IMNCI was developed by UNICEF and WHO in 1995 to improve health worker skills in identifying, treating, and preventing common childhood diseases. It aims to reduce infant and child mortality rates by providing an integrated approach to managing acute respiratory infections, diarrhea, measles, malaria, and malnutrition. The IMNCI protocol uses a color-coding system to determine the appropriate treatment setting and divides case management into two age groups: birth to 2 months and 2 months to 5 years.
