CHAPTER-1
INDUSTRY PROFILE
Companies in and outside the information technology (IT) industry employ information
technology workers. While one might think of the typical IT worker as employed by a major
software company or systems developer, the reality is that nine out of ten IT workers are found in
banks, insurance companies, manufacturing plants or other non-IT businesses. A new survey by
the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) shows that not only are IT workers
found mostly outside the IT industry, but that the outlook and prospects for the two groups is likely
to be far different. In previous years, characterized by double digit growth and anxious investors
betting on the next new thing, careers inside the IT industry appeared to be the way to go—at least
for those on the professional fast track. Much has changed since 2001, even as the economy slowly
recovers and the overall size of the IT workforce approaches its historic high point of 10.4 million.
The employment footing outside the IT industry seems surer, less turbulent. Non-IT companies
are more likely to hire according to plan, far less likely to move jobs overseas, more apt to
increase—not cut—compensation.
Whether non-IT companies offer IT workers long-term career advantages or just a
temporary “port in the storm” remains to be seen. IT companies are hard pressed by customers to
field cost effective solutions. The pressure on IT companies to cut costs is clearly reflected in this
survey. This survey is a continuation of the ITAA series of reports on the IT workforce. Since
1997, ITAA has tracked employer demand for IT workers. In the run up to the year 2000, IT talent
was scarce and demand exceeded supply. Because of the talent crunch, ITAA focused on the skills
most demanded by employers and the education and training alternatives for gaining those skills.
With job market conditions changing, ITAA’s survey has evolved to explore how trends like
offshore development may be changing the employment landscape.

This survey reports findings in nine areas:
 Total IT workforce size
 Future demand for IT workers
 Demand in specific job categories
 Hiring and layoff activity
 Success at hiring to plan
 Skills attainment
 Recruitment
 Offshore development
 Compensation

COMPANY PROFILE
2.1.Background & Inception of ORACLE
It all began Three and a half decades ago when Larry Ellison, saw an opportunity other
companies missed: a description of a working prototype for a relational database. No company had
committed to commercializing the technology, but Ellison and co-founders Bob Miner and Ed
Oates realized the tremendous business potential of the relational database model. None of them
realized at the time that the company they formed would change the face of business computing
forever.
Throughout its history Oracle has proved it can build for the future on the foundation of its
innovations and its knowledge of customer challenges and successes analyzed by the best technical
and business minds in the world.
Today Oracle is the leader in database software and as it has further developed technologies
and acquired best-in-class companies over the years, that leadership has expanded to the entire
technology stack, from servers and storage, to database and middleware, through applications and
into the cloud.
What does Oracle have in store for tomorrow? We will continue to provide our customers
with hardware and software engineered to work together integrated from disk to applications that
meet their business needs and solve their business problems. And we will continue to innovate and
to lead the industry, while always making sure that we focus on solving the problems of the
customers who rely on our technology.

2.7. Competitors Information
IBM DB2 is the database management system that delivers a flexible and cost-effective
database platform to build robust on demand business applications. The IBM DB2 Universal
Database (UDB) Enterprise Server Edition (ESE) is one of the best RDBMS. IBM positions
IBM DB2 as the database of choice for robust, enterprise-wide solutions handling high-volume
workloads and optimized to deliver industry-leading performance while lowering costs. IBM
DB2 is used by many big insurance companies, for example, VSP, the leading vision insurance
company, run its entire business on IBM DB2. While IBM DB2 is not likely to over perform
Oracle in market share, it is definitely secured in the second position.
SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE), formerly Sybase, is a high-performance, mission-
critical database management system that gives customers an operational advantage by
lowering costs and risks. Sybase used to be one of the big 3 database giants (with Oracle and
DB2) dominating the database field, but Sybase lost its momentum overtime, and eventually
was sold out to SAP really cheap. Sybase database was widely used in banking industry, such
as Wells Fargo Bank. It is unclear what would be the future outlook of SAP/Sybase database
product since it depends on how SAP plan to position the ASE. Currently SAP Adaptive Server
Enterprise (SAP Sybase ASE) is marketed as the affordable relational database management
system (RDBMS) designed for high-performance transaction-based applications involving
massive volumes of data – and thousands of concurrent users. In short, SAP/Sybase database
is still a significant player, but its future is unclear.
Contemporary Management practices and Global Management Practices-ORACLE
Department of MBA, PES University 26
Microsoft SQL Server is a comprehensive database software platform providing enterprise-
class data management and integrated business intelligence (BI) tools. Even though as a late
starter in database, Microsoft has made strategic investments to push its SQLServer to the
frontline to compete with Oracle and DB2 head-to-head. As the foundation of Microsoft's
comprehensive data platform, SQL Server delivers breakthrough performance for mission-
critical applications, using in-memory technologies, faster insights from any data to any user
in familiar tools like Excel, and a resilient platform for building, deploying, and managing
solutions that span on-premises and cloud. Microsoft offers deep discounts to education sectors
including public schools, universities, and public agencies in education, which helped
SQLServer gain user base significantly.
Oracle Enterprise Server, designed for grid computing, is the best RDBMS, running on
multiple platforms, with the latest version 12c, in which the "c" is for cloud computing. In
the IT industry, Oracle is "THE DATABASE." If you want to become a database
administrator (DBA), make sure you are the Oracle DBA, and you are all set for your career.
Oracle has the unshakeable market share in database field with big corporations, government
agencies, and mission-critical data centers running on Oracle database in the Real
Application Cluster (RAC) environment. Job opportunities with Oracle database are always
there.

