Intaglio is a printmaking technique where an image is incised into a plate and ink is forced into the incisions before being transferred to paper under pressure. There are two main intaglio techniques - engraving and etching. The basic steps of intaglio printmaking are: 1) designing the image, 2) preparing the copper plate and paper, 3) using engraving tools or acid to cut or etch the design into the plate, 4) inking the plate so that ink fills the incisions, 5) printing the image by applying pressure to transfer the ink from the plate to the paper.
