Reperio, a collaborative, modular and customizable web work environment, provides tools to support research and study in the field of Cultural Heritage and Humanities (editor of ontologies, ontology population, management and editing of texts and images with the possibility of annotations, comments, variations, confrontation between several witnesses, etc.). The vision and mission of Reperio is to help to eliminate isolation within different research communities by facilitating collaborative ways of working and sharing content and resources, while respecting the intellectual property of the individual scholar. Reperio’s characteristics are described on the basis of the significant experience of the Girolamo Cardano Project: The knowledge and arts of the Renaissance.

The project on Cardano involves Reperio on some levels:
1. reconstructing Cardano’s thought and his
specialized vocabulary by developing an ontology based
on Contradicentium Medicorum Libri Duo
2. cataloguing the bibliography of reference
(Cardano’s works, explicit and implicit sources) to
allow indexing and research
3. making the digital edition available online with the
transcription of Contradicentium Medicorum Libri Duo
and other texts related to it
4. providing a collaborative environment for reading,
study, research, and posting semantic annotations and
comments.

Semantic annotation
The annotation through instances: consists of the population or
instantiation of the ontology to later associate one or more
instances to the annotated element. In this way, the annotated
element acquires the property values that describe the instance.
