Arabian literature is rich and varied, consisting of poems, tales, historical accounts and philosophies. Much of the early written literature was based on oral traditions and focused on praising cultural values and the desert environment. The rise of Islam brought the written collection of the Quran and other early prose works focused on the religion. Over time, Arabic literature developed and flourished during the Umayyad and Abbasid periods, with new genres like love poetry and rhymed prose emerging. The modern period saw Arabic literature decline under Ottoman rule but experience a renaissance and incorporation of Western influences as new forms like the novel and short story arose in the 20th century.
