Introduction of the poem:
Even Past Fifty is a poem by Shanta Shelke who portrays a woman who faces the
hardships of life with a smiling face and a cheerful hearts. Here the woman fails to realize the
passage of time.
Pre-requisite knowledge:
The learner:
knows the hard work of mother in their upbringing
has experienced the love and care of mother.
Teaching learning resources: Course book, source book, dictionary, picture, chart, video, etc.
Phase: 1
Friendly interaction with the learner: Teacher interacts friendly with the learners and makes
them cool and energetic.
Time to think: Then the teacher shows some pictures of great women and asks the learners to
identify them. Then the teacher asks about the common working class women in their locality
and also their problems. Now the teacher gives some questions to think and evaluate the life of
women in our society. 1. Do women have more hands than men? 2. Why do they have to work
so hard always? 3. Have you ever thought about it? Now we are going to read a poem based on
all those women who have dedicated their lives to make their dear ones happy.
Phase: 2
Shall we go though the life of the author? The teacher gives a small description about the author
Shanta Shelke on a chart. Shall we start the poem? The teacher reads the poem twice with
correct rhythm and musicality. Now the teacher again reads the poem and asks the learners to
ask read the poem with her aloud.
Silent reading by the learner: The teacher asks the students to read the poem carefully.
Discussion session: The teacher asks the learners to discuss their views with their peer group. If
they have any doubt the teacher megaphones them.
Identify the meaning of the difficult words:
 Childhood: the state of being a child.
Then the teacher shows the picture of childhood and a video of the childhood game.
Phase: 3
Interpretation of the poem: The teacher explains the idea of the poem and also explains the
interpretation of each line.
Testing the learners: Now the teacher asks some questions to the learners about the stanza. 1.
Who is the speaker in the poem? 2. Who is the ‘she ‘in the poem? 3. Who is the author of the
poem?
Loud reading of the learner: It is the time for reading the poem aloud by the learner. Now the
teacher helps them to read the poem correctly.
Phase 4 :
Identification of figures of speech: Teacher asks the students to find out the figure of speech that
used in the poem. Teacher explains the figure speech correctly to the learners.
Group Activity: The teacher asks the learners to sit in groups and find out the contrasts used in
the poem.
Review: Love and hard work of women was emphasized. Home work: Write a paragraph of
your mother’s activities during the course of a day.
