- Thank you Paul, and thank you Conrad for giving me the honor of presenting this introduction to the digital transformation of the health sector. It is a tough act to follow the excellent presentations and discussions yesterday, especially as they covered a large part of the talk I had prepared leading to a rewrite last night.
- Probably the single biggest driver of this change has been the dramatic rise in computing power. In 1995 the leading US academic computing center, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois, was the proud owner of several supercomputers, the most powerful being shown here. As you can see it is pretty big.
- In terms of pure computing power, however, it would take about 120 of them to match the smartphone most of you have in your pocket. At the other end of the spectrum today’s supercomputers are almost unbelievably powerful.
- With the increase in power and decrease in cost of computing has come an equally dramatic change in connectivity and the speed of networks. One of the side effects of these changes has been cloud computing – the ability for anyone to access networks of servers across the internet. But cloud computing is not restricted to basic servers for running websites and storing data.
- Over the past few years more and more powerful computers have been made available. It is now possible for anyone with an internet connection to use a virtual supercomputer that would be considered one of the world’s fastest if it were at a center like NCSA. Some of these cloud supercomputers are even secure enough to meet regulatory requirements for personal health information. With easy access to resources like these we should now consider computing to be unlimited for our purposes.
