Blockchain in research and education - UKSG Webinar - September 2017Martin Hamilton
There’s a lot of hype right now about blockchain, the technology that underpins the Bitcoin virtual currency, with speculation that it could transform just about every aspect of our lives. In this talk for UKSG I consider possible blockchain applications in research and education, and do a little myth-busting about when and where it makes sense to use blockchain.

Generating a custom Ruby SDK for your web service or Rails API using Smithyg2nightmarescribd
Have you ever wanted a Ruby client API to communicate with your web service? Smithy is a protocol-agnostic language for defining services and SDKs. Smithy Ruby is an implementation of Smithy that generates a Ruby SDK using a Smithy model. In this talk, we will explore Smithy and Smithy Ruby to learn how to generate custom feature-rich SDKs that can communicate with any web service, such as a Rails JSON API.

Connector Corner: Automate dynamic content and events by pushing a buttonDianaGray10
Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

7. 10 years in development... 1998 2000 2002 2004 2006 2008 2010 2012 Early development of museum ‘brochureware’ websites Some innovative work presenting virtual experiences based on collections The heyday of digitisation begins
8. 10 years in development... 1998 2000 2002 2004 2006 2008 2010 2012 Increasingly sophisticated and complex interactive websites Collections data increasingly integrated into the user experience Starting to blur the boundaries via federated search, RSS feeds, mobile platforms
9. 10 years in development... 1998 2000 2002 2004 2006 2008 2010 2012 Less and less about ‘your’ website and increasingly about multi-platform, multi-channel content Reaching a larger and non-traditional audience by syndicating content to media partners Moving from content proliferation to content on-demand, and scalable economic models
10. Beyond your Website: Aggregation and Syndication The underlying principle of Content Management Publish once, re-use many times That re-use is no longer limited to your website Enables us to move from being single-channel to multi-channel BUT You no longer control the context in which users consume your information Puts us in the same competitive environment as publishers and broadcasters

19. Semantics and Linked Data The Internet is dumb about its own content But all the information it needs is there in the web pages and PDFs Linked data is the next evolution of metadata Metadata is data within your system which describes your information Linked data is data within many other systems which can describe your information

24. Challenges These developments are all about the trade off between relinquishing control now in the belief that it will drive greater usage of your content in the future. Website statistics are a blunt instrument, but at least they exist. The world of aggregation and syndication is very light on evidence. There is a belief among funders that the value of investment in ‘digital culture’ is locked away in storage (sound familiar?). Aggregation and syndication are regarded as the way to unlock this value. These developments always raise issues of organisational change, including lack of trust, loss of confidence, perceived loss of connection to the ‘real’ stuff. The pace at which we have moved from ‘stock control’ to ‘content’ is faster than our ability to keep up – with the result that much of our content isn’t ready to be aggregated
25. Opportunities Reach a lot more people Reduce the operational overhead on information creation and management Reduce the operational overhead on maintenance and infrastructure Open up new sources of funding and new partnerships The potential to explore a Web 2.0 style collaborative approach to meaning
