A new track & trace tool
for advanced brand protection
What is IQ-R and how does it work?
IQ-R is and identification & authentication feature which is hidden in 2D
printed codes (QR-code or Data Matrix). It works offline and provides
physical security for the products.
Jura is an expert for security design software and CTP plate setters, and
has specific know-how in scanning and printing processes. The IQ-R
authentication is based on the fact, that a photo when scanned and
reproduced will show certain details different to the original.
The same very small details can be detected with a suitable application. In 2012 Jura has
patented this know-how and created the IQ-R smartphone app. This app works offline,
and can authenticate images without comparison of previously taken data.
The authentication result subsequently can be sent to a database, if needed, when an
internet connection is available. This gives the IQ-R solution a strong advantage, be-
cause at certain times and in remote locations the internet is not always available.
It is important that when applying the IQ-R the original content of the 2D codes can still
be detected and decoded with normal readers without alteration.

Applications for IQ-R authentication
and track & trace solution
IQ-R is a 2nd
level security feature for authentication of printed items, packaging and docu-
ments. IQ-R is also a part of a track & trace solution. The result of the authentication is sent to a
central database for individual or statistical further processing.
• Grey market and re-import issues – Products des-
ignated for certain markets today often are redi-
rected to other markets. This procedure violates
marketing agreements and can be of substantial
damage to the international marketing strategy of
a company. IQ-R does not only authenticate a serial
number, 2D code and the connected product, but
also would send a message about the geolocation
data of the authentication to the central database.
• Counterfeit and brand protection – Most branded
products are counterfeited and can often not be
distinguished easily from originals.
• Tax stamps – The taxation of tobacco, alcohol and
many other items of national importance can be
controlled with IQ-R. Also the control work of the
responsible officers would be traceably document-
ed in database statistics.
• Birth, wedding and death certificates – These doc-
uments today are hardly secured with tamper evi-
dent features, even though the issue of passports
and ID cards usually is based on such documents.

Which information can the IQ-R
app provide
The IQ-R app in combination with a smartphone will provide an authentication note. The note
may indicate a green result, equal with the positive authentication. A yellow note indicates
a failed authentication. This may happen due to a sudden move of the phone, a dirty lens or
similar. In this case the authentication has to be repeated. A red result indicates a copy, coun-
terfeit and it’s equal with the absence of the IQ-R security feature.
Aside of this authentication result, also the phone user, date and time, as well as the geoloca-
tion data will be logged in the database.
Optionally further information will be downloaded from the smartphone, depending on the
legal limitations of the relevant country. The smartphone user may also be asked for his con-
sent. That can be the start of a customer relationship management program.
All the above listed information will be initially stored in the smartphone temporarily, for a
maximum of 250 authentication scans, if no internet connection is available. Later, the data will
be sent to the database and collected for further individual or statistic processing.
The geolocation data can be displayed also on Google Maps. In this process the location of all
scans would be displayed in a certain territory or on all continents. This special IQ-R task is use-
ful in case of grey market or reimport problems.
Suitable printing
equipment examples
For IQ-R, printed in a 2D code, we have tested several digital
printing devices, all of them with a minimum of 600 dpi resolu-
tion. At increased speed usually the printer looses resolution,
however there are some devices on the market which can
keep 600 dpi up to 300 m/min operating speed, for example:
• Kodak – systems using Kodak Prosper printheads (600 dpi,
up to 300 m/min speed).
• HP – Indigo sheet or reel printers (812 dpi, up to 3000
sheets/hour).
• Specific – high quality printheads from different suppliers
(HP, Kyocera or Lexmark) built into OEM printing systems
(at least 600 dpi, up to 150 m/min).

FOR IQ-R
2D Code
The IQ-R system contains a 2D printed code (such
as a QR-code or Data Matrix), which carries original
production and vendor information and the per-
sonalized product identifier.
IQ-R Generation
The code is protected by Jura’s own patent pend-
ing technology, which makes photocopying ex-
tremely difficult, and distinguishing a reprinted
counterfeit from the original easy.
Printing
The protected code is printed by good-quality
industrial ink-jet heads. This protection is hidden,
unperceivable by naked eye.

