Influence Of Media On Teenagers
Today, teenagers like us are rarely alone. We are under pressure to be online and available at all
times, talking, messaging, liking, commenting, sharing, posting – it never ends. Never before have
we been so connected, so continuously, so instantaneously, so young. There's simply no privacy, and
the social pressures that go along with that are relentless. This always–on environment is training us
to value ourselves based on the number of likes we get and the types of comments that we receive.
There's no separation between online and offline life. What's real or what isn't is really hard to tell
the difference between. Every day we approximately spend 8 hours exposed to different forms of
media. It keeps us entertained, informed, and opinionated. Media influences us through news,
headlines and information we see online, on TV and radio. It creeps into our daily lives set lean
subconsciously through magazines and advertisements that create and recreate standards of success,
beauty and living. Our brain processes all these sets information from a variety of sources and
sometimes, we no longer wonder whether the information is the truth or not, but rather just believe it
right away. We react to it right away. We no longer are watchful with what enters our minds. We no
longer think twice before we respond. We no longer identify ourselves from what influences us. Yes,
media brings people together. It can make us laugh, think, consider, and can make us feel right. But
if we're

Flannery O ' Connor 's Revelation
Flannery O'Connor believed in the power of religion to give new purpose to life. She saw the fall of
the old world, felt the force and presence of God, and her allegorical fictions often portray
characters who discover themselves transforming to the Catholic mind. Though her literature does
not preach, she uses subtle, thematic undertones and it is apparent that as her characters struggle
through violence and pain, divine grace is thrown at them. In her story "Revelation," the protagonist,
Mrs. Turpin, acts sanctimoniously, but ironically the virtue that gives her eminence is what brings
about her downfall. Mrs. Turpin's veneer of so called good behavior fails to fill the void that would
bring her to heaven. Grace hits her with force and their illusions, causing a traumatic collapse
exposing the emptiness of her philosophy. As Flannery O'Connor said, "In Good Fiction, certain of
the details will tend to accumulate meaning from the action of the story itself, and when this
happens they become symbolic in the way they work." (487). The significance is not in the plot or
the actual events, but rather the meaning is between the lines. In Flannery O'Connor's short story
"Revelation," the dynamic character of Mrs. Turpin serves as an ideal lens to examine humanity; the
transformation from a woman of hypocrisy to a woman of grace is crucial to understanding the
theme. Mrs. Turpin thinks very highly of herself, is satisfied with her place in the world and
classifies all others

Poem "Lucifer in the Starlight": New Meanings and Ideas
Poem "Lucifer in the Starlight": New Meanings and Ideas Examining a poem in detail can bring out
new meanings and ideas. By careful analysis, the full beauty of the poem can be appreciated. The
poem "Lucifer in Starlight (p. 959)", by George Meredith, can be analyzed to refine the authors
purpose, by examining every subtle hint, every possibility, for a deeper theme. Also, "deciphering"
formal literary techniques such as metaphor, connotation, and symbolism is the key to unlock other
expressions. The main theme of the poem is that Lucifer has no place out of his hell, and anything
he tries to reenter heaven is futile. As with any poem, it is best to first examine how the title,
"Lucifer in Starlight" relates to the body of the poem. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Perhaps this is because Meredith is trying to show Lucifer's domination. Also the poem follows the
sonnet's form of fourteen lines, but there are not quatrains. Instead there Are sections of 5, 5, 2, and
a final couplet. By deviated from the standard, Meredith creates a brilliant work of art. In this
exceptional work, Meredith shows the menace of the devil, and then his helplessness against god.
The devil has only one home, which is hell, and Meredith proves that. Meredith combines irony,
with his own distinctive style and tone, to portray the ordeal quite realistically. By the caliber of
Meredith's writing, this poem is worthy for more than just a place in a English

Meaning Mishaps and the Nature of Art Essay
Have you ever been confused about the purpose or meaning behind a certain piece of art? In my
opinion, art is viewed many different ways. The artist will create a piece of art with a certain
intended meaning, but it will most likely not be viewed in that way. When a spectator views a piece
of art, they take into account their past experiences, and since everyone has gone through different
things, their interpretations are different, as you can imagine. The nature of art is created when the
artist intends one thing, but the spectator sees the art differently; and therefore changes the meaning
when they spread their personal opinions.
Pop culture has always played a very strong role in society. However, with all the advancements and

Even though most of them have a Facebook too, they don't approve of them for their teens. They
hear scary stories that have to do with Facebook, and most mainly fear that their teens aren't going
to be safe. However, another major problem is that they are putting their friends before
responsibilities. This may cause outrage in some parents. They may seem strict, but really, they are
just looking out for what they think is best. This is why most parents are strongly Anti–Facebook. In
the end, it all comes down to one major group that contributes to the ideas of both views, and this is
society in itself. Basically everywhere you look; there is something that, in some way or another, has
to do with Facebook. Whether it is advertising or a kidnapping, it's always seen differently when
discussed with the two different groups. Mark Zuckerberg is the creator of Facebook. When he first
created Facebook, it was used at his college as a mini way to communicate. It later spread to
neighboring colleges. Now, it is one of the most popular forms of communication today. He
definitely didn't create Facebook to be used as a source to target people, or as an excuse to get out of
responsibilities. He really didn't want any of this to happen, but because it does, people
automatically blame him. This is totally the opposite effect that he intended. "[Facebook's] whole

Literary Analysis Of Aftermath On Blackboard By Longfellow
This poem was interesting because it so short and everyone can relate to it. The speaker of this poem
eats the plums someone else was saving. The speaker never says who he/she was talking to, which
makes me question who the speaker was talking to. He/she could be talking to his/her spouse,
significant other, friend, etc. Also the plums could be a metaphor, sweet, delicious, fresh, for sexual
activity, temptation, or love.
Aftermath on Blackboard
This poem is about how bare the land is after it being harvest, hence the title Aftermath. Longfellow
wrote this poem focusing on nature and the changing of the seasons, summer to winter. He describes
summer as having "sweet, new grass with flowers" while the winter has "tangled tufts from marsh."
Grass on Blackboard This poem is about how nature, grass growing, has to restore itself and cover
up the destruction that the humans left. The speaker lists the battlefields to show how nature covers
up a disaster the humans made. Humans usually forget that the battles actually happen and they end
up forgetting about it, then it keeps happening after that.
Upon Julia's Clothes on Blackboard This poem describes how Julia has fancy taste in clothes and
how the speaker likes how Julia looks in them. The reader learns nothing about Julia, including what
she is wearing. The only thing readers know about Julia is how she looks in silk, describing how it
"flows", its "liquefaction", its "vibration," and its "glittering."

The True Meaning Of Reading Is Not A Disinterested...
For many years authorial intention was recognised as the only true meaning of a text. A philosopher
in the twentieth century, Edmund Hursell, recognised the power of consciousness and the
phenomenal reality of an appearance which defers questions about an ultimate end. Phenomenology
notes an objects existence, but achieves meaning and finds reality through an active conscious and
awareness which registers the object, suspending all presuppositions, inferences, or judgements. A
text, when criticised phenomenologically, is seen in aesthetic and affective aspects, existing only in
the reader. Scholar Stanley Fish extended these ideas into what is now called Reader–Response
Criticism, or R–RC discussing the influence the reader has on the interpretation, making "reading an
active activity" (Cowgill 5). This essay will discuss the idea that reading is not a disinterested
activity by applying new critic ideals to enforce upon the notion that meaning is drawn from the
readers own interpretations, shaped by their active engagement with the text.. More recently, in
2003, Lisa Zunshine further developed the importance of the reader in textual meaning by drawing
from cognitive psychology in her article 'Theory of the Mind'. Zunshine suggests that such an
activity is the basis for the very existence of the novel as we know it; the reason we read fiction is
because it exercises our mind–reading ability (Polvinen). Readers become active participants in the
creation of the work through

