7. History
Our history dates back to 1929, when Jack Warner, president of Warner Bros. Pictures, founded Music
Publishers Holding Company (“MPHC”) to acquire music copyrights as a means of providing inexpensive
music for films. Encouraged by the success of MPHC, Warner Bros. extended its presence in the music
industry with the founding of Warner Bros. Records in 1958 as a means of distributing movie soundtracks
and further exploiting actors’ contracts. For over 50 years, Warner Bros. Records has led the industry both
creatively and financially with the discovery of many of the world’s biggest recording artists. Warner Bros.
Records acquired Frank Sinatra’s Reprise Records in 1963. Our Atlantic Records label was launched in
1947 by Ahmet Ertegun and Herb Abramson as a small New York-based label focused on jazz and R&B
and Elektra Records was founded in 1950 by Jac Holzman as a folk music label. Atlantic Records and our
Elektra Records label were merged in 2004 to form The Atlantic Records Group. Warner Music Group is
today home to a collection of record labels, including Asylum, Atlantic, Bad Boy, Cordless, East West,
Elektra, Nonesuch, Reprise, Rhino, Roadrunner,Rykodisc, Sire, Warner Bros. and Word.
8. Copyright
The exclusive and assignable legal right, given to the originator for a fixed number of years, to print,
publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material - Definition
My Work:
I need to gain permission from the author to get his/her work, as this will ensure that the music is copyright
free and the artists receives all the credit for their work. Therefore for my music video I need to mention
the fact that the song I will use does not belong to me and is only being used for educational purpose as
well as crediting the author for their work.
9. My Research
What I have found out
From my institution research I have found out that the main music institution companies focus on all types
of music genres but R&B, POP and Hip Hop are the most popular within our modern society. Therefore i
decided to do Hip Hop for my actual music video because it's not only one of the most popular genres but
fits perfectly into my target audience, which are teenagers. I have also found out that copyright is very
important whilst making a music video because we don't owe any rights to the music and work of the
artist. Therefore whilst filming my actual music video i need to be careful about the music I use, and
ensure i get permission to record people, as not everyone will accept to be recorded without their
permission. Lastly, majority of Hip Hop music video's are performance or performance/narrative, therefore
I decided to make my music video, performance with parts of narrative as it fits best to my music genre of
Hip Hop. As Hip Hop music video's mainly focus on the rapper performing to the camera, with some
scenes of narrative to show us the background story of his lyrics, using the music video.
