The bright-field microscope forms a dark image against a brighter background. It has a sturdy metal body with a base containing a light source and an arm containing focusing knobs. The stage holds microscope slides and can be moved manually. The substage condenser focuses light on the slide and the nosepiece holds interchangeable objectives of different magnifications below the body. Light travels through the objective, specimen, and eyepiece to produce a magnified image. Resolution depends on the wavelength of light and numerical aperture of the objective lens, with smaller distances between objects allowing better resolution.