CHARACTERS –
The main character throughout most of the book is "Verity", or Julie. She is actually telling the story
of Maddie, however, although her presence seems to still be main focus throughout the story.
Halfway through the book, however, it switched to Maddie's point of view, or "Kittyhawk". With
both of the girls, you can see the changes in them. They both develop greatly and you can see it
through them by just looking at what they are afraid of. It mentions once in the story that Julie once
said that she was afraid of growing old, and then she say's later that she could eat her words: she is
now afraid of never growing old. "But mainly so very, very stupid. I desperately want to grow old"

hopes of buying herself time to live, and by doing that she is telling the story of her best friend

to do is cough up everything I can remember about the British War Effort." (4). While the story is

The Influence Of Lying In High School
Two days after a big math test, I was sitting in my usual seat in the back of the class while our
teacher was handing back our test grades. Because I was in the back of the class, I got my grade last.
The time it took the teacher to arrive to the last row felt like the waiting line at the airport; the time
just stopped. My mind drifted while I thought about what I got on the test. I had studied hard for that
test, but I was not sure if I performed well enough for a high grade. My test sliding onto my table
snapped me back to reality. When I looked at it, I felt relieved. Written in red stood "98/100," but
when I saw the comment beside, my smile left my face. He had commented one word: "Fine." I
could not understand why. Was he not pleased with me? I have always thought that fine meant, you
did all right, just okay, or not too bad. After class, I approached the teacher and asked him why he
was not pleased with my grade. He looked at me, surprised, and said, "What do you mean? I was

Probably the most common lie that people in their lifetime is, "I am fine." Three weeks ago, I got I
call from my parents, and got the news that my grandmother had been diagnosed with lung cancer.
My grandmother has always taken care of herself. She does not smoke, and goes hiking nearly
without sweating. I felt devastated that I was at least thirty hours away from home with no way of
getting home in time if something serious was to happen quickly. The next couple of days, I did not
act as myself. My friends noticed that I did not smile as much as usual and asked what was going on
with me. The easy way out, without telling them the truth, was just saying "I am fine," and try to
fake a smile. Telling them I was just feeling more homesick than usual. People often use "I am fine"
so they do not have to go into details about what is bothering them. Usually this means they are

Extraordinary Meaning In The Mercy By Orhan Pamuk
Ordinary Objects, Extraordinary meaning
"Man's sentimental attachment to object is one of life's greatest consolations." by Orhan Pamuk
explains how objects with emotional meanings can often provide comfort to an individual during
difficult times. This ties in with the poem The Mercy by Philip Levine in multiple ways, in which
the most significant one would be how an orange became such a symbolic item to the author's
mother through a series of events. There's always some things that we would never give away, and
perhaps the worth would only increase with time. An ordinary object can have influential and
precious meanings that worth much over its monetary value depending on the individual and the
memories generated from this tangible possession.
The Mercy has shown a lot of morals and insights towards life that I deeply agree in accordance
with Philip Levine. Starting with the poem's title "The Mercy", it has given me wonders about what
mercy as a noun could possibly mean. Thankfulness? Benevolence? However, when the "orange"
was introduced, my doubts were answered immediately due to the fact that "...a young Scot... taught
her the word... patiently over and over again". Being patient enough to teach someone such an easy
word demonstrates kindness in both accepting foreigners who hasn't encountered such things and
showing lenience. The orange embodies the Scot's mercy and metaphorically, a symbol of comfort
during the girl's uneasy trip to the US. But it only had its meanings beyond just a citrus fruit from
the fact that she chose to accept it and taste the sweet juice. Or the compassion of human nature.
During her "long autumn voyage" she has experienced tragic events including a smallpox outbreak,
but how she managed to survive could have been almost impossible without the psychological
support that she has received from the young Scot earlier, through a physical orange. Her
unforgettable experience on "The Mercy" impacted her maturity and would continue to influence
her worldviews. Through this bittersweet journey, she was taught with having hope and enjoying
and cherishing the little things. Like an orange.

Persuasive Speech On Gay Jail

some reblogs, little did they know it kickstarted a phenomenon. The term gay baby jail is the perfect
combination of words to convey that one is worthy of punishment for their immature actions while
communicating that it is all in good jest. It is truly an iconic statement that has withstood the sands

The Year Of Magical Thinking By Joan Didion
The question that we aimed to answer as a class was: what do women want? The class focused on
themes such as desire, family, community safety, and even more, but I feel that the theme that really
appeared in all of the books and films that we studies was the idea of meaningful work. This is one
of the most important things that women want, or that anyone wants, because it is doing something
on a daily basis that means something to you and means something to somebody else. Meaningful
work presented itself initially in The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion when she discusses
in both the play and the memoir the way that she has created an identity as a writer, as well as the
way that she bonded with her husband through their joint identity as authors. It is also clear in the
memoir that she is writing it in order to understand what she was going through and it is the most
important way that she can cope with the horrific experience. Writing is meaningful work not only
because she can share her craft and her experience to help others, but it her work that makes her who
she is. In More of This World or Maybe Another, we see all of the characters come to and converge
in a small laundromat. This is the point of connection for all of the characters, and it is owned and
run by one of the primary characters. She pours her heart and soul into the laundromat, and she not
only makes it a success, but she makes a place of safety for the people in her community. She works

Meaning Of Happiness In Brave New World
The true meaning of happiness is different for everyone. For most people, it is feeling satisfied with
every aspect of their life. The society of Brave New World does not know the true meaning of
happiness because they have never had any form of true conflict show up their lives. When trouble
comes up in their life, they avoid fixing it by taking soma. By taking soma, they base their happiness
off a fake reality, therefore, it creates no true relief. Not having any form of conflict in their life
creates a problem within itself because then they never get to experience true joy. People of the
World State have no feelings because they were conditioned from birth to not value or worry about
anything. In the scene when Lenina was telling Fanny that she was not comfortable with
promiscuity, Fanny deemphasized Lenina's feelings and told her it was wrong to have sentimental
value towards one another: " Everybody belongs to everyone else."(Huxley 43). In other words,
Fanny told Lenina that she does not need to value anyone, nor does anyone need to value her. The
government has established that having feelings towards another person causes social instability.

Teaching New Meanings For The Sorority Environment
"You quickly become what you surround yourself with." This concept was a constant reminder my
mother gave me when I moved off to college. As a senior, I find this advice to hold very true when I
reflect on the organizations that I have been a part of. My sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha, has had the
biggest influence on not only my character, but my language as well. What first seemed like jargon
has now become primary language. From learning new meanings for everyday vocabulary to
different intonational patterns, my language has adapted to the environment that I have surrounded
myself with for the past three years. Within a sorority, there are various terms that are held secret
due to our ritual ceremonies; however, there are also numerous terms that we will use in everyday
language. These terms are average words that are used throughout the day by a vast majority of the
world population. However, when the words are used in the sorority environment, they take on a
completely new meaning. In other words, they are semantically altered. A primary example is the
transition of the words big and little from adjectives to proper nouns. Instead of defining an object's
size, these terms are now used to name your big and little sister in the sorority. I remember getting
asked my freshman year, "Are you going to rush?" I immediately thought, "Rush where?" As I
transitioned into the Greek community, I quickly realized that the term rush changes meaning and
now means going through sorority or

Joan Didion's on Going Home- Analysis Essay
In Joan Didion's essay, "On Going Home" Didion describes her experiences and thoughts on what
defines her meaning of home. Didion uses many asyndetons and polysyndetons to emphasize her
emotions and poses several rhetorical questions. Throughout the essay, Didion poses an important
point that, perhaps her generation is the last to truly know the meaning behind the word "home". The
contributing factors to such conclusion derived from her personal experiences with her direct family
(mother, father, and brother), her husband, and even her own daughter. Didion first sets her
definition of home by clarifying that to her, home means "not where [her] husband and [she] and the

