Community Links undertook a programme of research to understand the real effects of these changes to people’s lives – not just financially but also on employment opportunities, family life, their health, wellbeing and resilience. It is vital to fully evaluate the implementation of welfare reform on the individuals and communities most affected. Tipping the Balance? our investigation into the cumulative impacts of welfare reform, draws a vivid picture of how hard life has become for many local people as a result of the changes.
This report makes a series of practicable recommendations towards providing better support for people facing multiple disadvantages within a welfare system that is fairer and more effective.

Internship Abstract
The purpose of the internship was to develop a mental health resource guide for Middlesex County residents. There was a 128% increase in behavioral health patients seen in emergency departments, and many community leaders lacked knowledge to recognize and refer clients in crisis. The guide defines behavioral health issues, lists local facilities, and was created through collaboration with 20 stakeholder organizations. It will be distributed in summer 2016 to community leaders to help them assist clients and encourage residents to address their mental health needs. Evaluation surveys will assess the guide's effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.

It is vital to fully evaluate the implementation of welfare reform on the individuals and communities most affected. Tipping the Balance? our investigation into the cumulative impacts of welfare reform, draws a vivid picture of how hard life has become for many local people as a result of the changes.
This report makes a series of practicable recommendations towards providing better support for people facing multiple disadvantages within a welfare system that is fairer and more effective.

Internship Abstract
The purpose of the internship was to develop a mental health resource guide for Middlesex County residents. There was a 128% increase in behavioral health patients seen in emergency departments, and many community leaders lacked knowledge to recognize and refer clients in crisis. The guide defines behavioral health issues, lists local facilities, and was created through collaboration with 20 stakeholder organizations. It will be distributed in summer 2016 to community leaders to help them assist clients and encourage residents to address their mental health needs. Evaluation surveys will assess the guide's effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.

Prevention of Maternal Mortality_Weiss
Jennifer Weiss presented on addressing maternal mortality in Malawi through maternal death audits. Maternal death reviews began in 2003 at district hospitals in Malawi and were expanded in 2013 to a more robust Maternal Death Surveillance and Response system. This system identifies and notifies facilities of maternal deaths to determine causes and how they may have been prevented. Facility-level audits in Nkhotakota District found that referrals from health centers, lack of clinician training, and laboratory capacity needed improvement. Community-level audits also began but faced challenges in discussing deaths due to tradition; education was needed to explain how audits could reduce mortality. Further integration of community and facility audits with follow-up actions was recommended
