fable to meet their needs?

Lesson 2: Social Studies/
Addressing Social Issues
Read The Hare with Many Friends
Group Work
Discuss
Various social issues related to social media, friends,
and peers
Create
Collage using magazines to describe some of those
issues
Performance
After students create their collage they will take one
social issues and perform a short skit creating
characters, setting, and plot.
Lesson 2: Social Studies/
Addressing Social Issues, Cont.
Moral of the story
Individually students will explain in short
paragraph what they believe the moral of the
story is and how it relates to them.

Lesson 3: Language Arts/
Figurative Language in the fables
By using a green screen app and IPads the
students will work in small groups to retell one of
Aesop’s fables using puppets that they create.
The Language Arts elements of the lesson include
sequencing of events, literary elements such as
simile and metaphor, and using concise language
and sentence structure to retell a story.
The Art elements are used in creating puppets and
a background for the green screen presentation as
well as oral language and expression for
performing the presentation.
This lesson integrates Language Arts, Visual Arts,
Performing Arts, and technology.
Lesson 4:Language Arts and Unit
Conclusion
This lesson will integrate the elements we
have earned of Aesop fables so far with
Music.
Teaching elements of Music:
Tempo
Dynamics
Pitch
Students will compose their own Aesop
Fable in Rap form, with background music
to set the tone and perform it for the class.
This will be a summative assessment

Integrated Unit of Study: Aesop's Fables

Lesson 2: Social Studies/ Addressing Social Issues Read The Hare with Many Friends Group Work Discuss Various social issues related to social media, friends, and peers Create Collage using magazines to describe some of those issues Performance After students create their collage they will take one social issues and perform a short skit creating characters, setting, and plot.

Lesson 3: Language Arts/ Figurative Language in the fables By using a green screen app and IPads the students will work in small groups to retell one of Aesop’s fables using puppets that they create. The Language Arts elements of the lesson include sequencing of events, literary elements such as simile and metaphor, and using concise language and sentence structure to retell a story. The Art elements are used in creating puppets and a background for the green screen presentation as well as oral language and expression for performing the presentation. This lesson integrates Language Arts, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, and technology.
  • 8. Lesson 4:Language Arts and Unit Conclusion This lesson will integrate the elements we have earned of Aesop fables so far with Music. Teaching elements of Music: Tempo Dynamics Pitch Students will compose their own Aesop Fable in Rap form, with background music to set the tone and perform it for the class. This will be a summative assessment

Editor's Notes

  1. This Integrated Unit is targeted at a fifth grade class to teach them about Aesop’s Fables while bringing in a variety of subjects and art elements to enhance their learning experience.
  2. Who was Aesop? Where was he from and what did he do in his life that makes him important? These are some of the questions that we will be asking ourselves over the course of this unit. We will be discussing what a fable is and how it is different than other forms of fiction. We will also discuss how these fables that were written so many years ago can have an impact on our lives today.
  3. For this first lesson we will take a look at three fables and talk about the moral or lesson of each of these. Then you will be assigned a short writing assignment where you will need to relate the moral of each fable to something that could happen today or in your life personally. Then I want you to create an illustration of what you wrote about in your essay.
  4. In this unit we will read Aesop’s Fable The Hare with Many Friends. From the fable we will discuss various social issues students deal with when it comes to friends, enemies, peers and social media. Students will discuss those social issues in their group and use magazine clips to create a collage. Students will then create a 5-10 minute skit that underlines a particular issues using characters, a setting, and a plot. Students will have the opportunity to perform the short skit in front of the entire class. As a assessment to check for understanding students will write a moral of the story and explain how their moral relates to them.