Schools Have A New Meaning On Sexism And Double Standards
Schools have put a new meaning on sexism and double standards. An example of this is having
double standards and sexism towards the dress codes. Students who have families well known or the
student is well liked by the teachers, do not receive the same punishment for breaking the dress code
as an ordinary student. This demonstrates that schools are not fair in setting rules for dress codes.
Particular students are allowed to wear certain clothing, whereas other students are punished for
wearing similar clothing. Schools have double standards as to what is appropriate and what appears
to be revealing and how the following student should be punished. Maggie Sunseri produced a video
that led to a change in her school 's dress code exemplifying why schools should be equal, unbiased,
and unsexist when setting and enforcing the dress codes.
Schools have dress codes that are biased and gender specific towards women. For example, if a male
student were to break dress code they would be told to fix the problem; however, a female student
would have more serious consequences. Female students would have a call to parents for a change
of clothing or would be sent home because administrators find this to be a distraction to the male
students. School administrators do not see the effect the unjust, biased school dress codes have on
the female students. The dress codes cause students to feel self–conscious, and Maggie Sunseri, a
student from Woodford High, has been a victim of dress code

Literary Analysis Of The Thing In The Forest
The literary device that is going to be used to pair up with the primary context is Symbolism. In the
Story The Thing in the Forest, there is plenty of symbolism in this short story. The whole story is
essentially a symbol. There are plenty of objects in this story that have a very different meaning,
referencing to the time period in the piece of literature. In The Thing in the Forest there is a great
deal of symbolism. For example the whole story is a symbol for the war going on at that time,
WWII. In the story it talks about how the girls and a number of other children went on a train to
escape the cities that were most likely being hit hard by the war. There are two girls that have plenty
of different meanings to them that can mean so many things, the house that they were at for a while,
and of course the "thing" that also has many meanings to it.
In The Thing in the Forest, let's start off with the beginning of the story. In the second paragraph it
talks about Penny and Primrose, the main characters in the story. It describes the girls very precisely,
"Penny was thin and dark and taller, possibly older, than Primrose, who was plump and blond and
curly. Primrose had bitten nails, and velvet collar on her dressy green coat. Penny had a bloodless
transparent paleness, a touch of blue in her fine lips." (Byatt 325). The symbolism in this sentence
can mean that Penny had an imaginary friend, which was Primrose, that possibly died. We can infer
this because the author

Semiotics, Authorship and Viewers are all producers of meaning. These critical terms/parts of visual
culture are important in understanding the signs of the particular cultural context. Semiotics is a
critical part that provides important tools for understanding meaning of things. These mediums
include images, film and television among others. These mediums can all be decoded in a variety of
ways. Also, to understand meaning it is important to understand the signifier and the signified.
Lastly, semiotics is the central understanding of culture as a signifying practice. This is the work of
creating and interpreting meaning on a daily basis in a given culture.
2. Looking is active. Looking involves relationships of power, i.e. spectatorship /the gaze/ power
and visual knowledge. What is meant by this and what is an example?
Looking at a particular image is an active process and this was certainly proved in the text.
Furthermore, looking involves different relationships of power. Spectatorship provides a deeper
understanding of looking. This process is enacted in most interactive, multimodal, and relational
fields. To understand spectatorship, it is important to understand the concept of the gaze. Different
visual theorists to emphasize the embeddedness of the gaze have used the term the gaze in specific
ways. The term gaze is to enter into a relational activity of looking. The concept of the gaze plays a
central role in theories of spectatorship in modernity. The concepts of

Comparing Brave New World And Man's Search For Meaning
The stories of Frankl, Mustapha Mond, and Ivan share several similarities and differences. In Viktor
E. Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning, he tells us that finding the meaning of life is finding our
happiness and we must not avoid bad situations. A short story called "Brave New World" by Aldous
Huxley, Mustapha Mond is one of the ten controllers of World State. In this story we learn that
people in a World State are brainwashed to accept what they are given and told to do, and by that
keeps them stable and happy. Another short story is "Gooseberries" by Anton Chekhov where we are
introduced to a character, Ivan, who believes people like his brother, Nikolai, repress their emotions
in order to remain happy. Frankl and Mustapha Mond both believe in happiness, disagree on
whether or not there should be distance from reality, and Frankl also disagrees with Ivan on how
suffering should not be ignored. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From Frankl's book, Man's Search for Meaning, Frankl believes finding life's meaning is the key to
happiness. The second part of the book, Frankl says, "According to logotherapy, this starving to find
a meaning in one's life is the primary motivational force in man"(Frankl 98). This means a man who
wants and needs happiness will have the motive to find one's meaning of life. In the story called
Brave New World, Mustapha Mond believes stabilization will help control your emotions, he says,
"stability. No civilization without social stability. No social stability without individual stability"
(Huxley 9). Without the individual stability can not be social because one's emotions are not stable
to handle another type of emotion with someone else. Mustapha Mond believes having individual

Lord Of The Flies Symbolism Analysis
The symbols in the Lord of the Flies all change meaning throughout the novel. As the boys change
and develop, the symbols change with them. Some may become more positive or more negative and
some may change meaning completely. Ralph, Piggy, and Jack all adjust to being stranded on the
island differently and therefore react to and treat the objects on the island differently. With Jack's
development into savagery throughout the novel, his carelessness is evident in his lack of
acknowledgement of symbols that are important to Ralph and Piggy who look at this experience
more logically and optimistically. One symbol that changed dramatically throughout the novel is the
fire. The fire in the Lord of the Flies is introduced as a symbol for hope, develops into destruction
and is finalized as a representation of salvation.
In the beginning of the Lord of the Flies, the fire is used as a form of hope for rescue and survival.
When the boys first arrive on the island, Ralph decides that rescue should be their main focus. The
boys build a signal fire to attract any passing ships. He puts Jack and his hunters in charge of
keeping the fire going. One day the hunters let the fire burn out. When a ship passes without seeing
the fire, Ralph panics because they have lost a chance at being rescued. Golding describes the
aftermath of the ship passing, "The fire was out, smokeless and dead; the watchers were gone. A pile
of unused fuel lay ready" (Golding 68). When this incident occurs, Ralph

The New Meaning Of Airline Packing
The New Meaning to Airline Packing
Before 9/11 when Americans boarded an airplane, the only worry that crossed their minds could
have been hijackers holding the airplane, the crew, and the passengers for some kind of ransom, or
something going wrong with the airplane itself. After 9/11, we are now seeing a new kind of
hijacker; terrorists who use the airplanes themselves as weapons against the people they hate. They
run the airplanes into buildings to kill as many people they can with one attempt. This paper will
take a look at what the government did in the days after 9/11 to put into place a defense against
terrorists.

by Congress the airline Jet Blue had these requirements in every airplane they own. Putting crew
and passengers safety before their profit. This act also gave to the Under Secretary of Transportation
the job recruiting, training, and providing weapons for air marshals for each flight. As an elite group,
highly trained, the air marshals will set with the passengers and have the advantage of knowing what
is going on inside the cabin at all times.
Carol Hallett, head of the Airline Transportation Association said "The wisest investment in
improving security is hiring more air marshals because they are highly trained to provide
professional protection." (Renna, 2003)
This protection is costing the airlines approximately $3,000 per air marshal, per flight. Requiring
two air marshals in each plane.
Part of the Aviation and Transportation Security Act gave the Under Secretary of Transportation the
job to recruit, train, and air pilots using similar training programs that were used for air marshals.
The program for the pilots is done on a volunteer basis program only. In

O'Connor is careful to be vague and creates an ambiguous atmosphere so the reader has no option
other than to perpetuate the stereotype. Her descriptions of people as "dirty," "ugly," "white–trash,"
and "nigger" demonstrates her prejudice. Though this Southern Christian white woman is
superficially pleasant and well–mannered, she conceals her ugly thoughts of class stratum cognizant
of what is below her pedestal. A church going woman who treats slaves fairly, she believes her time
volunteered and philosophy of doing things for others are enough to sanctify her ugliness on the
inside. The omniscient narrator observes that "Mrs. Turpin felt at awful pity... it was one thing to be
ugly and another to act ugly" (473) Ironically, Mrs. Turpin is the one who acts ugly. Arrogant about
her station in life, when faced to choose between "a nigger or white–trash" she would plead with
Jesus to "let [her] wait until there's another place available" (472). Silently judging others she is
pleased to not be anything less socially acceptable than she already is, and often occupies herself at
night classifying people. Mrs. Turpin believed that you "had to have certain things before you could
know certain things;" this consequently places her on a higher plane (474). A normal day in the
waiting room leads to an unforeseen altercation, and ultimately an epiphany for Mrs. Turpin. A
character named Mary Grace seems estranged from both her mother