MySQL. An open source database, is the most popular database for web-based business
applications, and is moving to enterprise level. MySQL is the most popular database for
internet systems such as e-commerce and dynamic website. If you run your own blog with
WordPress, you are using MySQL. Many of the world's largest and fastest-growing
organizations including Facebook, Google, Adobe, Alcatel Lucent and Zappos rely on MySQL
to save time and money powering their high-volume Web sites, business-critical systems and
packaged software. MySQL is now in Oracle's hands but still maintains its independence.
Teradata Database, with an interesting tagline, - "When the world gets smaller, the data
gets bigger," is the most powerful Very Large Database (VLDB) system. Nowadays the
concept of VLDB has shifted to Big Data which focuses on the value of data for business
decision-making. Many large scale data warehousing and business intelligence systems are
powered by Teradata. Teradata database is often used by big retailers and telecom enterprises.
Teradata offers some unique features: the intelligent optimizer to process queries and filter
data to efficiently respond to any request, applying that query power to dynamic data without
adding columns to your table to accept new data.

Software AG is the maker of Adabas. Adabas once was the most powerful mainframe
database, now runs in multiple platforms, and provides superior reliability and performance.
Software AG says that Adabas is the comprehensive and scalable enterprise database
management system optimized for big data and designed for reliability, high performance and
low total cost of ownership. Available for mainframe, Linux®, UNIX® and Windows®
(LUW) platforms. ADABAS is integrated with NATURAL, - Software AG's application

Microsoft Access is the most used desktop database application in Windows. Coming with
the Microsoft Office suite, Access is cheap and accessible from most Windows laptops and
workstations. Although mainly considered as a desktop database, Access becomes ever popular
database for internet systems, - many e-commerce and content management systems is
powered by Access database running on the Microsoft's IIS web server platform. Skills of
Microsoft Access are always in demand, although the pay may not be great.
Informix, now under IBM, once was the most promising object-oriented database. It had
been speculated that the object-oriented database would one day replace the traditional
RDBMS (relational database management system), which means Infomix could have taken
over Oracle in the IT world, but it had never happened. Thus as a falling star, Infomix was
acquired by IBM. The latest version of Infomix has built with some new features, such as

NoSQL capability, which unleashes the way to combine unstructured and structured data in a
smart way, bringing NoSQL to the SQL database.
FileMaker was the #1-selling easy-to-use database software for Windows and Mac OS.
However, on the rise of Microsoft Access, FileMake has lost its competitive edge in the
Windows environment, which forced FileMaker strategically build strength on the Mac
platform. FileMaker, Inc., is now an Apple subsidiary, which may secure FileMaker's future
supported by the strength of Apple products. FileMaker Server maximizes performance of
shared databases while increasing security.

metrics with which corporate objectives are aligned. Managers should regularly
communicate these objectives with their associates & make it clear that each individual can
contribute to achieve them.
 Demonstrate initiative – Managers & associate should together generate new ideas and
strategies that make the company stronger.
 Demonstrate courage – Managers should make clear decisions and demonstrate
determination in implementing them.
 Keep your associates informed – Managers should provide factual information to their
associates and keep them informed about the happenings in the company.
 Lead by goals – Managers delegate the tasks and give their associates the authority to
perform them.
 Give feedback to your associates- Employees are given feedback and appraisal for the
work done or goal achieved.

