Components
What is Intelligent Transportation System(ITS)
 Intelligent transportation system (ITS) is the application of
sensing, analysis, control and communications technologies
to ground transportation in order to improve safety, mobility
and efficiency.
ITS and Components
 Wireless communication-Various forms of wireless
communications technologies have been used for intelligent
transportation systems. Radio modem communication
on UHF and VHF frequencies are widely used for short and long
range communication within ITS.
 Computational technologies-Recent advances in vehicle
electronics have led to a move towards fewer, more capable
computer processors on a vehicle. The new embedded
system platforms allow for more sophisticated software
applications to be implemented, including model-based process
control, artificial intelligence, and ubiquitous computing. Perhaps
the most important of these for intelligent transportation systems
is artificial intelligence.
 Sensing-Technological
advances in
telecommunications and
information technology, with
ultramodern/state-of-the-art
microchip, RFID (Radio
Frequency Identification),is
widely used for intelligent
transportation
systems globally.
 Inductive loop detection-
Inductive loops can be placed
in a roadbed to detect vehicles
as they pass through the
loop's magnetic field. The
simplest detectors simply
count the number of vehicles
during a unit of time that pass
over the loop.
 Video vehicle detection-Traffic-flow measurement and automatic
incident detection using video cameras is another form of vehicle
detection. Since video detection systems such as those used
in automatic number plate recognition do not involve installing any
components directly into the road surface or roadbed, this type of
system is known as a "non-intrusive" method of traffic detection.
 Bluetooth detection-Bluetooth is an accurate and inexpensive way to
transmit position from a vehicle in motion. Bluetooth devices in passing
vehicles are detected by sensing devices along the road.
 Radar detection-Radars are mounted on the side of the road to
measure traffic flow and for stopped and stranded vehicle detection
purposes. Like video systems, radar learns its environment during
set up so can distinguish between vehicles and other objects. It can
also operate in conditions of low visibility.
Intelligent Transport System Applications
 Emergency vehicle notification systems
In 2015, the EU passed a law required automobile
manufacturers to equip all new cars with eCall, a European
initiative that assists motorists in the case of a collision. The in-
vehicle eCall is generated either manually by the vehicle
occupants or automatically via activation of in-vehicle sensors
after an accident.
 Automatic road enforcement
A traffic enforcement camera system, consisting of
a camera and a vehicle-monitoring device, is used to detect and
identify vehicles disobeying a speed limit or some other road
legal requirement and automatically ticket offenders based on
the license plate number. Traffic tickets are sent by mail.
Applications:
 Variable speed limits
Road congestion ,traffic and other factors are consider
prior to giving signal to the driver.So,that driver can
change its speed limit accordingly.
 Collision avoidance systems
Japan has installed sensors on its highways to notify
motorists that a car is stalled ahead or there is some
hindrance to the path.
Applications:
 Smart transportation – new business models
New mobility and smart transportation models are
emerging globally. Bike sharing, car
sharing and scooter sharing schemes like Uber or Ola
in India are continuing to gain popularity; electric
vehicle charging schemes are taking off in many cities
like Bangalore and Mumbai; the connected car is a
growing market segment; smart parking solutions are
being used by commuters and shoppers all over the
world.
Benefits of Intelligent Transportation
Systems
i. Better accident management.
ii. Enhanced traffic management and control.
iii. Reducing air and noise pollution, congestion, and
energy consumption.
iv. Broadcasting live road information.
Conclusion:
 Due to several benefits Intelligent Transportation
system is widely used all over the world.
 In India as a part of Smart City Project Intelligent
Transportation system is installed in major road
networks.
 Vehicle manufacturer also installed different
sensors in their vehicles in order to sync with
Intelligent Transportation system.