Arnold Friend Allusion
"Where Are You Going? Where Have You Been," is a testament of a true artist, because art can be
interpreted into many forms and meanings. These meanings can differ from person to person, such
as each reader of this tale can walk away with a different understanding of what the deeper
implication may be. With the element of religious metaphors and allusions, the author is able to
connect her short story to a much deeper value that pertains to today's society and it's current
relations with religion.
Within "Where Are You Going? Where Have You Been?" it is prevalent that Connie's family is not
religious. Through subtle hints such as the family barbecue that takes place on a Sunday, Oates
intentionally tells the reader of the household's religious status or lack thereof. Since there is not a
religious central influence on Connie, she has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since she does not seem to idolize her parents and respect them in any form, she finds another
person to admire and dedicate her time to. By Connie claiming that the "drive–in restaurant where
the older kids hung out," (Oates) is her form of church, the reader develops a sense of what is
important to Connie at this time in her life. A biblical allusion could be made between the
confrontation of Arnold Friend and Connie. Arnold Friend and his charismatic attempt to persuade
Connie to get out of her house and "come for a ride" (Oates) in his car with him could be interpreted
as Eve and the serpent that tempts her to eat the forbidden apple. Just as the serpent exclaimed, "For
God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as
gods, knowing good and evil," Arnold Friend attempted to persuade Connie to do as he desired.
(Genesis) By including all of these religious contexts in a story about a supposedly non–religious
family, the reader can decipher that Oates story was meant to encase a deeper

Graduation Speech : My Goals
After completing this journal, I realized that my well being is reflected upon my occupations. Just a
year ago, I recall how I spent majority of my time studying to get that 4.0 GPA for medical school.
To obtain that goal, I did not engage in any creative or fun occupations that would make me smile.
The only thing on my mind was to study from morning to midnight. That whole year, I was
miserable as I failed to accomplish my goal. To make matter worse, my grandparents passed away,
adding more stress. During that time, I did not know how to best respond to my situation. I thought
studying hard was enough, but I did not realize others factors can prevent me from accomplishing
my goals. After finishing this journal, I have realized how much I have change by engaging in
meaningful occupations, sticking to new theme of meaning, and developing better habits. Earlier in
the semester when I was filling the first few pages of this journal, I am reminded that I am still a
failure with a 3.22 GPA. As a result, I hated the question that asked me to recall a time when I was
unhealthy and a time that I was healthy. I also hated the question that ask me record my mental
thoughts for a day because most of them were negative. Since this question was answered earlier in
the semester, I seem to portray myself as a very insecure stressed out college student. Most of my
thoughts seem like a cry for help because I did not have good control of my life.
I do understand this journal

Learning Receptive Language Skills By Using An Authentic Text
Reading is a complex cognitive process of decoding symbols in order to construct or derive meaning
(reading comprehension). www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reading The aim of the assignment is to practice
receptive language skills by using an authentic text. I have choose an advert to discuss the
importance of donation to schools for breakfast for young students. I obtained it from
www.magicbreakfast.com website. I am confident about the text that it would be ideal for visual
learners as it comprises with an image . I'm teaching Entry 1 , and is a well blend of diversity.
Learners are from Bangladesh, Italy, Romania and Sudan. Learners have good receptive skills and
always welcome new ideas toward their learning. Their positive approach is an asset towards my
teaching, and I felt the advert would–be appropriate. The advert gives the message to donate for the
good cause and is not culturally biased. The element of personalisation from learners aspect would
help them to engage in the reading effectively, hence allowing a productive session to occur.
The text is formal and has good vocabulary aspect. It would create a good discussion. I feel the
theme of the text would make it a good discussion for the productive activity.
At the same time I would assure learners will enjoy reading and would not be bored because my
main focus would be on the weaker ones, they should get the opportunity to read and give their
opinions.
I would preteach vocabulary to simplify the understanding.

Essay on Semiotics of Personal Objects
Ever since I was a little girl, clothes and shoes have been important to me. I loved picking out my
own outfits for school, and finding just the right color Keds or sandals to match. It truly was a
passion. Even now, many years later, here I am, the same shopaholic and fashion maniac I have
always been. After researching semiotics, which in short, is the method of interpreting signs and
finding a deeper meaning in everyday activities, I realize, that my reasoning for choosing the clothes
and shoes that I chose, is deeper, than just the fact that I looked cute, it was a choice of statements I
was making each and every time. The question is what statements did I make?

why not? What make it okay to go shopping in, but not good enough for dinner and a movie with a

Hitler: Old Ideas, New Meanings Essay
Hitler: Old Ideas, New Meanings
The second World War was a consequence of one man and his idealistic dream. Adolf Hitler strove
to further the "Aryan" race at the expense of other people and cultures. However, for such an
idealistic man, Hitler was fairly unoriginal. He borrowed the swastika, the main symbol used in the
war to indicate Nazi rule, from ancient civilizations. Hitler also borrowed mythology from other
cultures to promote his ideas.
The swastika was far from being Hitler's own invention. It originated in primitive cultures when
people noticed that the big dipper rotated around the North Star. This rotation formed the pattern of
a swastika when charted four times a year, that is, every thirteen weeks. The implication ... Show

It appeared in Mexican culture as a calendar which suggests the Mexicans charted their seasons by
the annual rotation of the big dipper (Nuttall,19). The swastika was also discovered in the outer
cities of Troy, but no swastikas were found in the inner cities. Since the inner cities are the oldest, it
is suggested that they were built before the big dipper began to circle the North Star in about 4000
BC, when the Trojans would have first seen this image (Nuttall, 460–1).
Hitler's swastika was different from that of the ancient cultures. Its appearance struck fear into the
hearts of millions of people. On the other hand, it could prompt great joy and celebration, probably
more so than any symbol in the history of mankind. Hitler used the swastika as a sign of the times, a
time where German people celebrated their perceived greatness, and the rest of the world sat
fearfully by.
Having borrowed the symbol which characterized the Nazi Era, it is not surprising that Hitler and
the Nazis also interpreted ancient literature to meet their own needs. When told that the Nazis
appreciated the Odyssey and its "heroic ideal" the student can easily parallel the perceived situation
of Germans in pre–W.W.II times and the trials of Odysseus and his family in "The Odyssey."
The suitors in "The Odyssey" are living off Odysseus' wealth, in much the same way as Hitler saw
the Jews living off the German people's wealth. As Odysseus' son Telemahkos tends to the castle,
suitors.

Meaning Therapy : New Challenges And The Future
Psychotherapist are facing new challenges and the future seems more chaotic and uncertain than

dominating the media. It seems like that is all we as humans think about. Psychologist have come up
with a type of therapy that is supposed to help people discover and create meanings and values in
their lives out of painful experiences. It's called Meaning Therapy. The idea originated from Viktor
Frankl's logotherapy (Wong 2015). Meaning Therapy (MT) focuses on the positive psychology of

It was Frankl who first made a compelling case that the human quest for meaning was the heart and
soul of psychotherapy. An approach by his own extraordinary survival experience in a Nazi
concentration camps (Frankl, 1985). Frankl suffered in these horrific concentration camps and was
able to somehow turn his life around when he was freed. He could have given up and blamed the
concentration camps for ruining his life but instead he got up and was able to find something that
gave him a sense of meaning. The primary objective of Meaning Therapy for Viktor was to awaken
people from their everyday busy routine and help them with their potential meaning. Meaning is
described as "man's striving to fulfill as much meaning in his existence as possible, and to realize as
much value in his life as possible" (Frankl, 2010). Viktor proposed that meaning is the core of
human values and the principle should be taken seriously. The motto of Meaning Therapy is:
meaning is all we need and relationship is all we have (Wong 2015). It focuses on the human
responsibility to live meaningfully and purposefully in every situation on a daily basis in order to
become what they are meant to be. According to Frankl's logotherapy, there are three factors that
characterize human existence: spirituality, freedom, and responsibility. The spiritual aspect is the
very core of our humanity. By tapping into our spiritual side it helps relieve the

