they are a sure money spinner. The agricultural sector of which pig farming is a
part of is no doubt among the leading industry in most countries of the world, it is
the industry that produces food for the ever-growing populace and raw materials
for industries
There are several business opportunities available in the agricultural industry
cum livestock industry and one good thing about the industry is that there is
market for all the produce from the industry. Pig farming is of course a thriving
and profitable business because of the nutritious value of pig meat (pork) and
other by products from pigs.
The Livestock Farming industry of which pig farming line of business is a part of
is indeed a large industry and is active in countries such as United States of
America, Israel, Brazil, China, Germany, Argentina and Nigeria et al. It is a fact that
there is no single livestock farming company cum pig farming business that has
dominate market share in the industry hence smaller pig farming business can
successfully compete in the industry and still make appreciable profits.
The EU accounts for approximately 20% of the world`s pork production and the
major producer is Germany (20%), Spain (17%), France (13%), Denmark (11%)
and Netherlands (11%). Together these countries produce more than 70% of the
EU indigenous production.

4. Assumptions and estimated profitability of pig farm
Assuming these stocks are bought when they are 6 months old, we will need to
raise them till they are 12 months/1yr before mating and in 2-3 years all expenses
will be recovered. Their gestation period is 3months ,3weeks and 3days and can
be sold at any desired age according to our discretion or as required by clients.
Going by this let’s look at the possible arithmetic
Assuming we have 25 sows and only 22 conceive:
If they are 6 litters each (6*22 = 132 litters)
Let’s assume we have 66 males & 66 females. Now we would have 91 females. We
may decide to sell all or retain them. Also note that in the next six months the old
25 females will conceive again while at their delivery the new set of 91 females
would all pregnant. These old females will again give 132 litters. Total litters in
just one-year would amount to (264 piglets). At this stage (one year) the old set
of 66 males are mature for sale at same rate of 45k. (45k*66=2970000). in just
one year.
Also bear in mind that the first 66 piglets will deliver at the rate of probably 6
litters each (6*66=396). So, at the end of the second year the farm would have
raised and we would sell almost 500-750 pigs. At the end of the third year well
over 1000-1200 pigs would have been sold.
Daily Expenses for 1 Year
MALES FOR SALE: 66 * 45000 = 2,970,000
IF THE COST OF FEEDING FOR 6 MONTHS IS 500K THAT MEANS 1MILLION
WILL BE SPENT IN ONE YEAR. (1000,000).
SALARY FOR 3 PEOPLE * 30,000*12MONTHS= 1,080,000
FUEL 300,000.
EXPENSES: 100000+1080000+300= 2,380,000
PROFIT: 2970000-2380000= 590,000.
PROFIT FOR ONE YEAR ON JUST 66 PIGS SOLD = 590,000
