Taming iOS Testing at Square -- JUC West 2015
iOS applications have unique constraints that make continuous integration and release automation difficult. We’ll be going through techniques used at Square to scale and measure the effectiveness of our iOS test cluster which is used by dozens of engineers to build a handful of applications. Testing is incredibly important to Square because our mobile applications process payments. We’ve built speedy and scalable OSX infrastructure for builds; written a configuration language for describing iOS builds that separates release code from application code; tamed the iOS simulator; and reduced the overall flakiness of our iOS tests to the 0.5% level.

The main theme of the talk will be Open Source: what is great about it, what is bad and how you must become a part of the Open Source community to really move quickly and benefit from it. For this project, I did both the code and the design, so you'll have a chance to see how solo-developer deals with time/feature constraints, which tools I've used and what my approach towards development in this mode is. Development environments are a necessary part of every developer's workflow. They can also be a great source of friction. What may begin as simply running python my_app.py eventually bloats as you add more apps, more databases, more testing frameworks, and more developers. We'll talk about the evolution of a typical development environment, how it lets us down, and how we try to make it better. We'll end with an introduction to Dusty, a new tool which uses Docker containers to take our development environments to the next level.