For many of the students in my class, vocabulary instruction is of chief importance to their reading

choosing to discuss is one I implement weekly, if not daily, in my lessons because without the skills
and strategies to learn new words and understand the various meanings of words and phrases,
students will struggle to succeed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If they still don't understand the word, they can ask me and I'll prompt them or help them
accordingly. This strategy also helps students to take charge of their own learning, and to learn what
ways work best for them. Many of my students feel the need for constant validation and are always
asking "is this what I should write?" before answering a question. This best practice allows students
to build efficacy in their ability to impact their own learning. Students also tend to take more pride
in their knowledge of these new vocabulary words when they've uncovered the meaning themselves.
We often do "visual vocabulary," where students teach a new word to the class using pictures,
gestures, or other visual representations. In this way, their learning is social and students are able to
learn from each other. For example, for our current unit on 1984 by George Orwell, students are
creating visual representations of the major thematic vocabulary words (like surveillance and
totalitarianism) and then adding the vocabulary words from the chapters that fit with those words.
The students can choose what words go where, and what visuals make the

What Is The Deeper Meaning Of The Emperor's New Cloth
"The Emperor's New Clothes" Deeper Meaning
"The Emperor's New Clothes" is a story about a cloth, but has a much deeper meaning. In the story,
the emperor is obsessed with having the best clothes. He is so obsessed that he fell into the trap of
some swindlers, claiming to be exquisite weavers. The "weavers" worked and worked, and once
they were done, the Emperor sent his most honest old minister to review the cloth. The old minister
looked at the cloth, but saw nothing. Even though he failed to see anything, he told the Emperor that
it was the finest thing he had ever seen. The old minister did this because the swindlers had made
everyone believe that it was the finest cloth in the world. The minister assumed that since they said
that it was the finest cloth, it was. This created a false sense of reality, also known as brainwashing.
The act of brainwashing in this sense is the same thing that Hitler did during the Holocaust. He did
this by giving loud, convincing speeches and warping one mind after another, creating a domino
effect. The swindlers did almost the same thing by confidently telling the whole city how wonderful
they were at their job. Once people saw their cloth, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

away or hides individual opinions. An example of this in "The Emperor's New Clothes" would be
the old minister who first passed on the message to the emperor that it was the finest cloth he had
ever seen. The lie of the old minister progressed the idea of the cloth and from then on it was nearly

The New Meaning Of Educational Change Essay
According to Michael Fullan (2016) in his book, The New Meaning of Educational Change,
successful organizations that demonstrate change followed principled concepts of change. The
reason for their success if that there is tangible proof of alignment in keeping components of actions.
Fullan (2016) stated that successful change incorporates five factors. In this essay, three of the five
factors will be discussed and an example of an organization using components of the change be
revealed. Often when organization shave to go through the process of change it means either they
have gone through change to repair broken areas or they are going through change as a reflective
exercise before embarking on a larger scope of practice perhaps to expand into new growth within
their organization. In either course, the larger concern is that organizations must embrace change
and engage in meaningful constructed ways to promote the best growth with the fewest steps to
reach accomplishment. A key decision factor to change is whether an organize will change because
they adopt a model and see a better way or whether they want to save their resources. Fullan (2016)
suggested that the reason for the change is largely to work is because, the organizations, "Define
closing the gap as the overarching goal," "Assume that lack of capacity is the initial problem and
then work on it continuously," and "Stay the course through continuity of good direction by
leveraging leadership," (Fullan, 2016,

Reflection Paper On My Reading
My Reading Response There is a famous saying "Every time you open a book, you learn
something". Nevertheless, I had never imagined that reading could be fun, meaningful, and creative.
The more I read, and the more I was attached to the books. After I discovered a few of the readings,
I realized how the authors wanted to introduce their ideas without telling the story directly. This is
fairly new to me. In my earlier English classes that I had studied at the City College of San
Francisco, I read mostly textbooks and non–fiction readings. In this English 1B class, I started
reading the poem and fiction materials and they are much harder to understand. Surprisingly, it often

For my first thought, I assumed "white elephant" should be connected as a precious gift or
something that is rare to obtain. I was surprised that the author used this term as a different meaning.
It still contained the ingredient of "precious gift", however, he twisted to "unwanted precious gift."
After I read this story about two times, I was happy that I was able to visualize the scene of this
story and I believed the conversations had helped me the most. I had also found some similarity and
connections between this story compared to the others.
Comparably, "The Road Not Taken", by Robert Frost, also enclosed the mystery behind the reading.
Nevertheless, this reading was totally different than the "Hills Like White Elephants". In my
opinion, poem is not something that everyone can easily handle and it's meant to be metaphorical.
Everyone can use the expression unlike than the others. As a result, it will become with different
meaning. Here's the example that I found in "The Road Not Taken", and it clearly provided me the
two different meanings in sentences, although the words are the same, such as, "Some dirty dog
stole my wallet at the party"(Frost) and "You can't teach an old dog new tricks." (Frost) The first
phrase is not talking about the dog and the second phrase was. But they look are very similar.
Therefore, it requires effort and time to understand the meaning. On the same note, a poem is also a
reflection of our mood, and this is the reason why

Everyday Use Symbolism
A symbol is a person, place, event, or object that suggests more than just its normal meaning. The
symbols in this story, "Everyday Use", were pretty clever and told a lot of clues about the story. Also
Little peepholes that would dig into deeper meanings, and hints in the story.
The first symbol, which I thought meant something was towards Maggie and Dee's mom. "I was
always better at a man's job." (pg.320). "In real life I am a large, big boned woman with rough,
man– working hands." (pg. 318). "I can kill and clean a hog as mercilessly as a man."(pg. 318) I
think because man was used a lot referring to their Mom, might have meant that she was the man of
the house. Maybe that she was the only parent and that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I think it might have been a clever way of telling the readers that she did indeed start the fire, which
burned down the house that she didn't like.
" What happened to Dee?" I wanted to know. "She's dead," Wangero said. " I couldn't bear it any
longer, being named after the people who oppress me." (pg. 321). I think this might be a clue that
Dee herself is a symbol of change. Knowing that she wanted to change her name and she could have
started the house on fire because she wanted a change, a new house. Another symbol that she is
change might be how Maggie has scars from the fire I think Dee started and will never change her
look, but Dee will always be able to change.
" Maggie can't appreciate these quilts!" She said " She'd probably be back–ward enough to put them
to everyday use."(pg. 323). This I'm assuming is another give away that Dee represents change. She
wouldn't use a quilt for everyday use because she would always want to be changing things, not
using them everyday. Unlike Maggie who will always have those scares and would always use the
quilts.
I'm thinking that the author's main use of these symbols probably suggest that she was pushing the
theme of the story. That we, the readers, could possibly understand what the whole purpose of this
story meant. The symbols were clues into deeper understandings of the story and how

A New Meaning Of Poetry
A New Meaning of Poetry
The poems "Introduction to Poetry," "Poem," "Poetry Should Ride the Bus," "How Poetry comes to
me," "How I Discovered Poetry," and "Making It in Poetry" express their poet's thoughts on poetry
beautifully. Each poet gives their own interpretation of what poetry means to them. However, each
poem carries small differences and similarities. In the end, each poem has teaches its readers a new
way to approach and appreciate of poetry. To begin, in the poem "Introduction to Poetry," Billy
Collins wants his readers to appreciate each poem as a piece of art. He wants his readers to look at
the poem and get absorbed into the emotion of the poem instead of only wondering what the poem
means. He uses personification in this quote "tie the poem to a chair with rope/ and torture a
confession out of it" to express what we do with poems (356). We the readers should instead, pay
attention to the rhyme and style of the word. That each poem also has many different interpretations.
For example, Collins state that he asks his readers to "hold...up [the poem] to the light.../ press an
ear against its hive.../walk inside...probe [your] way out." Collins' style is similar to the style used in
the "Poem" by William Carlos Williams. He uses a cat to movements in the "jamcloset" to explain to
his reader how we should read poetry. The cat takes its time to get around the "jamcloset/ first the

