The European gas package
3. 1. EU Hydrogen and Decarbonised Gas Markets Package:
EU Commission 2020 Hydrogen Strategy: “Renewable electricity is
expected to decarbonise a large share of the EU energy consumption by
2050, but not all of it. Hydrogen has a strong potential to bridge some of
this gap, as a vector for renewable energy storage, alongside batteries,
and transport, ensuring back up for seasonal variations and connecting
production locations to more distant demand centres.”
Frans Timmermans, 15 December 2021:
“We know that electricity alone cannot deliver all the energy we'll
need in the future, and renewable and other low-carbon gases will
increasingly replace fossil fuels… To deliver those volumes to end-users
in the most effective and low-cost manner, we need competitive
markets and infrastructure to connect production and consumption.”

90 European gas distribution companies
and organisations working together to
support the built-up of a strong hydrogen
market and create a common European
understanding of the future related to the
transformation of the gas distributors
towards climate neutrality.
37 project partners have joined forces to
investigate the question of how a regional
and secure supply of climate-neutral gases
can be implemented nationwide in the
future.