3.4 Strategy
The biggest challenge for Oracle Corporation is to tap the SMB segment, where there
seems to be an enormous growth potential and the segment not being tapped well by the major
players. Oracle has formed strategies for entering this segment and the same can be discussed
as below:
Oracle into SMB Segment
E-Business Suite Special Edition of the Oracle Corporation will be a channel only product.
The vendor being applications-focused company and key element of its SMB applications
market on its ability to mobilize the channel. The company’s commitment to SMB partners
rests on the foundation built over the past few years.
Challenges:
- The development of a more comprehensive partner road map that defines rewards and
commitments at each level of the partner program specific to this initiative.
- Greater emphasis on mentoring new partners in the sales consulting and
implementation processes via training and the creation of close working links between
new partners and its consulting group.
New SMB Application Strategy
Oracle has made significant structural and procedural shifts in its partnering strategy and
channel field practices that include broader partner access to Oracle’s product line and higher
levels of accountability for field execution. Oracle is making commitments to partners in the

success of specific partner initiatives meaningful to the company’s strategic direction. That’s
what makes the company’s E-Business Suite Special Edition channel strategy so important.
SMB Market Segmentation
Oracle has segmented the SMB market into three tiers: the lower tier (companies with
less than $100M in annual revenue), mid-tier (companies from $101M to $500M in annual
revenue), and upper tier (companies with more than $500M in revenue).
SMBs should certainly consider Oracle when they are looking for new applications.
The products and associated tools and services are very competitive on functionality and price,
but the marketing and channels are still a work in progress.
SMB and midmarket business, it has to address the following issues:
- The perception that Oracle’s applications and technology are designed for very large
enterprises
- The lack of market visibility of its SMB products and channels
- The confusion associated with positioning multiple product lines and channels in
overlapping size and vertical segments
Oracle Cloud Strategy
One of the booming services provided by Oracle is cloud service. Strategies inculcated to
achieve Cloud Strategy are:

CHAPTER-5
SUMMARY OF LEARNING EXPERIENCE
Oracle is 2nd Largest Software Company in the world followed by Microsoft. As a part of
my Summer Internship Program at Oracle, I was put under HCM TEAM and provided with work
to “Conduct Market Survey on Company Database”.
5.1.Market Survey on Company Database
Market Survey: It is one of the most primary step of marketing in a company. Market survey
can be done through Tele calling, e-mails, LinkedIn, Social media or Personal meetings.
Company Database: Here company database is referred to the Applications used by the
companies to maintain the HCM process (Compensation and Payrolls, Recruitment & Sourcing,
Absence management etc.) in the company. For this HCM process, software like ORACLE, SAP,
IBM etc. are used.
Summer Internship Program at ORACLE has been very instructive for me. ORACLE has
offered me opportunities to learn and develop myself in many areas. A lot of the tasks and activities
that I have worked on during my internship are familiar with what I’m studying at the moment. I
worked in many areas where I did different work relating IT industry software and database used
by companies. This gave me the chance to find out which areas I want work in after my education.
As I had done mini project in BRM previous year on “Consumer perception about E-
Wallets”, I had some knowledge about market survey before my internship started but when I
actually started my work it was whole new experience as I learnt about Lead Generation, Blind
Calling and Follow-up calling and evenlearnt about Human Capital Management and it had
mainly boosted my communication skills. I have learned to work in a business organization and
apply my knowledge into practice.

  • 6. Contemporary Management practices and Global Management Practices-ORACLE Department of MBA, PES University 6 CHAPTER-1 INDUSTRY PROFILE Companies in and outside the information technology (IT) industry employ information technology workers. While one might think of the typical IT worker as employed by a major software company or systems developer, the reality is that nine out of ten IT workers are found in banks, insurance companies, manufacturing plants or other non-IT businesses. A new survey by the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) shows that not only are IT workers found mostly outside the IT industry, but that the outlook and prospects for the two groups is likely to be far different. In previous years, characterized by double digit growth and anxious investors betting on the next new thing, careers inside the IT industry appeared to be the way to go—at least for those on the professional fast track. Much has changed since 2001, even as the economy slowly recovers and the overall size of the IT workforce approaches its historic high point of 10.4 million. The employment footing outside the IT industry seems surer, less turbulent. Non-IT companies are more likely to hire according to plan, far less likely to move jobs overseas, more apt to increase—not cut—compensation. Whether non-IT companies offer IT workers long-term career advantages or just a temporary “port in the storm” remains to be seen. IT companies are hard pressed by customers to field cost effective solutions. The pressure on IT companies to cut costs is clearly reflected in this survey. This survey is a continuation of the ITAA series of reports on the IT workforce. Since 1997, ITAA has tracked employer demand for IT workers. In the run up to the year 2000, IT talent was scarce and demand exceeded supply. Because of the talent crunch, ITAA focused on the skills most demanded by employers and the education and training alternatives for gaining those skills. With job market conditions changing, ITAA’s survey has evolved to explore how trends like offshore development may be changing the employment landscape.
  • 7. Contemporary Management practices and Global Management Practices-ORACLE Department of MBA, PES University 7 This survey reports findings in nine areas:  Total IT workforce size  Future demand for IT workers  Demand in specific job categories  Hiring and layoff activity  Success at hiring to plan  Skills attainment  Recruitment  Offshore development  Compensation MAJOR PLAYERS  IBM DB2  SAP SYBASE ASE  ORACLE RDBMS  MYSQL  MICROSOFT SQL SERVER  TEREDATA  FILE MAKER  ADABAS  MICROSOFT ACCESS  INFOMIX
  • 8. Contemporary Management practices and Global Management Practices-ORACLE Department of MBA, PES University 8 CHAPTER-2 COMPANY PROFILE 2.1.Background & Inception of ORACLE It all began Three and a half decades ago when Larry Ellison, saw an opportunity other companies missed: a description of a working prototype for a relational database. No company had committed to commercializing the technology, but Ellison and co-founders Bob Miner and Ed Oates realized the tremendous business potential of the relational database model. None of them realized at the time that the company they formed would change the face of business computing forever. Throughout its history Oracle has proved it can build for the future on the foundation of its innovations and its knowledge of customer challenges and successes analyzed by the best technical and business minds in the world. Today Oracle is the leader in database software and as it has further developed technologies and acquired best-in-class companies over the years, that leadership has expanded to the entire technology stack, from servers and storage, to database and middleware, through applications and into the cloud. What does Oracle have in store for tomorrow? We will continue to provide our customers with hardware and software engineered to work together integrated from disk to applications that meet their business needs and solve their business problems. And we will continue to innovate and to lead the industry, while always making sure that we focus on solving the problems of the customers who rely on our technology.