Symbolism Of The Scarlet Letter
The Scarlet Letter:
Symbolism of the Scarlet 'A' Symbolism has many different meanings, and the Scarlet 'A' in "The
Scarlet Letter" has many different meanings as well. Hester Prynne is the main character who is
forced to wear the scarlet letter as remembrance for the crime and the sin that she has committed.
This letter completely ruined her reputation in her community. How could a small piece of fabric do
so much harm? This letter was a representation of something much greater than the letter 'A'. This
letter was originally made to stand for adulteress, as physical reminder of her sins. The vibrant
scarlet red is meant to shame Hester, to make her feel sorry for her mistakes. Most importantly it
was a symbol for change and an emblem of identity. In short, the scarlet letter meant much more
than a letter of shame, it was simply a piece of fabric with meaning that could easily change.
The first representation of the 'A' was adulteress. When Hester Prynne slept with Reverend
Dimmesdale, as a married woman, she became pregnant. The community thought her a widow, and
knew that she could not be pregnant, unless she had committed adultery. The community decided on
a punishment for her crimes, Hester was forced to wear the scarlet 'A' at all times as a reminder of
the sin she had committed before God. In the puritan era sin was utterly unacceptable, and Hester
had committed adultery, a sin punishable by death itself. This brings us to the next symbolic
evidence of the letter.

Boy in the Striped Pyjamas Essay
John Boyne has created a sophisticated and meaningful novel in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
through his thematic analysis of power which explores society's perception of authority; his
symbolic representation of the fence which starkly exposes Bruno's ignorance of cultural divisions;
and finally, his characterisation of Mother revealing the fraught atmosphere during the Holocaust.
The theme of power is explored in this novel through authoritative figures and their presentation in
society. The character of Father displays his newfound sovereignty with ostentatiousness, and Bruno
observes this closely. He notes how Father's actions often lead to an instantaneous response, stating,
"Father held a hand in the air, which immediately ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His innocence is so innate that he remarks to Gretel, "I don't understand why we're not allowed on
the other side of it. What's so wrong with us that we can't go over there and play?" Bruno's innocent
perspective contrasts with the cruelty occurring, questioning its value in a time when it was widely
accepted. Just as Bruno does not see the fence as a reason for segregation, so too are readers inspired
to eradicate the fences of prejudice wherever they exist in society today. The reflection this calls
readers to undertake produces a profundity and sophistication in the novel. The language used to
convey Bruno's misunderstanding of the fence's symbolism is simplistic. This literary technique,
employed by Boyne, assists in portraying the naivety of Bruno. Bruno's enquiry of "What's so
wrong with us that we can't go over there and play?" demonstrates how his juvenility shapes his
view of the world, and allows his friendship with Shmuel to flourish despite their division. Shmuel's
concession that "they were all exactly the same really" illustrates this fact. The boys' exemplar of
friendship provided by their childish perspective encourages the audience to accept everyone,
contributing to the insightfulness of the book; and in this way, its meaning and sophistication. The
characterisation of Mother

