EMIP and Sanabel, the network of microfinance institutions in the Arab countries, held a conference in Tunis on 5 May 2008 on the subject "Microfinance in the Mediterranean: what impact?", which brought together over 420 participants to engage in debate with some thirty speakers from microcredit institutions, the banking sector, finance institutions, academia and civil society. The conference saw the unveiling of a study on the economic and social impact of microfinance in the Mediterranean designed to foster a better understanding of the outlook for microfinance in the region.
This presentation is about leveraging remittances for development by linking with microfinance institutions.
This was the pitch presentation I prepared for my MBA New Venture Project. I am very proud of the project, but would have liked a little more freedom with the presentation format.

What is Legacy? What does the word mean and how can we leave a “legacy” behind? If we look at the meaning in a dictionary, one would assume that we are talking about a static thing. However, when we talk about the legacy of association meetings, we could not be further from the truth! Whether it is the wealth of knowledge shared, the advancement of science, eradication of illnesses, changes of policy or creating awareness for a societal affliction, legacy is dynamic, develops organically and grows exponentially in accordance with the number of contributors supporting it. Whether we work for an association, venue, bureau or meeting organiser, we can all contribute to legacies. Join this session and be inspired to go further by being the force behind the creation of gifts and legacies for generations to come.

Always Ready – A Televised Life Jacket Wear CampaignNASBLA
This session will present recreational boating safety’s new 30-second life jacket TV commercial, Always Ready, scheduled for distribution on fishing programs this summer. The commercials are scheduled to broadcast more than 1,100 times on seven popular television networks including the Discovery Channel and the Outdoor Channel with a total audience of 238.1 million American households. Fishing is one of America’s most popular activities and anglers are one of boating’s most at-risk groups – in 2020 35.3% of fatal boating incidents occurred during fishing outings. The 30-second Always Ready commercials are supported by a longer web-based docu-mercial each reminding anglers to always wear a life jacket while boating. This short session will share the campaign’s creative content and early results. If time allows, additional Water Sports Foundation life jacket outreach materials will be presented encouraging attendees to use them freely!

This synthesis review of key factors supporting small-scale coastal fisheries management was commissioned by the Rockefeller Foundation through a contract with Itad Ltd. The work was carried out by a team based at IMM Ltd, in Exeter, UK, from July to September 2013.
It was designed to provide an evidence base on the success factors in small-scale coastal fisheries management in developing countries and, in turn, to assist the Rockefeller Foundation in developing its strategy for its Oceans and Fisheries Initiative. In doing so, it identifies and describes some 20 key factors believed to influence success in small-scale coastal fisheries management.
The synthesis first presents an outline of the methods used in the study followed by a background of coastal fisheries, an introduction to fisheries management themes, and a review and discussion of some of the critical factors that influence success. It then offers some conclusions and possible ways forward.

Are Gutters Necessary? Explore the details now!AmeliaLauren3
Gutters are typically installed at a slight downward slope to allow water to flow freely towards downspouts or drains – the downspout being the vertical pipe attached to the gutters. The water is subsequently transported by the downspout to either the ground or an underground drainage system. Maintaining a gutter system that is free of blockages and functional requires regular maintenance.
But, many wonder in what situations gutters are required and not required. In this ppt we will discuss in detail the matter, ‘Are Gutters Necessary?’

Editor's Notes
Over 1000 lives lost on commercial vessels
World Health Organisation estimates 360,000 drownings per year International Life Saving put the number at 1.1m…there is no accurate figure we just know, it is too many and many of the lives could have been saved with better maritime SAR servies available.
We also know that many more lives would have been lost if not for the great work done by SAR organisations across the globe.

Every 4 years maritime SAR comes together for the World Maritime Rescue Congress.
This year hosted by members the DGzRS it was the turn of Bremerhaven to act as the venue for this world class event.
3 days of workshops with 70 international speakers, 275 delegates, 223 lifeboat crew, 50 exhibitors and some 25,000 people through the exhibition made this one of the if not the biggest maritime SAR event of the year.
The goal is to bring the maritime SAR world together and that goal was achieved.
Investing the limited resources of the IMRF in areas where the most impact can be achieved has lead to the partnership work with the IMO in Africa. As a neutral in a highly political environment the IMRF has helped bring together bordering countries to work together and improve the individual and regional maritime SAR coordination and response capability.Regional agreements have been agreed and implemented, regional RC’s appointed and most importantly common training on SAR management, administration and coordination is being delivered. Cooperation, collaboration and communication both operationally and strategically has improved.

