Unmarried girls would try to predict their future husbands by pouring melted wax into water to see shapes, or using cards. The standard tradition was using an old key to pour wax, where shapes like a mountain meant a violent husband while a dog or cat meant a kind husband. At the author's school, they have a special annual party on St. Andrew's Night where students dress up, dance, sing games, and do fortune telling for fun.
