Intrusion
An intrusion is defined as the unauthorized use ,
misuse or abuse of a computer system(s) by
either authorized user or external perpetrators.
Intruder
An Intruder is a person who attempts to gain
unauthorized access to a system, to damage that
system, or to disturb data on that system.
This person attempts to violate Security by
interfering with system Availability, data Integrity
or data Confidentiality.
Intrusion Detection System (IDS)
An IDS is either a hardware device or software
application that uses known intrusion signatures to
detect and analyse both inbound and outbound
network traffic for abnormal activities
Types of IDS
 Network Intrusion Detection System
 Host Intrusion Detection System
 Signature-based intrusion detection systems
 Anomaly-based intrusion detection systems
Network Intrusion Detection System
A network-based intrusion detection system(NIDS) is an independent
platform which identifies intrusions by examining network traffic and
monitors multiple hosts.
 A NIDS reads all inbound packets and searches for any suspicious
patterns.
 When threats are discovered, based on its severity, the system can
take action such as notifying administrators, or barring the source IP
address from accessing the network.
Host Intrusion Detection System
 Host Intrusion detection systems(HIDS ) are installed on the individual
devices in the network.
 HIDS analyzes the incoming and outgoing packets frmo a particular
device.
 HIDS is better than Network IDS as a comparison to detecting malicious
activities for a particular device.
Advantages of IDS
 Moniters an entire network with only a few well-placed nodes.
 Mostly passive devices.
 Easy to secure against attack.
 NIDS can be used in the present networks without interupting
conventional network operations.
Disadvantages of IDS
 May not be able to monitor and analyze all traffic on large, busy
networks.
 Vulnerable to attacks launched during peak traffic periods on large busy
networks.
 Does not always report success or failure of attempted attacks.
Conclusion
As NIDS technologies continue to evolve, they will more closely
resemble their real-world counterparts. In the future, NIDS ,firewalls,
VPNs, and related security technologies wil all come to interoperate to a
much higher degree. The current generation of Ids (HIDS and NIDS) is
quiet effectively already; as they continue to improve they will become
the backbone of the more flexible security systems we expect to see in
the not-too-distant future.

  • 3. Intrusion An intrusion is defined as the unauthorized use , misuse or abuse of a computer system(s) by either authorized user or external perpetrators.
  • 4. Intruder An Intruder is a person who attempts to gain unauthorized access to a system, to damage that system, or to disturb data on that system. This person attempts to violate Security by interfering with system Availability, data Integrity or data Confidentiality.
  • 5. Intrusion Detection System (IDS) An IDS is either a hardware device or software application that uses known intrusion signatures to detect and analyse both inbound and outbound network traffic for abnormal activities
  • 6. Types of IDS  Network Intrusion Detection System  Host Intrusion Detection System  Signature-based intrusion detection systems  Anomaly-based intrusion detection systems
  • 7. Network Intrusion Detection System A network-based intrusion detection system(NIDS) is an independent platform which identifies intrusions by examining network traffic and monitors multiple hosts.  A NIDS reads all inbound packets and searches for any suspicious patterns.  When threats are discovered, based on its severity, the system can take action such as notifying administrators, or barring the source IP address from accessing the network.

Host Intrusion Detection System  Host Intrusion detection systems(HIDS ) are installed on the individual devices in the network.  HIDS analyzes the incoming and outgoing packets frmo a particular device.  HIDS is better than Network IDS as a comparison to detecting malicious activities for a particular device.

  • 11. Advantages of IDS  Moniters an entire network with only a few well-placed nodes.  Mostly passive devices.  Easy to secure against attack.  NIDS can be used in the present networks without interupting conventional network operations.
  • 12. Disadvantages of IDS  May not be able to monitor and analyze all traffic on large, busy networks.  Vulnerable to attacks launched during peak traffic periods on large busy networks.  Does not always report success or failure of attempted attacks.
  • 13. Conclusion As NIDS technologies continue to evolve, they will more closely resemble their real-world counterparts. In the future, NIDS ,firewalls, VPNs, and related security technologies wil all come to interoperate to a much higher degree. The current generation of Ids (HIDS and NIDS) is quiet effectively already; as they continue to improve they will become the backbone of the more flexible security systems we expect to see in the not-too-distant future.
