3. Who Are Caregivers?
Caregivers (or informal caregivers)
are unpaid family members, friends,
or neighbors that assist with activities
of daily living and/or medical tasks.

• About 34.2 million Americans
have provided unpaid care to an
adult age 50 or older in the last
12 months.
• 15.7 million adult caregivers care
for someone who has Alzheimer's
disease or other dementia.

6. Caregivers as Part of the Team
• Partnerships with patients and caregivers are key
to managing chronic conditions
• Caregivers are your “inside man”
• Teamwork makes the dream work – but it isn’t
always that simple!
7. Communicating Effectively with Caregivers
• Discuss caregiver expectations about response times to
queries
• Agree in advance on how much can be addressed in a
single office visit
• Discuss role of other staff in your office/on the team (e.g.,
social workers)
• Communicate, communicate, communicate…
