3. Insomnia is a sleep disorder
in which you have trouble
falling and/or staying asleep.
The condition may short-
term (acute) or can last a
long time (chronic). It may
also come and go.
Acute insomnia lasts from 1
night to a few weeks.
Chronic insomnia happens at
least 3 nights a week for 3
month or more.
6. PRIMARY INSOMNIA
Sleep problems aren’t
linked to any other
health
condition/problems.
Causes:
Stressful events
Environmental factors
Jet lags
Trouble sleeping because
of a health
condition.(comorbid)
Causes:
Mental health issues
Medications for colds
Pain/discomfort
Caffeine,
nicotine/alcohol use
Endocrine problems
SECONDARY INSOMNIA
10. Behavioural insomnia in children:
It affects approximately
25% of children. BIC is
characterized by
children having
difficulty falling asleep
or maintaining sleep
leading to poor sleep
quality & duration.
11. BIC Sleep onset associations:
(infants & toddlers)
Negative associations
with sleep, such as go
to sleep by being
rocked.

Watching TV while
falling asleep
Buds
12. BIC Limit-setting:
Children challenge their
parents during bedtime
& refuse to go to sleep.
