This document provides an introduction to Amazon Web Services (AWS), including:
- AWS is a cloud provider that offers on-demand servers and services that can easily scale. It powers websites like Amazon and Netflix.
- AWS has a global infrastructure spanning 69 availability zones across 22 regions worldwide, with plans to expand to 3 more regions.
- AWS regions contain multiple, isolated availability zones to protect against disasters. Services are scoped to regions except for a few like S3.
- AWS offers a variety of computing, networking, database, storage and security services according to different responsibility models.

Designing security & governance via AWS Control Tower & Organizations - SEC30...Amazon Web Services
Whether it is per business unit or per application, many AWS customers use multiple accounts to meet their infrastructure isolation, separation of duties, and billing requirements. In this session, we cover considerations, limitations, and security patterns when building a multi-account strategy. We explore topics such as thought pattern, identity federation, cross-account roles, consolidated logging, and account governance. We conclude by presenting an enterprise-ready landing-zone framework and providing the background needed to implement an AWS Landing Zone using AWS Control Tower and AWS Organizations.
by Kashif Imran, Sr. Solutions Architect, AWS
Serverless computing allows you to build and run applications without the need for provisioning or managing servers. With serverless computing, you can build web, mobile, and IoT backends; run stream processing or big data workloads; run chatbots, and more. In this session, you’ll learn how to get started with serverless computing with AWS Lambda, which lets you run code without provisioning or managing servers. We’ll introduce you to the basics of building with Lambda and how you can benefit from features such as continuous scaling, built-in high availability, integrations with AWS and third-party apps, and subsecond metering pricing. We’ll also introduce you to the broader portfolio of AWS services that help you build serverless applications with Lambda, including Amazon API Gateway, Amazon DynamoDB, AWS Step Functions, and more.

Do you want to run your code without the cost and effort of provisioning and managing servers? Find out how in this deep dive session on AWS Lambda, which allows you to run code for virtually any type of application or back end service – all with zero administration. During the session, we’ll look at a number of key AWS Lambda features and benefits, including automated application scaling with high availability; pay-as-you-consume billing; and the ability to automatically trigger your code from other AWS services or from any web or mobile app.
AWS is architected to be one of the most flexible and secure cloud computing environments available today. It provides an extremely scalable, highly reliable platform that enables customers to deploy applications and data quickly and securely. When using AWS, not only are infrastructure headaches removed, but so are many of the security issues that come with them.
In this webinar, you'll learn about the foundational security blocks and how to start using them effectively to create robust and secure architectures. Discover how Identity and Access management is done and how it integrates with other AWS services. In addition, learn how to improve governance by using AWS Security Hub, AWS Config and CloudTrail to gain unprecedented visibility of activity in the account. Subsequently use AWS Config rules to rectify configuration issues quickly and effectively.
Introduction to AWS and Terraform. In these slides we introduce AWS, cloud networking and cloud native workflows using infrastructure as code via Terraform.
Learning Objectives:
- Learn how to make decisions about the service and share best practices and useful tips for success
- Learn about Content based routing, HTTP/2, WebSockets
- Secure your web applications using TLS termination, AWS WAF on Application Load Balancer
Elastic Load Balancing allows the incoming traffic to be distributed automatically across multiple healthy EC2 instances.
ELB serves as a single point of contact to the client.
ELB helps to being transparent and increases the application availability by allowing addition or removal of multiple EC2 instances across one or more availability zones, without disrupting the overall flow of information.
This session is designed to introduce you to fundamental cloud computing and AWS security concepts that will help you prepare for the Security Week sessions, demos, and workshops. We will also provide an overview of the Security pillar of the AWS Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF) and talk about how AWS keeps humans away from data—and how you can, too.

As serverless architectures become more popular, customers need a framework of patterns to help them identify how they can leverage AWS to deploy their workloads without managing servers or operating systems. This session describes re-usable serverless patterns while considering costs. For each pattern, we provide operational and security best practices and discuss potential pitfalls and nuances. We also discuss the considerations for moving an existing server-based workload to a serverless architecture. The patterns use services like AWS Lambda, Amazon API Gateway, Amazon Kinesis Streams, Amazon Kinesis Analytics, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon S3, AWS Step Functions, AWS Config, AWS X-Ray, and Amazon Athena. This session can help you recognize candidates for serverless architectures in your own organizations and understand areas of potential savings and increased agility. What’s new in 2017: using X-Ray in Lambda for tracing and operational insight; a pattern on high performance computing (HPC) using Lambda at scale; how a query can be achieved using Athena; Step Functions as a way to handle orchestration for both the Automation and Batch patterns; a pattern for Security Automation using AWS Config rules to detect and automatically remediate violations of security standards; how to validate API parameters in API Gateway to protect your API back-ends; and a solid focus on CI/CD development pipelines for serverless –that includes testing, deploying, and versioning (SAM tools).
In this session, we walk through the fundamentals of Amazon VPC. First, we cover build-out and design fundamentals for VPCs, including picking your IP space, subnetting, routing, security, NAT, and much more. We then transition to different approaches and use cases for optionally connecting your VPC to your physical data center with VPN or AWS Direct Connect. This mid-level architecture discussion is aimed at architects, network administrators, and technology decision makers interested in understanding the building blocks that AWS makes available with Amazon VPC. Learn how you can connect VPCs with your offices and current data center footprint.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

• Each availability zone is a physical data center in the region, but
separate from the other ones (so that they’re isolated from disasters)
• AWS Consoles are region scoped (except IAM, S3 & Route53)
