What I Wanted to Learn Coming In
--Marketing
-With a major in public relations and advertising, I haven’t been as
exposed to marketing. I was excited to learn more and try something new.
--Office
-To learn how offices work in general and specifically Indiana Blood
Center being a not for profit.
--Networking
-Gain networking skills, learn to speak up and put myself out there in
collaborative settings.
-Learn how to express my opinions and how to accept critiques and use
those for improvement.
--Being a Voice
-Learning how to speak on behalf on something larger. To gain an
understanding of the voice of a cause; how to both create and implement.
--Power of Branding
-Experience all the inner workings of brand power and messaging
-Be involved in the implementation of a well developed message

My Take on The Industry
I Represented the 90%- I have really never been exposed to donating blood
-No one in my family is a donor
-I saw the beds in my school as I passed by the gym but looked away
at the thought of needles
-I had no clue how it worked- process, what it does, where it goes,
benefits, needs
-I knew who they were but frankly could care less, I was the unaffected
I joined the 10%- I loved learning all about the intricate processes
-Really found it fascinating and I feel others could to
-Realize the need, there is no substitution
Opportunity- Mobile Understanding
-People who come into donor centers are probably already donors or know
someone who is. Let’s tap into the unaware, make the mobiles more inviting and well
branded with both catchy and informative language.
-Will increase awareness and understanding of passersby and hope to get
them asking questions.
You made me a believer, now out for the rest of the Hoosiers.

Likes.
• Challenged- Doing things you’ve never done before allows for on-the-job learning, this
requires you to understand reaction time, putting the best product out there and the
balance of when to ask for help and when to figure things out on your own
•Transition to Marketing
•Figuring out how book learning transitions to real life
• Trusted- Being put in charge of something really gives you courage and allows you to step out
of your ‘intern’ box, gives you motivation to work harder to prove you can be trusted
•Social Media
• Needed- Makes you value the company you work for and feel you are being utilized
•Constant work to be done
•Little down time
Great Coworkers- was treated with respect and care

Dislikes.
• Diversified Exposure- Would have liked to experience different aspects of the process
•Viewed a media interview happening
•Seen inner workings of how to prepare for it
•Learn more about budget
•How it works to allocate funds within a not for profit
•Been present for an ‘Urgent Need’
•Not great for business but good for exposure on crisis communication
•Lack of Internal Communication
•In the works but its frustrating to know you are putting out a specific and constant message
and your own coworkers aren’t on board
•May be the cause for some misunderstandings of donors, they see a disconnect
between the two messages

Overall Learnings
Jack be Nimble, Jack be Quick- Plan but be ready to
flex and change as things happen, don’t break when
the path changes, anticipate it
ADD Department- Know how to handle a lot of things
happening at once, stay organized and calm
Don’t Assume Anything- Don’t take awareness or
understanding for granted. You’ll have to tell the
audience exactly what you mean, and you’ll probably
have to tell them again.
Use Negativity for Good- Take people’s objections
and use them as a teaching opportunity, both
personally and publically.
-used for personal growth
-used in social media platforms especially
