This document provides an overview of the structure and activities for an online introductory French course. It discusses the various components on the Blackboard site including announcements, assignments, exams and discussion boards. It also describes the textbook, workbook, journal and speaking activities that will take place on the iLrn site and Skype/Adobe Connect. Students are instructed to check Blackboard regularly for updates and submit assignments by specified deadlines.

3. How does this course work? Blackboard Blackboard is your starting point. Blackboard has the course announcements, course documents, assignments, and is where you submit certain written assignments and quizzes. Check Blackboard first. Textbook and iLrn iLrn is where you find all of your textbook, workbook and journal activities and where you submit the textbook and workbook assignments. Skype/Adobe Connect Skype and Adobe Connect are the programs we will be using to conduct the weekly speaking activities.

4. Blackboard What will you find on Blackboard? Enseignante This is where you will find my contact information (e-mail address, office location and hours, etc.) In the “Documents” section: Course Documents: Syllabus Course Calendar (this is the outline of how we are going to progress through the semester. The individual weekly folders are hidden to keep you from being confused. The course calendar will help you know how we are going to progress and when the important dates for exams are.) iLrn registration information Accent typing instructions (French is one of those languages with special accent marks and you must be able to type these in your journals and on your exams. There are instructions for both PC and MAC.)

5. Blackboard “ Documents” cont. Vocab/Grammar documents Here you will find any vocabulary or grammar handouts and the presentation files and links. If you find any handouts or have any from a high school course you took, feel free to let me know and I may post them here for the rest of the class to use. The “Devoirs” section This is where you will find all of your homework assignments. Homework is due by 11:55pm on Mondays and Thursdays. So the current week’s folder will have a Lundi and a Jeudi folder (Monday and Thursday respectively) in which is listed every assignment which is due that day. This is also where you will find how you should proceed through the materials. For example: If it says Lisez pp. 220, you need to read pp. 220. Faites les activités A et B pp 220-1– you need to go to iLrn and do activities A & B which are on pages 220-1 in the textbook section (this may not be the actual assignment for those pages; this is just an example). Please follow the directions given on Blackboard. This is also where you will submit certain assignments and quizzes. The new week’s folder will appear on Friday morning at 12:00 am.

6. Blackboard cont. Exams This is where your chapter and final exams will appear during the days allotted for you to take the exam (again, see the course calendar for specific information). You are not allowed to consult books, websites, or notes during a test! Any such consultation will be considered an act of academic dishonesty and has sever consequences. Communication This is where you will find many things, including the e-mail addresses of your classmates.

7. Blackboard cont. Discussion Board Here you will find two discussion boards: the first is the self introduction activity; the second is the Question discussion board. The Question Discussion Board is where you can post two types of questions: course questions or vocab/grammar questions. Rather than responding to individual e-mails, it is easier if you post your questions here. This way anyone who has your question can find the answer and I don’t have to answer the same question 40 times.  If you don’t find your question among those already posted, please post your question. Questions of a personal nature should be e-mailed directly to me. Questions of a general or how to nature should be posted.

8. Blackboard cont. Liens This is where you will find helpful links of many different natures. There are links to the iLrn tech support people. There are links to important ASU sites. There are links to French radio and TV. stations as well as French/Francophone governmental sites. If you find links you think the class might be interested in, please send them to me. Outils Outils means tools; this is where you find your grades.

10. iLrn Registration instructions are available on Blackboard. This is where you will find the course code you need to be sure to register for my course on the iLrn site. Textbook Activities There are textbook activities that go along with all the sections of the book listed on the previous page. Specific instructions regarding how to proceed thought the textbook and its activities are on Blackboard. (Should the activities on Blackboard and iLrn not match, please let me know so that I can correct that). I have you do the reprise activities after you have done all the other activities because these are the chapter review activities. iLrn also has Video activities which are put w/ the textbook activities even though there is no video section in the book.

11. iLrn cont. Workbook activities There are workbook activities which accompany the 4 compétences from the Textbook. Only the Compétences have workbook activities; the culture sections and the lecture sections do not have workbook activities. Once you have finished the textbook activities for a given compétence you should then do the Workbook activities. Please be sure to do the activities in both sections of the workbook The Cahier d’activités écrites (written activities) The last activity for the written activity section for Compétences 2 & 4 have a journal activity. You will be submitting the journals via Blackboard and not via iLrn. The Cahier d’activités orales (listening activities)

12. Journals Journals are found at the end of the cahier d’activités écrites for compétences 2 & 4. The activity is always entitled Journal and is not assigned on the iLrn site. Journals are to be typed in a document and saved as either a .doc/.docx (a Word document) or a .rtf (rich text format). I don’t have works and cannot open works formatted files! If I can’t open it; I can’t grade it. Journals are to be at least 10 sentences long. When writing conversations “Bonjour!” or “Salut!” do NOT count as sentences. Also if you have the same sentence (J’adore le français – for example) ending all of your journals, it will be counted the first couple of times; after that it will not be counted towards your 10 sentence minimum.

13. Journals cont. Journals should be saved with the following name: LastnameJournalCh.Compétence. For example: If you are saving the journal from compétence 4 of Ch. 1 and your last name is Peyton, you save your document: PeytonJournalCh1C4.doc – no spaces please (please be sure to put your last name and not mine  .) You should also put your name and the assignment INSIDE your document—it’s only polite to put your name on your paper. So at the top of the page I should also find : Shannon Peyton Journal Ch. 1 Comp. 4

14. Speaking activities/Oral exams You will need to download and create an account with Skype – if you have not already done so. We will use Skype to have our weekly speaking appointments. You will have a specific time each week when you and I will meet online and do the speaking activities. Frequently we will also use the Adobe connect program—I will provide the link you will need for that. If you need to change your time, you need to e-mail me in advance of your appointment time so that I know you will be unable to meet with me. If you schedule is changing every week, please let me know that too, so that I can make note to get your new appointment time for the next week. I will have a schedule available for you sometime later this week. If none of the given times are convenient for you, send me an e-mail and we will work something out. Oral Exams will be held using Skype alone during your regular appointment time on the week when the oral exam is indicated.