Checking
IQ-R uses a smartphone application to track and
authenticate products in one step, using the
phone’s camera. It is able to operate/authenticate
offline with all data gathered which will be up-
loaded to a central database as soon as a data con-
nection is available. With online data connection
additional information can be displayed as well.
The data can be analysed and even displayed on a
map for locating counterfeiting hotspots.

AUTHENTICATION
What is authentication, in the context of
a 2D code, which is used for identification?
A serial number printed in a 2D code can be used for identification of a product. This serial
number can be stored in a database. With a suitable code reader and an internet connec-
tion with the database the existence of the serial number can be verified. However this serial
number can be printed on many counterfeits, because the code reader apps and the code
generator apps for most 2D code systems – like Data Matrix or QR – are publicly available on
the internet.
To the contrary the authentication must prove that the very image or code is an original, and
is therefore not a copy or a reproduction of the original code. The authentication of a code
together with a tamper evident packaging can authenticate the content of the packaging.
11. 9
2 types of authentication
• A – The authentication can be made in a 2D code, like Data Matrix or QR-code.
These codes are serial, and therefore every code receives a second layer with a
specific IQ-R feature. For this type of authentication we recommend a printing
resolution of 600 dpi, printed with a digital printer.
• B – With IQ-R also other kind of images can be authenticated. A guilloche or
a group of security lines may be used as authentication images together with
the 2D codes. This part of the feature would be static. Every original would
look alike the other. This IQ-R type can be printed in Offset or even Flexo. In or-
der to prevent counterfeits and reproduction we recommend 5000 dpi reso-
lution. If that is not available, we can either provide a traditional film, a printing
plate or even a new CTP. Type B enhances the security of the whole solution.
It must be used with type A together. Using type A and B needs two-phase
printing. First run with Flexo or Offset, second run with digital printhead.
12. 10
Smartphones & devices
The IQ-R system is based on coordinated components like the substrate, the ink,
the printer, the mobile app and the smarthpone.
Currently Jura offers the IQ-R authentication app based on Android software.
Therefore we use smartphones like Samsung S4, S5 and S6, LG G3 and G4, the
Sony Xperia, and others with a minimum of 8-megapixel camera resolution. If
required we can also program a new app for other platform like Apple iOS.
The latest smartphone cameras are quite high-quality optical devices. They give
stable pictures therefore the IQ-R app is developed for easy checking handheld use. Neverthe-
less, for faster authentication we can provide a simple plastic holder combined with a tube
– manufactured on a 3D printer – which ensures the optimal position of the smartphone and
the image. For authorities a desktop reader device is also available for express authentication.
Production & quality control
The IQ-R is widely applicable in tamper evident packaging. Examples:
• packaging and personalized IQ-R are printed together (one-run)
• packaging is printed first, then personalized IQ–R printed on it
• pre-created packaging + unremovable sticker with IQ–R
Based on request Jura can deliver a high-quality QC system that keeps the manufacturing
quality at the highest, and the productivity and cost at appropriate level.
13. 11
IQ-R is applicable on a wide range of products, optimally short
life prints with personalization. It enhances the security of
cheques, vouchers, tickets, labels etc., and also improves protec-
tion of special packaging, labels for authenticity products.
The protection is unperceivable by naked eye. The original 2D
code remains the same including customer’s own product
and vendor information. The encoded information physically
enhances the security of each print.
No extra operations and costs in production. Neither
additional investments nor specific materials are required.
No special technology needed. Integration is easy into any
suitable existing printing workflow.
No special device needed, IQ-R is checked with smartphones
and doesn’t require any special knowledge.
Verification doesn’t require a special location, it can be done
offline, anywhere.
One is for resellers/authorities (with more details), and one
is for end-users (for simple checking).
The collected data can be optionally uploaded to a central
database for further steps. The data can be used for creating
location maps of areas of frequent counterfeiting.
The IQ-R app works on high-quality and some good middle-range
Android powered mobile phones with good optical capabilities,
and in case of request it can be developed also for iOS platform.
The IQ-R system includes multi-level protection with authoriza-
tion and data encryption.
