What does it mean when your apps can see, hear and feel? Digital sensors are flooding through our daily life. Mobile devices have microphones, cameras, accelerometers, digital compasses and now Near Field Communication (NFC) chips and scanners. But this is all just the very start. These small digital sensors are shrinking even further and just as Mark Weiser predicted they are soaking into the world around you. In this session Rob will explore how you can use these new streams of sensor data to create innovative and dynamic new user experiences. He’ll examine, from an experience point of view, what the challenges and constraints of sensor driven apps are and how you can deal with this deeply technical domain that covers issues such as sensor fusion, latency, calibration and newly extended mental models. But if that all sounds a bit dry and technical for you, don’t panic! Rob’s focus here is on how to create experiences using these technologies rather than the deep technical aspects themselves. However, he will help you get a clear overview of the work from the W3C Device API and Web Real Time Communication working groups, the ARStandards.org community and other related research activities. He’ll present tangible demonstrations that show how these new streams of “digital awareness” data can now be integrated into the experiences you create to literally bring your apps to life. This will leave you re-thinking your current projects and asking “Is that sense-able?”. Rob will also explore where we are headed with all of this and how to plan for this mind expanding journey. This is far from just a technical discussion. It will provide an introduction to the ethical and moral issues created by these sensors. Issues that we will all need to address in our own lives providing yet another aspect to the key question “Is that sensible?”

New sensor based Web Standards developments have punched a hole in the web that is letting the real world leak into the browser. The getUserMedia API now lets us access cameras and microphones and JSARToolkit and javascript based Natural Feature Tracking like the examples from ICG Graz University have shown that browsers can now be taught to perceive the world around them. Combine this with the <canvas> and WebGL and you have a real working model for a Web Standards based Augmented Reality. On top of this we also have OGCs Sensor Web Enablement and new developments like the Sensor API and the rapid spread of networked sensors and wireless Arduino-ised devices. Massively distributed dynamic immersive visualisation is now the new structural form for the modern web.

This can involve tasks such as object recognition, scene reconstruction, facial recognition, and image segmentation. Computer vision has a wide range of applications in various fields, such as healthcare, entertainment, transportation, robotics, and security. Some examples include medical image analysis, autonomous vehicles, augmented reality, and surveillance systems. In recent years, the development of deep learning techniques, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs), has greatly advanced the field of computer vision, allowing machines to achieve state-of-the-art performance on various visual recognition tasks.

Keywords: Signal processing, Applied optics, Computer graphics and vision, Electronics, Art, and Online photo collections A computational camera attempts to digitally capture the essence of visual information by exploiting the synergistic combination of task-specific optics, illumination, sensors and processing. We will discuss and play with thermal cameras, multi-spectral cameras, high-speed, and 3D range-sensing cameras and camera arrays. We will learn about opportunities in scientific and medical imaging, mobile-phone based photography, camera for HCI and sensors mimicking animal eyes. We will learn about the complete camera pipeline. In several hands-on projects we will build several physical imaging prototypes and understand how each stage of the imaging process can be manipulated. We will learn about modern methods for capturing and sharing visual information. If novel cameras can be designed to sample light in radically new ways, then rich and useful forms of visual information may be recorded -- beyond those present in traditional protographs. Furthermore, if computational process can be made aware of these novel imaging models, them the scene can be analyzed in higher dimensions and novel aesthetic renderings of the visual information can be synthesized. In this couse we will study this emerging multi-disciplinary field -- one which is at the intersection of signal processing, applied optics, computer graphics and vision, electronics, art, and online sharing through social networks. We will examine whether such innovative camera-like sensors can overcome the tough problems in scene understanding and generate insightful awareness. In addition, we will develop new algorithms to exploit unusual optics, programmable wavelength control, and femto-second accurate photon counting to decompose the sensed values into perceptually critical elements.

Computer Vision - now working  in over 2 Billion Web Browsers!

This was presented at Augmented World Expo in Santa Clara (#AWE2017). A video of the live Natural Feature Tracking demo will be uploaded and linked from here soon. The key benefit of using AR in your web browser is how quick and easy it is to share. You can send a single web link through social media or email and the recipient can just tap on the link and it works. But up until recently this has not included Computer Vision based AR for a number of technical and market reasons. This presentation will position the web browser in the overall context of Computer Vision history, and we'll look at how this has evolved through developments including jsartoolkit.js, tracking.js and AR.js. We'll then dive deeper into the latest developments to show how OpenCV performs running in the browser and how this compares to native applications. This deep dive will compare the different feature detection/extraction algorithms and how they perform on some well known image data sets. The session will conclude with demos that show how this all works right now in over 2 Billion capable web browsers.