Competitors Information IBM DB2 is the database management system that delivers a flexible and cost-effective database platform to build robust on demand business applications. The IBM DB2 Universal Database (UDB) Enterprise Server Edition (ESE) is one of the best RDBMS. IBM positions IBM DB2 as the database of choice for robust, enterprise-wide solutions handling high-volume workloads and optimized to deliver industry-leading performance while lowering costs. IBM DB2 is used by many big insurance companies, for example, VSP, the leading vision insurance company, run its entire business on IBM DB2. While IBM DB2 is not likely to over perform Oracle in market share, it is definitely secured in the second position. SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE), formerly Sybase, is a high-performance, mission- critical database management system that gives customers an operational advantage by lowering costs and risks. Sybase used to be one of the big 3 database giants (with Oracle and DB2) dominating the database field, but Sybase lost its momentum overtime, and eventually was sold out to SAP really cheap. Sybase database was widely used in banking industry, such as Wells Fargo Bank. It is unclear what would be the future outlook of SAP/Sybase database product since it depends on how SAP plan to position the ASE. Currently SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise (SAP Sybase ASE) is marketed as the affordable relational database management system (RDBMS) designed for high-performance transaction-based applications involving massive volumes of data – and thousands of concurrent users. In short, SAP/Sybase database is still a significant player, but its future is unclear.

Contemporary Management practices and Global Management Practices-ORACLE Department of MBA, PES University 26 Microsoft SQL Server is a comprehensive database software platform providing enterprise- class data management and integrated business intelligence (BI) tools. Even though as a late starter in database, Microsoft has made strategic investments to push its SQLServer to the frontline to compete with Oracle and DB2 head-to-head. As the foundation of Microsoft's comprehensive data platform, SQL Server delivers breakthrough performance for mission- critical applications, using in-memory technologies, faster insights from any data to any user in familiar tools like Excel, and a resilient platform for building, deploying, and managing solutions that span on-premises and cloud. Microsoft offers deep discounts to education sectors including public schools, universities, and public agencies in education, which helped SQLServer gain user base significantly. Oracle Enterprise Server, designed for grid computing, is the best RDBMS, running on multiple platforms, with the latest version 12c, in which the "c" is for cloud computing. In the IT industry, Oracle is "THE DATABASE." If you want to become a database administrator (DBA), make sure you are the Oracle DBA, and you are all set for your career. Oracle has the unshakeable market share in database field with big corporations, government agencies, and mission-critical data centers running on Oracle database in the Real Application Cluster (RAC) environment. Job opportunities with Oracle database are always there.

An open source database, is the most popular database for web-based business applications, and is moving to enterprise level. MySQL is the most popular database for internet systems such as e-commerce and dynamic website. If you run your own blog with WordPress, you are using MySQL. Many of the world's largest and fastest-growing organizations including Facebook, Google, Adobe, Alcatel Lucent and Zappos rely on MySQL to save time and money powering their high-volume Web sites, business-critical systems and packaged software. MySQL is now in Oracle's hands but still maintains its independence. Teradata Database, with an interesting tagline, - "When the world gets smaller, the data gets bigger," is the most powerful Very Large Database (VLDB) system. Nowadays the concept of VLDB has shifted to Big Data which focuses on the value of data for business decision-making. Many large scale data warehousing and business intelligence systems are powered by Teradata. Teradata database is often used by big retailers and telecom enterprises. Teradata offers some unique features: the intelligent optimizer to process queries and filter data to efficiently respond to any request, applying that query power to dynamic data without adding columns to your table to accept new data.
