Why the Record
Label is
Important
 The record label an artist
is attached to can have a
dramatic impact on the
success the artist receives
in the industry. The record
label must have the same
vision and drive as the
artist in order to gain
recognition and popularity.
The relationship between
the record label and the
artist is crucial and is a
two-way street, both
benefit each other in some
form.
SYCO Music
 One record label which is extremely well known, both inside the industry and
by the general public, is Syco Music. Syco Music is the music division of the
company Syco Entertainment, which was set up and owned by Simon Cowell,
who has subsequently created "one of the world’s leading global music,
television and film production companies". Many of the artists signed by the
record label are winners or contestants of the company's successful TV shows
Britain's Got Talent and The X Factor, including big names such as One
Direction, Fifth Harmony, Susan Boyle and Little Mix. Artists discovered by The
X Factor have sold more than 200 million records worldwide, including 200
No. 1s and 380 Top 10 records.
Pros Cons
• The first pro of this record label is how well it’s
known. The company is repeatedly advertised
annually to an extremely large audience and so our
artist would be more likely to get recognised by
more people.
• With the record label being so well-known, there is a
higher likelihood of more money being put into
selling an artist and their work.
• Mainly focuses on pop music, the record label may not
be capable of managing an indie-rock music artist as
well as an alternative record label with experience
would.
• The majority of the artist signed to this record label are
contestants of The X Factor or Britain’s Got Talent and
so it may be difficult to get signed by this company.
Virgin EMI Records
 Virgin EMI Records is a British record label that was founded in 2013 through
the merging of Mercury Records UK and Virgin Records.
 The label have many artists signed including Elton John, Kanye West and
Taylor Swift.
 The majority of the artists signed are pop artists, however there is the
occasional R n’ B artist such as Ne-Yo.
Pros Cons
• It’s a big record label company, and again this means
that there may be a higher budget to be spent on
selling our artist.
• They mostly sign pop artists, this could mean that
they have less experience managing an indie-rock
artist and therefore this may negatively impact our
band within the industry.
Fueled By Ramen
 Fueled By Ramen is a U.S.
based record label which
first opened in 1996. The
company’s main focus is on
punk-inspired rock/pop
bands and currently has 28
active artists signed; some
extremely well-known
worldwide such as Fall Out
Boy, Twenty One Pilots and
Panic! At The Disco.
 Many of the artists signed
have recent albums out, as
well as worldwide sold-out
tours.
Pros Cons
• The company has 20 years experience
in managing and marketing
indie/rock/pop artists and I believe
this would be extremely beneficial for
our band.
• The record label are also extremely
well-known, therefore this could get
our band recognition from that
particular audience.
• With so many artists already being
signed, it may be difficult to get
signed.