Influence Of Media On Teenagers: How Media Shapes Teen Identity

  • 1. Influence Of Media On Teenagers Today, teenagers like us are rarely alone. We are under pressure to be online and available at all times, talking, messaging, liking, commenting, sharing, posting – it never ends. Never before have we been so connected, so continuously, so instantaneously, so young. There's simply no privacy, and the social pressures that go along with that are relentless. This always–on environment is training us to value ourselves based on the number of likes we get and the types of comments that we receive. There's no separation between online and offline life. What's real or what isn't is really hard to tell the difference between. Every day we approximately spend 8 hours exposed to different forms of media. It keeps us entertained, informed, and opinionated. Media influences us through news, headlines and information we see online, on TV and radio. It creeps into our daily lives set lean subconsciously through magazines and advertisements that create and recreate standards of success, beauty and living. Our brain processes all these sets information from a variety of sources and sometimes, we no longer wonder whether the information is the truth or not, but rather just believe it right away. We react to it right away. We no longer are watchful with what enters our minds. We no longer think twice before we respond. We no longer identify ourselves from what influences us. Yes, media brings people together. It can make us laugh, think, consider, and can make us feel right. But if we're ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Flannery O ' Connor 's Revelation Flannery O'Connor believed in the power of religion to give new purpose to life. She saw the fall of the old world, felt the force and presence of God, and her allegorical fictions often portray characters who discover themselves transforming to the Catholic mind. Though her literature does not preach, she uses subtle, thematic undertones and it is apparent that as her characters struggle through violence and pain, divine grace is thrown at them. In her story "Revelation," the protagonist, Mrs. Turpin, acts sanctimoniously, but ironically the virtue that gives her eminence is what brings about her downfall. Mrs. Turpin's veneer of so called good behavior fails to fill the void that would bring her to heaven. Grace hits her with force and their illusions, causing a traumatic collapse exposing the emptiness of her philosophy. As Flannery O'Connor said, "In Good Fiction, certain of the details will tend to accumulate meaning from the action of the story itself, and when this happens they become symbolic in the way they work." (487). The significance is not in the plot or the actual events, but rather the meaning is between the lines. In Flannery O'Connor's short story "Revelation," the dynamic character of Mrs. Turpin serves as an ideal lens to examine humanity; the transformation from a woman of hypocrisy to a woman of grace is crucial to understanding the theme. Mrs. Turpin thinks very highly of herself, is satisfied with her place in the world and classifies all others ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Poem "Lucifer in the Starlight": New Meanings and Ideas Poem "Lucifer in the Starlight": New Meanings and Ideas Examining a poem in detail can bring out new meanings and ideas. By careful analysis, the full beauty of the poem can be appreciated. The poem "Lucifer in Starlight (p. 959)", by George Meredith, can be analyzed to refine the authors purpose, by examining every subtle hint, every possibility, for a deeper theme. Also, "deciphering" formal literary techniques such as metaphor, connotation, and symbolism is the key to unlock other expressions. The main theme of the poem is that Lucifer has no place out of his hell, and anything he tries to reenter heaven is futile. As with any poem, it is best to first examine how the title, "Lucifer in Starlight" relates to the body of the poem. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Perhaps this is because Meredith is trying to show Lucifer's domination. Also the poem follows the sonnet's form of fourteen lines, but there are not quatrains. Instead there Are sections of 5, 5, 2, and a final couplet. By deviated from the standard, Meredith creates a brilliant work of art. In this exceptional work, Meredith shows the menace of the devil, and then his helplessness against god. The devil has only one home, which is hell, and Meredith proves that. Meredith combines irony, with his own distinctive style and tone, to portray the ordeal quite realistically. By the caliber of Meredith's writing, this poem is worthy for more than just a place in a English ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Meaning Mishaps and the Nature of Art Essay Have you ever been confused about the purpose or meaning behind a certain piece of art? In my opinion, art is viewed many different ways. The artist will create a piece of art with a certain intended meaning, but it will most likely not be viewed in that way. When a spectator views a piece of art, they take into account their past experiences, and since everyone has gone through different things, their interpretations are different, as you can imagine. The nature of art is created when the artist intends one thing, but the spectator sees the art differently; and therefore changes the meaning when they spread their personal opinions. Pop culture has always played a very strong role in society. However, with all the advancements and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though most of them have a Facebook too, they don't approve of them for their teens. They hear scary stories that have to do with Facebook, and most mainly fear that their teens aren't going to be safe. However, another major problem is that they are putting their friends before responsibilities. This may cause outrage in some parents. They may seem strict, but really, they are just looking out for what they think is best. This is why most parents are strongly Anti–Facebook. In the end, it all comes down to one major group that contributes to the ideas of both views, and this is society in itself. Basically everywhere you look; there is something that, in some way or another, has to do with Facebook. Whether it is advertising or a kidnapping, it's always seen differently when discussed with the two different groups. Mark Zuckerberg is the creator of Facebook. When he first created Facebook, it was used at his college as a mini way to communicate. It later spread to neighboring colleges. Now, it is one of the most popular forms of communication today. He definitely didn't create Facebook to be used as a source to target people, or as an excuse to get out of responsibilities. He really didn't want any of this to happen, but because it does, people automatically blame him. This is totally the opposite effect that he intended. • 9. Literary Analysis Of Aftermath On Blackboard By Longfellow This poem was interesting because it so short and everyone can relate to it. The speaker of this poem eats the plums someone else was saving. The speaker never says who he/she was talking to, which makes me question who the speaker was talking to. He/she could be talking to his/her spouse, significant other, friend, etc. Also the plums could be a metaphor, sweet, delicious, fresh, for sexual activity, temptation, or love. Aftermath on Blackboard This poem is about how bare the land is after it being harvest, hence the title Aftermath. Longfellow wrote this poem focusing on nature and the changing of the seasons, summer to winter. He describes summer as having "sweet, new grass with flowers" while the winter has "tangled tufts from marsh." Grass on Blackboard This poem is about how nature, grass growing, has to restore itself and cover up the destruction that the humans left. The speaker lists the battlefields to show how nature covers up a disaster the humans made. Humans usually forget that the battles actually happen and they end up forgetting about it, then it keeps happening after that. Upon Julia's Clothes on Blackboard This poem describes how Julia has fancy taste in clothes and how the speaker likes how Julia looks in them. The reader learns nothing about Julia, including what she is wearing. The only thing readers know about Julia is how she looks in silk, describing how it "flows", its "liquefaction", its "vibration," and its "glittering." Anyone Lived in a ... • 11. The True Meaning Of Reading Is Not A Disinterested... For many years authorial intention was recognised as the only true meaning of a text. A philosopher in the twentieth century, Edmund Hursell, recognised the power of consciousness and the phenomenal reality of an appearance which defers questions about an ultimate end. Phenomenology notes an objects existence, but achieves meaning and finds reality through an active conscious and awareness which registers the object, suspending all presuppositions, inferences, or judgements. A text, when criticised phenomenologically, is seen in aesthetic and affective aspects, existing only in the reader. Scholar Stanley Fish extended these ideas into what is now called Reader–Response Criticism, or R–RC discussing the influence the reader has on the interpretation, making "reading an active activity" (Cowgill 5). This essay will discuss the idea that reading is not a disinterested activity by applying new critic ideals to enforce upon the notion that meaning is drawn from the readers own interpretations, shaped by their active engagement with the text.. More recently, in 2003, Lisa Zunshine further developed the importance of the reader in textual meaning by drawing from cognitive psychology in her article 'Theory of the Mind'. Zunshine suggests that such an activity is the basis for the very existence of the novel as we know it; the reason we read fiction is because it exercises our mind–reading ability (Polvinen). Readers become active participants in the creation of the work through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Essay on Code Name Verity by Elizabeth E. Wein CHARACTERS – The main character throughout most of the book is "Verity", or Julie. She is actually telling the story of Maddie, however, although her presence seems to still be main focus throughout the story. Halfway through the book, however, it switched to Maddie's point of view, or "Kittyhawk". With both of the girls, you can see the changes in them. They both develop greatly and you can see it through them by just looking at what they are afraid of. It mentions once in the story that Julie once said that she was afraid of growing old, and then she say's later that she could eat her words: she is now afraid of never growing old. • 15. The Influence Of Lying In High School Two days after a big math test, I was sitting in my usual seat in the back of the class while our teacher was handing back our test grades. Because I was in the back of the class, I got my grade last. The time it took the teacher to arrive to the last row felt like the waiting line at the airport; the time just stopped. My mind drifted while I thought about what I got on the test. I had studied hard for that test, but I was not sure if I performed well enough for a high grade. My test sliding onto my table snapped me back to reality. When I looked at it, I felt relieved. Written in red stood "98/100," but when I saw the comment beside, my smile left my face. He had commented one word: "Fine." I could not understand why. Was he not pleased with me? I have always thought that fine meant, you did all right, just okay, or not too bad. After class, I approached the teacher and asked him why he was not pleased with my grade. He looked at me, surprised, and said, "What do you mean? I was really glad with your grade ... Three weeks ago, I got I call from my parents, and got the news that my grandmother had been diagnosed with lung cancer. My grandmother has always taken care of herself. I felt devastated that I was at least thirty hours away from home with no way of getting home in time if something serious was to happen quickly. The next couple of days, I did not act as myself. My friends noticed that I did not smile as much as usual and asked what was going on with me. The easy way out, without telling them the truth, was just saying "I am fine," and try to fake a smile. Telling them I was just feeling more homesick than usual. People often use "I am fine" so they do not have to go into details about what is bothering them. • 17. Extraordinary Meaning In The Mercy By Orhan Pamuk Ordinary Objects, Extraordinary meaning "Man's sentimental attachment to object is one of life's greatest consolations." by Orhan Pamuk explains how objects with emotional meanings can often provide comfort to an individual during difficult times. This ties in with the poem The Mercy by Philip Levine in multiple ways, in which the most significant one would be how an orange became such a symbolic item to the author's mother through a series of events. There's always some things that we would never give away, and perhaps the worth would only increase with time. An ordinary object can have influential and precious meanings that worth much over its monetary value depending on the individual and the memories generated from this tangible possession. The Mercy has shown a lot of morals and insights towards life that I deeply agree in accordance with Philip Levine. Starting with the poem's title "The Mercy", it has given me wonders about what mercy as a noun could possibly mean. Thankfulness? Benevolence? However, when the "orange" was introduced, my doubts were answered immediately due to the fact that "...a young Scot... taught her the word... patiently over and over again". Being patient enough to teach someone such