• Every 5 - 10 years the consumer-oriented industry is disrupted by new wave of
technology
• The most recent ones were personal computing, internet and then mobile
revolutions: each one completely redefined multiple industries including
entertainment, shopping, personal productivity and more.

4 stages of evolution of manufacturing
• Manufacturing processes evolved in 4 dramatic steps:
1. mechanization (energy conversion, started with steam engine)
2. mass production (assembly line)
3. computer-aided automation (repetitive activities performed by robots)
4. AI-based autonomous manufacturing (intelligent robots able to learn and
respond to changing environment) - aka Industry 4.0
• Each stage of development introduced paradigm change: older manufacturing

Industry 4.0 - BigData
•BigData is increasingly large volume of data that is accumulated within computer
systems that can be used for operational or analytical purposes
•BigData is accumulated in real time, from multiple source and usually serves for
historical analysis.
•Raw BigData may not be useful and require complex processing and aggregation.
The resulting information can be made accessible via dashboards and can trigger
alerts and business rules.
•Information inferred from BigData can serve for optimization and prediction of
future: data models for capacity, malfunctions, revenues and much more.

•AI (Artificial Intelligence) - is apparently intelligent behaviour exhibited by
computers while solving problems that only humans were able to handle before.
•Machine Learning - the ability of computers to learn without being explicitly
programmed (preprogrammed set of rules)
•Machine Vision - the ability of computers to recognize objects and material
properties through analysis of still images or video
•Together, AI, Machine Learning and Machine Vision will allow Industry 4.0
manufacturing facilities to operate autonomously, through continuous adjustment
to changing environment factors and performance optimization.

•Blockchain - distributed and public repositories of data that are made resistant to
injection of fake data by means of decentralization and cryptography.
•Fully distributed, robust and transparent repository for multi-party environment.
•Solution for internal and external on-demand resource sharing.
•Smart contracts as a means to enforce obligation fulfillment between parties.
•Decentralized execution and control for critical processes with no single point of
failure.

manual tasks execution to decision making and innovation.

Industry 4.0 - Human-Machine Interfaces
•Today design, modeling and experimentation are made instant by means of
innovative visualization technologies:
•VR (Virtual Reality) - an immersive experience created entirely from computer-
generated content, it’s a “classic” virtual reality where the user only sees the
computer-generated visualisation
•AR (Augmented Reality) - is an overlay of content on the real world, but that content
is not anchored to any part of it and doesn’t interact with the real-world objects.
•MR (Mixed Reality) - is an overlay of synthetic content on the real world that is
anchored to and interacts with the real world: physical and digital objects co-exist and
interact in real time.
