This document discusses human-centered design and how new products are developed. It explains that in the past, products were developed based on what was technically feasible or could be sold, without considering what people actually wanted. However, human-centered design focuses on desirability by understanding people's needs and desires first before considering feasibility and viability. The document provides examples of products that failed because they did not take a human-centered approach, and emphasizes the importance of starting any new product development by understanding what people want.

Making the Case for Impact Sourcing - SamasourceLeila Janah
Impact Sourcing is a new type of business process outsourcing (BPO) that aims to create jobs for individuals with limited opportunity in rural or economically depressed communities. There are a number of new studies which show the significant business benefits for companies that partner with Impact Sourcing providers, including significant cost savings and proven social benefits. Additionally, Impact Sourcing can provide high-quality, reliable services at prices that are at least competitive with traditional BPO centers and, in some cases, almost 40 percent lower than what traditional providers can offer. It is estimated that 40% of companies currently outsourcing to traditional BPOs will allocate at least 25% of their budget toward Impact Sourcing providers by 2015. As a pioneer in Impact Sourcing, Samasource has connected over 3,700 poor women and youth across 9 countries to nearly $3 million in living wages. This work is sourced from some of the world's biggest enterprises including Google, Microsoft, Intuit, and LinkedIn. In this presentation, we explain what Impact Sourcing is, the benefits to clients and beneficiaries, and the forecasted growth of the industry.

While Open Source software has already developed viable business models and markets, other Open projects are still trying to define their best practices. Open Hardware, Open Design, Fab Labs, Hackerspaces and DIY Craft projects already show some emergent models and markets that can be explored and developed further.
It is strategic for Open or DIY designers to consider the specific business models and markets available for their projects, in order to run them in a sustainable way, both right now and in the possible future scenarios we can help evolve through collective collaboration.

Prepared and facilitated a one-day workshop to introduce new learners to Human-Centered Design. Using IDEO’s Design Kit, the workshop provided a hands-on opportunity for us to guide a group of multidisciplinary participants through a creative approach to problem-solving.
Having run numerous workshops using Human-Centered Design principles, we understand the value that it brings to companies seeking to develop innovative solutions. This facilitator’s workshop allowed us to sharpen our abilities and share the fundamentals of Human-Centered Design to a new audience.
A storyFirst Approach to Human-Centered Design | Installment #2 @ the 2014 UX...Lou Susi
When we design for experience, subtle and peculiar shifts come into play that demand a uniquely empathic way of thinking about our practice.
We’re no longer designing for an ‘audience’ or ‘viewers’ through our previously static / mass mediated, one-way delivery of the information and designs we’re communicating. Instead, when we consider aspects of interactive engagement for our ‘users’ to experience — we need to thoughtfully dream up the actual stories we’re asking the people in our audience to actively live out. In this talk we discuss the benefits of putting story at the center of a human-centered design approach to improve the design process as well as the quality of the total human experience we’re ultimately all creating through our work.
I delivered this installment of the storyFirst talk at the very first UXBoston Conference on Saturday, July 19th 2014 at the Microsoft NERD Center in Kendall Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts { further details about the conference can be found at: http://www.meetup.com/uxboston/events/136304392/ }.
Stay tuned for further public speaking installments of the storyFirst Approach by visiting: http://storyfirst.org and http://myownmindllc.com and http://loususi.com.
Any UXBoston Conference attendees that would like to provide comments or feedback on the talk can graciously visit my SpeakerRate page for the presentation at: http://spkr8.com/t/34281 — I truly appreciate any continued conversation, critical feedback and other discussion as it will help me continue to develop the concepts we discussed at the conference for further clarity and development as a more and more valuable approach to experience design for both personal human-centered design and professional team-based experience design collaborations.
The visual analysis of 10 popular/ successful Design Toolkits. 4 Graduate Service Design Students from SCAD (Lauren Peters, Lindsay Vetel, Louis Finklestein, and Richard Ekelman) explore the contextual value of these Design Toolkits and Whom they are created for.

Contextualizing, analyzing, and quantifying each
toolkit, gave us a new and deeper understanding of
each.
Which also posed the question, are designers too
intimidated to write for other designers?
Or were these toolkits written in order to expand the
notion of design thinking to users who wouldn’t
normally employ these philosophies and to bring a
deeper understanding to outliers?

Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.
