E-learning can be a very useful instrument to break down barriers and improve the life’s quality of people who don’t have any future because of war, conflicts, socioeconomic problems or humanitarian crisis. E-learning enables to study in the worst conditions, even when students are on the move, as long as the students are provided by internet connexion and a computer or an electronic device.
The UOC's experience with the scholarships programme for refugees is a good example of this.
Currently, the UOC is running a pilot scholarship programme in order to allow refugees to study and palliate the situation of those living in refugee camps. There have been two calls for applications this year: one of them was last February and the second one was in September. The UOC awards 61 scholarships in all (languages and specialization certificates).
At the first call, there were Syrian students who were living in refugee settlements in Greece but some of them were on the move during the course. In September, the University have offered specializations in the fields of nutrition, health, development cooperation, humanitarian aid, translation, marketing and quality management.
This pilot test allows us to identified some challenges and opportunities of e-learning for refugees and asylum seekers.
Challenges: Focus of action, access and recognition, language, psychosocial approach, cultural aspects, participation and motivation, connectivity and technology, virtual platform limitations, security and data protection, non segmented educational incorporation, funding sources.
Opportunities: breaking inequality and right for education, building a project of life, leaving the camps, offering useful and quality programmes, incorporating gender perspective, working with local organizations, community engagement: volunteers, online university as an integration place: mentorship, global and social student abilities and social media.

The project aims to create an inclusive education learning community in Ukraine to support students with disabilities. It plans to develop and implement inclusive education training programs for teachers and parents across Ukraine, including remote areas. The goals are to establish a network of education professionals and parents focused on inclusive practices and form a Ukrainian consortium of universities to promote inclusive education policies. The project has held various seminars and workshops on inclusive topics. It also created textbooks and online resources to share information. Moving forward, it will develop strategies for remote learning of students with special needs during the pandemic.

Tamra Willis presented research on using wikispaces for teaching and learning. The primary research question was how wikis can improve instruction and student achievement. Through research of articles and assigned texts, the major findings were that wikis increase student engagement and motivation through collaborative learning experiences. MOOCs provide geographically independent and affordable or free education to anyone with internet access through new presentations of educational materials. They have the potential to democratize education by transferring knowledge to younger generations and shaping curriculums around individual student interests, opposing standardized education. While MOOCs increase access to education, their economic sustainability is unclear. Higher levels of education have been linked to greater economic productivity and GDP, so MOOCs may increase incomes if participants attain higher education levels through the courses. This study aims to test the hypothesis that individuals who take MOOCs earn higher average incomes than matched individuals who do not take MOOCs.

The UK and China have a strong bilateral relationship in education that is a high priority for both countries. They established an annual education summit in 2004 to facilitate cooperation. There are many ongoing partnerships between UK and Chinese universities, including student and faculty exchanges, training programs, and joint research initiatives. China is also an important market for UK universities, sending over 50,000 students to study in the UK annually. Transnational education programs have also been growing, with over 100 UK courses and two Sino-foreign university partnerships operating in China.

The DI4all project aims to promote digital inclusion and tackle disinformation through education. Led by Ossiannilsson Quality in Open Online Learning Consultancy in Sweden and Lithuanian College of Democracy, the project will train educators on digital inclusion best practices and develop teaching materials over 2022-2024 with €60,000 in funding. Expected outcomes include training of trainers, an educator guide, studies of best practices, and events to share learning around digital inclusion for students, educators, and schools.

Participants will then discuss design issues such as assessment, sustainability, and ethical issues, and will make a plan for revising or creating a new open pedagogy activity in their own context.
