Curricular Statement : Creating awareness of feelings, emotions and aspects of ourselves and others. 
Learning Outcome : The learner is, 
1) remembering the feelings of others while communicating 
2) understanding the concept of universal brotherhood 
3) applying the words like ‘zest,rage,scamp, panorama’ etc. in new situation 
4) analyzing the theme of the poem
5) evaluating the power of a ballad to express a story 
6) creating the empathy and purgation of emotions 
Content Analysis : Ideational Content 
The ballad ‘The Enchanted Shirt’ by John Hay expresses a story of a king who feels 
sick at the first part o the ballad. Physicians came there for identifies and cure kings 
disease. They fail in it and the king ordered to cut off their heads. At last one physician 
suggests a remedy to the king’s disease is that the king should sleep to wear with a shirt of a 
happy man one night. At last they found a man, a beggar who seems extreme happiness. But 
he didn’t have a shirt. King understands his problem and become an ideal ruler.

Classroom Interaction Procedure 
Pupils Response 
Informal Interaction 
Teacher creates mental readiness in pupil and she try to sustain 
the interest throughout the class. 
Entry Activity 
Teacher sings a vadakkanpaattu “Aattummanammealea 
Unniarcha….” and lead the pupils to the ballad. 
Link Talk 
Teacher divides the pupils into three groups based on their voting 
of love for story, poem and essay. Then the teacher shows photograph of the 
author and a chart about him, then teacher asks them to sit with their group 
and she provides each part of the ballad to each groups. And asks them to 
change that part into a screen play or a dramatized form. 
Procedure 
Pupils write the screen play and read it in the class room with the 
characters in front of the class by each groups.
Teacher makes corrections and asks them to sit in groups and enact the 
screen play in front of the class. 
Sharing and Understanding 
Teacher introduce new vocabulary items; 
1) Zest /zest/ – enthusiasm or eagerness 
Students should take every learning task with zest. 
2) Rage /red/ – uncontrollable anger 
Keerthi’s father turned red with rage on seeing her report card. 
3) Scamp /skæmp/ –a child who enjoys playing tricks and causing 
trouble 
Aswin finds pleasure by trickling his friends. 
4) Panorama /pænərmə/ – an impressive view of a wide area of 
land 
The cameraman captured the beauty of the panorama of his 
shots. 
Teacher gives gist of the whole ballad; 
The ballad ‘The Enchanted Shirt’ by John Hay expresses a story 
of a king who felt sick at the first part of the poem. But his eyes were clear 
and cheeks were red in colour. So physicians came there to find out the 
sickness of the king. One who says the king was fine, their heads were cut
off. At last two physicians came. From them one prescribe a remedy to the 
kings disease that the king should wear the shirt of a happy man and sleep 
one night with it. So the spies search out for such a man’s shirt. After weeks 
they met a beggar who was seemed to be very happy. The spies ask his shirt 
for loan, but the man replies he has no shirt. With these days result, king’s 
eyes were opened and understand all the matters around him and become an 
ideal king. 
Scaffolded Reading 
Teacher asks some scaffolding questions to the students: 
1) Who is the author of the ballad? 
2) What is the problem of the king? 
3) Is the king really sick? 
4) At last what medicine prescribed by the idle physician? 
5) Where the two couriers met the beggar? 
6) How the beggar expressed his happiness? 
7) How much money offer by the couriers to the beggar for his shirt for 
loan? 
8) What is the reply of the beggar when the spies ask his shirt? 
9) Who was ashamed of his useless life? 
10) Whose maladies hatched in gloom?
11) Whom the people blessed at last? Why? 
Loud Reading 
Teacher asks some pupils to read the poem loudly in front of the class. 
Follow – up Activity 
Write a story on the basis of this ballad ‘The Enchanted Shirt’.

  • 2. 5) evaluating the power of a ballad to express a story 6) creating the empathy and purgation of emotions Content Analysis : Ideational Content The ballad ‘The Enchanted Shirt’ by John Hay expresses a story of a king who feels sick at the first part o the ballad. Physicians came there for identifies and cure kings disease. They fail in it and the king ordered to cut off their heads. At last one physician suggests a remedy to the king’s disease is that the king should sleep to wear with a shirt of a happy man one night. At last they found a man, a beggar who seems extreme happiness. But he didn’t have a shirt. King understands his problem and become an ideal ruler.   • 4. Classroom Interaction Procedure Pupils Response Informal Interaction Teacher creates mental readiness in pupil and she try to sustain the interest throughout the class. Entry Activity Teacher sings a vadakkanpaattu “Aattummanammealea Unniarcha….” and lead the pupils to the ballad. Link Talk Teacher divides the pupils into three groups based on their voting of love for story, poem and essay. Then the teacher shows photograph of the author and a chart about him, then teacher asks them to sit with their group and she provides each part of the ballad to each groups. And asks them to change that part into a screen play or a dramatized form. Procedure Pupils write the screen play and read it in the class room with the characters in front of the class by each groups.
  • 5. Teacher makes corrections and asks them to sit in groups and enact the screen play in front of the class. Sharing and Understanding Teacher introduce new vocabulary items; 1) Zest /zest/ – enthusiasm or eagerness Students should take every learning task with zest. 2) Rage /red/ – uncontrollable anger Keerthi’s father turned red with rage on seeing her report card. 3) Scamp /skæmp/ –a child who enjoys playing tricks and causing trouble Aswin finds pleasure by trickling his friends. 4) Panorama /pænərmə/ – an impressive view of a wide area of land The cameraman captured the beauty of the panorama of his shots. So the spies search out for such a man’s shirt. After weeks they met a beggar who was seemed to be very happy. The spies ask his shirt for loan, but the man replies he has no shirt. With these days result, king’s eyes were opened and understand all the matters around him and become an ideal king. Scaffolded Reading Teacher asks some scaffolding questions to the students: 1) Who is the author of the ballad? 2) What is the problem of the king? 3) Is the king really sick? 4) At last what medicine prescribed by the idle physician? 5) Where the two couriers met the beggar? 6) How the beggar expressed his happiness? 7) How much money offer by the couriers to the beggar for his shirt for loan? 8) What is the reply of the beggar when the spies ask his shirt? 9) Who was ashamed of his useless life? 10) Whose maladies hatched in gloom?
  • 7. 11) Whom the people blessed at last? Why? Loud Reading Teacher asks some pupils to read the poem loudly in front of the class. Follow – up Activity Write a story on the basis of this ballad ‘The Enchanted Shirt’.
