payne also agrees as she explains the inflation of cosmetic surgeries in her article Botox or your bills? Plastic surgerywins out. Twenge, Payne, and Lima all agree that there is a change in self image in today s young society, yet they all argue different sub points on this subject. Overall, there has been a noticeable change in self image. In chapter 2 An Army of One: Me of Generation Me, Jean Twenge discusses self image. First, she explains how Gen Me ers are focused on the self and how their self esteem is much higher than Baby Boomers . The author reports how children are encouraged to focus on themselves. This sometimes creates narcissism instead, declares the author. Another thing brought up is how teachers are beginning to not criticize students because it may damage their self esteem. To conclude, Twenge argues how Gen Me ers have a positive self image, but this may not be a good thing (Twenge 44 71). While discussing the change in self image, Twenge s target audience is comprised of Gen Me ers and Baby Boomers. Both of these groups would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many people think that Hindus believe in many deities, but the Hindu concept of Godis much broader than that. In fact, Hinduismitself encompasses much more than just one specific set of religious beliefs. While some Hindus believe that God is a divine being with certain identifiable attributes, others believe that God cannot be defined and is an all pervading being that extends beyond everything. Although some beliefs differ, the majority of Hindus see the concept of God in multiple ways. Among these are the concepts of God as one and many, God and the soul, God as sound, God as image, God in nature, cows, and avatara. One of Hinduism s most distinguishing features is the concept of multiple gods. These multiple gods are manifestations of the various powers of the divine. Hindus believe that the all pervasive God is both one and many. Because this concept carries the idea of God as an omnipresent being, everything can be seen as being God s form. Because of this, celebrities age is inherent in the discourses (Van den Bulck, 2014, p. 63) about their persona and appearance. MailOnline provides perfect examples of older women s representations in the media demonstrating the public obsession with youthfulness and that older female celebrities are rarely represented, but when they are, they are usually shown as desexualised and unattractive. In this way, these apparently positive representations of older women are still just as bad for shaming women s aged bodies as they starkly remind the audience that the sustainability of sexual attractiveness is one of the most highly valued personal commodities in the media market (Garde Hansen, 2012, pp. 161 162). Overall, aging women tend to be inadequately represented in the media for the reason that these women bear the brunt of ageism because they are already devalued as female (Cruikshank, 2009, p. 143). • 24. Rise Of The Texas Republican Party Rise of the Texas Republican Party For decades, the state of Texas was Democratic and then suddenly in 1998 the state flipped to Republican. Currently, Texas is the boldest Republican state in the country. For so long it was Democrat and strongly so but it has been Republican now since the nineties. The big question surrounding this topic is what happened to make it flip suddenly? Well, research provided a very strong answer that I didn t expect to find. In 1988 two people were voted in that changed everything for Republicans; Kent Hance and Judge Thomas Phillips were the first republicans voted in since the Reconstruction. This kick started a Republican makeover of the state that all through the nineties Texans saw Republicans overtaking Democrats in every area. To understand how this went down in the nineties there must be an examination of the past. The Democratic party was the face of Texas for a century until the Republicans came back stronger than ever. First and foremost, Texas was not colonized by British settlers. This has always made it stand out as a fiercely independent territory then later a state. The individuals who shaped and formed Texas did so in such a way to hold tightly onto its fierce independence. This fierce independence was fueled throughout the first several decades of Texas existence due to invading foreign armies and the daily struggles of just surviving in the Wild West. Because of this, the people of Texas developed strong work ethics and a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

And finally, in 1977 Bradbury was placed into the Art Director s Hall of Fame (Pioneer). It really goes to show that graphic design can lead one to several different types of work. After reading up on Bradbury Thompson I can only be overtaken by motivation and excitement in hoping that my career can lead me to as many exciting projects and places as Bradbury Thompson s did. As for Bradbury s work, he truly makes several masterpieces and deserves all the respect, awards, and recognition. He does very well at expressing meaningful concepts. The Importance Of The First Language Acquisition During the first two or three years of development, a child requires interaction with other language users in order to bring the general language capacity into contact with a particular language such as English. (Yule, The Study of Language, 2010) It is very important for a child to hear a certain language and to interact with others who are using this certain language in order to produce the language because a child is acquiring the language from his environment as it is not genetically inherited. Hearing language sounds is not enough to acquire a language, but interacting with others who are using this language is a crucial requirement for the first language acquisition. So, in order to speak a language, a child must be able to hear that language being used. (Yule, The Study of Language, 2010) A child who is doing so must be physically capable of hearing a language hearing sense and producing sounds. Deaf infants stop making cooing and babbling noises after six months unlike the normal hearing infants who are making these noises during their first year. Under normal circumstances, human infants are certainly helped in their language acquisition by the typical behavior of older children and adults in the home environment who provide language samples, or input, for the child. Created by Franklin Roosevelt in 1939, the Manhattan Project had used 2 billion dollars of taxpayer money to build the atomic bomb, equating to the