At the end of the lesson, the students should be
able to:
i. Define Internet
ii. List the features of the Internet
iii. Name the Internet facilities & resources
iv. identify the benefits and problems of the
Internet
DEFINITION
Internet is an acronym for International
Network. It is also called the Net.
In real sense, the Internet is a conglomerate of
thousand of computer networks utilizing
different set of protocols to create a
worldwide communication medium. The
physical layer of the Internet connects users
on telephone, satellite, & cable network; local
area networks (LANs) and Wide area networks
(WANs).
FEATURES OF THE INTERNET
• Real time information retrieval and transfer
• Global access
• Interactive GUI (Graphic User Interface)
• Dynamic
INTERNET FACILITIES & RESOURCES
The services of the Internet are accessed
through various application programs
available for a variety of computer operating
system. These services include the following;
• E-mail,
• E-news
• Information access
• Gopher
• World Wide Web
• Access & Control
WEB SITE
A web site is a collection of related
documents. It is a collection of data stored in
special computers. A web site can be arts,
music, education, entertainment, sports,
politics, religion, health, culture,
transportation, research, etc.
E-MAIL ADDRESS
E-mail address is a registered domain or
address through which one can send and
receive messages, letters, pictures etc.
Examples of e-mail address are listed below
depending on the domain site;
i. ayoadetayo@yahoo.com
ii. korede@hotmail.com
iii. austine@gmail.com
DOMAIN NAMES
DNS specifies the machine and site on which
the user is registered. There were initially
five different domains and organisations
have to fall into one category.
i. .edu- for Educational Institution
ii. .com- for Companies
iii. .org- for Organisations
iv. .gov- for Government
v. .net-for Network Companies
DOMAIN NAMES (Con’t)
Countries were later added with distinct
identification such as;
 .uk- for United Kingdom
 .gh- for Ghana
 .ng- for Nigeria
 .za- for South Africa
 .eg- for Egypt

PROBLEMS OF THE INTERNET
Some of the destructive ways and problems posed by the
Internet include:
• Pornographic materials
• Acts of wickedness i.e. deliberate infection of computer with
virus etc
• Illegal transfers in banks
• Currency counterfeiting
• Theft of intellectual property right
• Recipes for crime
• Fraud
• Insecurity treat, breaking into security system of companies or
nations
• Contact forum for hate groups, terrorists e.t.c.
• Addiction
Addiction
• Addiction refers to staying online for 38 hours
or more in a week in leisure time.
• Reports indicated that addiction could lead to
debt, sack, child or family neglect, divorce etc
• Addicted youth result in lying about the
amount of time or money spent on the
Internet. Neglect of social obligation, poor
academic performance in school etc are all
parts of the negative effect of the Internet
addiction.
