- Establish identity and credibility on subject: Explain that you are from the ELC and the presentation is co-created between the Experiential Learning Center and Career Center. ELC focuses on Internships and Undergraduate Research and Career Center focuses on deciding a Major and Full-time professional positions. And both offices serve students with professional and career develop and therefore have overlapping and highly integrated services including but not limited to career counseling/coaching, internship and undergraduate research advising, resumes, cover letters, interviewing preparation, and, of course, support with our topic today, Informational Interviewing! Upcoming, we’ll be discussing the definition of Informational Interviewing – some students may have heard of this, some never, so good starting point. Discuss that this presentation will set them up to be prepared for and ready to start the Informational Interview assignment. Informational Interviews are incredibly helpful for all individuals and particularly students as you are deciding and learning about different career fields and majors. We’ll be discussing why/how informational interviews are helpful to you.
- Connecting to the reading from College Rules! Textbook: statistics: 75% of entering freshmen uncertain of major (chapter 4, p 43) Career Versus Major: Major does not equal choosing a career. The same applied to obtaining your degree and that it does not equal being handed a job: Review Career Briefs sheets from Career Center that show the various job titles associated with the majors – example, Architecture does not equal that you will be an Architect, could be an Urban Planner. Ask students ideas and examples of other job titles they think are associated with that major. Connecting with the reading – important realities to reflect and observe in yourself – ask are you love with the “idea” of a major? Do quick RIASEC (self-assess) in class with image Introduction of handout from Career Center (Personality, Interests, Values, and Skills) and that the RIASEC self-assessment is ONLY facilitating a surface level assessment of your interests – (RIASEC p. 49) More in-depth and additional assessments of not only interests (Strong Interest Inventory) but also values, skills/aptitudes, and personality (MBTI for example) are available at the Career Center.
- Definition of Informational Interviewing (adapted/taken from Informational Interviewing Handout): Informational interviews are conversations with particular individuals about their work in the academic programs, professional jobs, or companies/organizations in which you are interested. Informational interviews are a good way to obtain career-related information and can be one of the most valuable sources of occupational information because it presents opportunities for an intimate and flexible inside view of a job field unmatched by other resources. How the informational interview assignment can help the student (adapted/taken from Informational Interviewing Handout, Purpose): Get the inside picture of a company/organization/firm and see first-hand what the environment of that employer is like. Meet possible mentor(s) and start to develop contacts and build relationships with people in your career field, aka network. Discover possible hidden job markets. Gain experience and self-confidence to present yourself more effectively. Look at Informational Interview Brochure all together and briefly review/go-over the brochure just mentioning each of the sections. Next, and similarly, look at Networking Brochure all together explaining why (because of similarities to what they are accomplishing with Informational Interviews) and showing students the parallels briefly reviewing/going-over the brochure just mentioning each of the sections. Break-up into dyads and practice the sample script of verbally introducing yourself, 1 individual acting as student, the other the employer, then switch and practice again, and then switch and practice asking questions while identifying some that you would really like to ask a in the meeting with the employer.