most costly government project at the time. Political consequences of such wasted expenditures if the atomic bomb was never detonated justified dropping the bomb. When scientists finally witnessed its power in the demonstration at Alamogordo, New Mexico, newfound repercussions of this weapon of mass destruction propelled the subject to heated debate. Still, the majority opinion of government officials was to drop the bomb because it would reduce lives lost. Or at least that is what they told the American people. The alternative plan was invasions on Kyushu and Honshu, two strategic warfare locations of Japan which were to take place the coming fall and spring. There was no doubt that many lives would be lost through these invasions. Hisaichi Terauchi, Field Marshal of Japan, had already announced the execution of 100,000 Allied prisoners to deter any invasions from taking place. Extreme Japanese war customs also heightened Americans unwillingness to invade. Gyokusai, the Japanese term for suicide, was considered more honorable than surrendering. Literary Devices Used in the Things They Carried Essay Literary Devices Used In The Things They Carried By: Tom Vennemann The Things They Carried by Tim O Brien expresses the importance of a story truth, as opposed to a happening truth by use of literary elements in his writing. The novel is about war and the guilt it leaves on everyone involved in the war. Story truth is not exactly what happened, but uses part of the truth and part made up in order to express the truth of what emotion was felt, which an important thematic element in the novel is. The three literary devices he uses to express this are diction, imagery, juxtaposition, and hyperbole. All of these elements allow the reader to identify emotion that is expressed in each story, as though that were the complete truth. O Brien s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Usage of imagery in The Things They Carried is what introduces a reader to the emotion that was felt by O Brien. In this novel, imagery goes hand in hand with repetition. In The Man I Killed, O Brien is constantly repeating the image of the boy that he killed in his mind, which allows the reader to get a clear view of the boy. This is only a story truth, it is true to the reader because that is simply what we are told to picture. Imagery is important because it describes the setting and place, and what importance that played in the big picture of O Brien s war. Even though it is not the exact truth, it expressed truth in the form of emotion. The emotion that his images create in us is similar to the emotion that O Brien felt at the time of the event. The exaggeration that O Brien expresses in his story, also known as hyperbole, gives the reader a feeling of speaking with a man that just experienced the war of his life an hour before you two are speaking. The emotion is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 46. Germination of Cress Seeds Background point 1: There are several conditions that affect the germination of seeds. Most factors are external but there are also some internal conditions that affect the germination of seeds, even though this is quite rare. The most common and the most important external conditions and factors that affect the germination of seeds are oxygen, water, temperature and also in some cases light or darkness. Some plants require several variables for successful seed germination. As this is quite rare, this often depends on the individual seed and its natural habit. Let s focus on the most important factors that affect germination of seeds. Firstly we have oxygen which is required by the seed that is germinating for metabolism. The ... Dicot seed contains of two parts which have been named cotyledons. Their job is to supply the food for the growing of the young plant. An excellent example of a dicot seed is the bean seed. Dicot seeds consist of an outside cover, called seed coat, and also an embryo inside the bean. The Greek word for two is dis , and that is where we get di from. Seed which consists of only a single cotyledon are known as monocots. A corn seed is a very good example of a monocot. The seed of a monocot stays in one piece and does not split up. As the bean seed, the corn seed also has a seed coat, but this coat doesn t get off as easily. There is as well a part of the seed called the endosperm and this is the part where the monocot plants store their food. The Greek word for one is monos , and that s where we get mono from. Of course seeds consist of several components, but the three main and most significant parts are the seed coat, the endosperm and the embryo. The outer membrane of the seed is known as the seed coat and that is the part of the seed that is visible. The coat of the seed is often hard and very difficult to break. The outer membrane s function is to protect the sensitive parts that are inside the seed from diseases and common damages. Even though all seeds have a seed coat, there is ... • 48. Immanuel Kant And The Categorical Imperative Immanuel Kant, a German philosopher, specifically a deontologist, has two imperatives: the hypothetical imperative and the categorical imperative. These imperatives describe what we ought to do and are only applicable to rational beings because they are the only beings that recognize what they ought or ought not to do. The hypothetical imperative is when an individual s actions are reasoned by their desire, so they only act with the intention of fulfilling their desires. The categorical imperative is what human beings ought to do for their own sake regardless of whatever else they might desire. The categorical imperative has two formulations. Kant s first formulation of the categorical imperative states that one ought to only act on maxims that can be used as universal law. This formulation is based on its urgency and unity in the society. When a maxim cannot be determined a universal law, then it is morally impermissible to act upon it. Apply this formulation to the example of the lying promise: this cannot be willed as a universal law because trust will no longer be a part of society. If everyone were to make a lying promise to get money without retribution, then people will eventually recognize they are being deceived, which will result in a more selfish community. When one wills something as a universal law, then it is for the intention to better the state and community. This proves that the lying promise is not a maxim to live by. Kant s second formulation of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