Study into ferry accidents identified a high proportion occurring in the AP region with Indonesia, Philippines and Bangladesh in the top 4 for accidents and fatalities.
MRO as mentioned before is a challenge for both developed and developing countries. For 7 years the IMRF has lead the charge on raising the profile of the issue and encouraging states and SAR organisations to be prepared, have plans and have at least considered how to respond but more importantly have a plan for response.
Mass Rescue Operations are charactorised by the need for immediate response to large numbers of persons in distress such that the capabilities normally available to the search and rescue authorities are inadequate.
The challenge is that any major incident will test responders apabilities. Maritime MRO are particularly challenging. They are low probability/ high consequences events. Because of the scale the unpredictability of such incidents effective preparedness and response strategies are essential.
The high profile events such has the Sewol and Costa Concordia tend to shade other incidents around the world. A recent ferry accident report completed by the IMRF identified over 17,000 fatalities in ferry accidents over the past 10 years, most of these in developing countries, most of these MRO and very few of them reported in mainstream media.
The IMRF provides workshops on MRO, has run 3 international conferences on the topic, we have developed an open source on-line library of resources on the topic and continue to use our consultative status at the IMO to help improve safety and response to these events.
. Exchange practical experience and best practices between European Maritime Emergency Search and Rescue (MESR) organisations to support improvements in quality of VET practices;
2. Facilitate participants in personal development, acquiring skills and employablity within European rescue activities;
3. Develop and maintain a transnational communication platform for cooperation between MESR organisations, exchanging results, evaluations and experiences;
4. Improve the knowledge of the Maritime English terminology for Lifeboat Crew members (as English is the world-wide and European working language in maritime organisations).

Over 5,000 lines of guidance
Available via the IMRF web-site
Donated lifejackets distributed to developing SAR organisations.
Just a small gesture that made a big impact.
Currently looking for equipment to assist SAR groups in the Med dealing with the migrant challenge
IMRF members are increasingly looking at ways of educating people heading out on the water so they are less likely to find themselves in distress. There are great initiatives and programmes being run and we see our role as making other organisations aware of these initiatives and encouraging the sharing of the successful and not so successful activities.
Some would say that saving lives at sea starts on land.
We have dedicated a web-site to this project and encourage our members to provide content they are able to share. This is a new initiative and still needs work but is starting to link organisations and share good ideas.
Developed countries SAR structures are well established and tend to work well…one of the biggest challenges they face are abnormal, think MH370 and large scale incidents.
There is an increase expectation from the public and greater visibility with social media and instant news. SAR services struggle to keep ahead of the public knowledge of incidents or in some cases the misinformation the public receive through social media.
Because of this transperancy SAR services risk being exposed and judged during the event sometimes with tragic consequences. An example was the public pressure and then political pressure put on the Sewol rescuers to put divers into and unstable submerged vessel in low visibility with strong currents. One diver lost his life and 2 received serious injuries.
There is an increasing “need” in society to have someone to blame which again puts pressure on the rescue services if for some reason the rescue is not successful, the SEWOL again is an example of the Coastguard being dispbanded because of the accident. Or US Coastguard being pressured into restarting the search for the missing yachtsmen on the Cheeki Rafiki , the headline reading “U.S. coastguards cave in and resume the hunt after huge petition”….
All of this means there needs to be greater investment in training, planning and exercises to ensure all are ready to respond and to reduce the risk of being “blamed” for a lack of preparation…This at a time when budgets are being reduced and funding is getting tighter.;
Developing countries and organisations face the same challenges but have the added disadvantage of other crisises taking higher priority with the decision makers.
There has never been a more important time For the IMRF to find ways of supporting the sector
As touched on in the previous slide, things are tougher there is a greater accountability for funds received and at times the “intangible value” of much of what is maritime SAR is lost on the purse holders, until of course there is a disaster, but even then the memories are short and at times the crisis will be replaced by something even bigger, such is the power of the media. Technology continues to charge forward which is a positive thing…but which device or system to choose and the risk of “something better” arriving tomorrow makes decision making and investment a challenge.
WE are seeing a scaling back in many countries of the forces and the government resources available for SAR which in turn is increasing the demand on the volunteer service. There remains in many countries a degree of animosity between the paid and the unpaid professionals made stronger when some governmental servies are being scaled back. This however is where strong partnerships are needed and good leadership at the top level of the government and non-government organisations to maximise the combined capabilities to ensure lives get saved.