an easy word demonstrates kindness in both accepting foreigners who hasn't encountered such things and showing lenience. The orange embodies the Scot's mercy and metaphorically, a symbol of comfort during the girl's uneasy trip to the US. But it only had its meanings beyond just a citrus fruit from the fact that she chose to accept it and taste the sweet juice. Or the compassion of human nature. During her "long autumn voyage" she has experienced tragic events including a smallpox outbreak, but how she managed to survive could have been almost impossible without the psychological support that she has received from the young Scot earlier, through a physical orange. Her unforgettable experience on "The Mercy" impacted her maturity and would continue to influence her worldviews. Through this bittersweet journey, she was taught with having hope and enjoying and cherishing the little things. Like an orange. Persuasive Speech On Gay Jail Four years ago tumblr user bolto took a red box of sorts with a hole seemingly chewed through the top right corner and placed pink, plastic bars, dubbing it gay baby jail. It was intended to hold their pet bird who stated "i'm a bad baby." And while the intention was a minute joke for some laughs, some reblogs, little did they know it kickstarted a phenomenon. The term gay baby jail is the perfect combination of words to convey that one is worthy of punishment for their immature actions while communicating that it is all in good jest. It is truly an iconic statement that has withstood the sands of time and will likely to do so for quite a sum of time. • 21. The Year Of Magical Thinking By Joan Didion The question that we aimed to answer as a class was: what do women want? The class focused on themes such as desire, family, community safety, and even more, but I feel that the theme that really appeared in all of the books and films that we studies was the idea of meaningful work. This is one of the most important things that women want, or that anyone wants, because it is doing something on a daily basis that means something to you and means something to somebody else. Meaningful work presented itself initially in The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion when she discusses in both the play and the memoir the way that she has created an identity as a writer, as well as the way that she bonded with her husband through their joint identity as authors. It is also clear in the memoir that she is writing it in order to understand what she was going through and it is the most important way that she can cope with the horrific experience. Writing is meaningful work not only because she can share her craft and her experience to help others, but it her work that makes her who she is. In More of This World or Maybe Another, we see all of the characters come to and converge in a small laundromat. This is the point of connection for all of the characters, and it is owned and run by one of the primary characters. She pours her heart and soul into the laundromat, and she not only makes it a success, but she makes a place of safety for the people in her community. She works so hard ... • 23. Meaning Of Happiness In Brave New World The true meaning of happiness is different for everyone. For most people, it is feeling satisfied with every aspect of their life. The society of Brave New World does not know the true meaning of happiness because they have never had any form of true conflict show up their lives. When trouble comes up in their life, they avoid fixing it by taking soma. By taking soma, they base their happiness off a fake reality, therefore, it creates no true relief. Not having any form of conflict in their life creates a problem within itself because then they never get to experience true joy. People of the World State have no feelings because they were conditioned from birth to not value or worry about anything. In the scene when Lenina was telling Fanny that she was not comfortable with promiscuity, Fanny deemphasized Lenina's feelings and told her it was wrong to have sentimental value towards one another: " Everybody belongs to everyone else."(Huxley 43). • 25. Teaching New Meanings For The Sorority Environment "You quickly become what you surround yourself with." This concept was a constant reminder my mother gave me when I moved off to college. As a senior, I find this advice to hold very true when I reflect on the organizations that I have been a part of. My sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha, has had the biggest influence on not only my character, but my language as well. What first seemed like jargon has now become primary language. From learning new meanings for everyday vocabulary to different intonational patterns, my language has adapted to the environment that I have surrounded myself with for the past three years. Within a sorority, there are various terms that are held secret due to our ritual ceremonies; however, there are also numerous terms that we will use in everyday language. These terms are average words that are used throughout the day by a vast majority of the world population. However, when the words are used in the sorority environment, they take on a completely new meaning. In other words, they are semantically altered. A primary example is the transition of the words big and little from adjectives to proper nouns. Instead of defining an object's size, these terms are now used to name your big and little sister in the sorority. I remember getting asked my freshman year, "Are you going to rush?" I immediately thought, "Rush where?" As I transitioned into the Greek community, I quickly realized that the term rush changes meaning and now means going through sorority or ... Didion uses many asyndetons and polysyndetons to emphasize her emotions and poses several rhetorical questions. Throughout the essay, Didion poses an important point that, perhaps her generation is the last to truly know the meaning behind the word "home". The contributing factors to such conclusion derived from her personal experiences with her direct family (mother, father, and brother), her husband, and even her own daughter. • 31. Schools Have A New Meaning On Sexism And Double Standards Schools have put a new meaning on sexism and double standards. An example of this is having double standards and sexism towards the dress codes. Students who have families well known or the student is well liked by the teachers, do not receive the same punishment for breaking the dress code as an ordinary student. This demonstrates that schools are not fair in setting rules for dress codes. Particular students are allowed to wear certain clothing, whereas other students are punished for wearing similar clothing. Schools have double standards as to what is appropriate and what appears to be revealing and how the following student should be punished. Maggie Sunseri produced a video that led to a change in her school 's dress code exemplifying why schools should be equal, unbiased, and unsexist when setting and enforcing the dress codes. Schools have dress codes that are biased and gender specific towards women. For example, if a male student were to break dress code they would be told to fix the problem; however, a female student would have more serious consequences. Female students would have a call to parents for a change of clothing or would be sent home because administrators find this to be a distraction to the male students. School administrators do not see the effect the unjust, biased school dress codes have on the female students. The dress codes cause students to feel self–conscious, and Maggie Sunseri, a student from Woodford High, has been a victim of dress code ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Literary Analysis Of The Thing In The Forest The literary device that is going to be used to pair up with the primary context is Symbolism. In the Story The Thing in the Forest, there is plenty of symbolism in this short story. The whole story is essentially a symbol. There are plenty of objects in this story that have a very different meaning, referencing to the time period in the piece of literature. In The Thing in the Forest there is a great deal of symbolism. For example the whole story is a symbol for the war going on at that time, WWII. In the story it talks about how the girls and a number of other children went on a train to escape the cities that were most likely being hit hard by the war. There are two girls that have plenty of different meanings to them that can mean so many things, the house that they were at for a while, and of course the "thing" that also has many meanings to it. In The Thing in the Forest, let's start off with the beginning of the story. In the second paragraph it talks about Penny and Primrose, the main characters in the story. It describes the girls very precisely, "Penny was thin and dark and taller, possibly older, than Primrose, who was plump and blond and curly. Primrose had bitten nails, and velvet collar on her dressy green coat. Penny had a bloodless transparent paleness, a touch of blue in her fine lips." (Byatt 325). The symbolism in this sentence can mean that Penny had an imaginary friend, which was Primrose, that possibly died. We can infer this because the author ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Lastly, semiotics is the central understanding of culture as a signifying practice. This is the work of creating and interpreting meaning on a daily basis in a given culture. 2. Looking is active. Looking involves relationships of power, i.e. spectatorship /the gaze/ power and visual knowledge. What is meant by this and what is an example? Looking at a particular image is an active process and this was certainly proved in the text. Furthermore, looking involves different relationships of power. Spectatorship provides a deeper understanding of looking. This process is enacted in most interactive, multimodal, and relational fields. To understand spectatorship, it is important to understand the concept of the gaze. Different visual theorists to emphasize the embeddedness of the gaze have used the term the gaze in specific ways. Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning, he tells us that finding the meaning of life is finding our happiness and we must not avoid bad situations. A short story called "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley, Mustapha Mond is one of the ten controllers of World State. In this story we learn that people in a World State are brainwashed to accept what they are given and told to do, and by that keeps them stable and happy. Another short story is "Gooseberries" by Anton Chekhov where we are introduced to a character, Ivan, who believes people like his brother, Nikolai, repress their emotions in order to remain happy. Frankl and Mustapha Mond both believe in happiness, disagree on whether or not there should be distance from reality, and Frankl also disagrees with Ivan on how suffering should not be ignored. ... • 39. Lord Of The Flies Symbolism Analysis The symbols in the Lord of the Flies all change meaning throughout the novel. As the boys change and develop, the symbols change with them. Some may become more positive or more negative and some may change meaning completely. Ralph, Piggy, and Jack all adjust to being stranded on the island differently and therefore react to and treat the objects on the island differently. With Jack's development into savagery throughout the novel, his carelessness is evident in his lack of acknowledgement of symbols that are important to Ralph and Piggy who look at this experience more logically and optimistically. One symbol that changed dramatically throughout the novel is the fire. The fire in the Lord of the Flies is introduced as a symbol for hope, develops into destruction and is finalized as a representation of salvation. In the beginning of the Lord of the Flies, the fire is used as a form of hope for rescue and survival. When the boys first arrive on the island, Ralph decides that rescue should be their main focus. The boys build a signal fire to attract any passing ships. He puts Jack and his hunters in charge of keeping the fire going. One day the hunters let the fire burn out. When a ship passes without seeing the fire, Ralph panics because they have lost a chance at being rescued. Golding describes the aftermath of the ship passing, "The fire was out, smokeless and dead; the watchers were gone. A pile of unused fuel lay ready" (Golding 68). When this incident occurs, Ralph ... The New Meaning Of Airline Packing The New Meaning to Airline Packing Before 9/11 when Americans boarded an airplane, the only worry that crossed their minds could have been hijackers holding the airplane, the crew, and the passengers for some kind of ransom, or something going wrong with the airplane itself. After 9/11, we are now seeing a new kind of hijacker; terrorists who use the airplanes themselves as weapons against the people they hate. They run the airplanes into buildings to kill as many people they can with one attempt. This act also gave to the Under Secretary of Transportation the job recruiting, training, and providing weapons for air marshals for each flight. As an elite group, highly trained, the air marshals will set with the passengers and have the advantage of knowing what is going on inside the cabin at all times. O'Connor is careful to be vague and creates an ambiguous atmosphere so the reader has no option other than to perpetuate the stereotype. Her descriptions of people as "dirty," "ugly," "white–trash," and "nigger" demonstrates her prejudice. Though this Southern Christian white woman is superficially pleasant and well–mannered, she conceals her ugly thoughts of class stratum cognizant of what is below her pedestal. A church going woman who treats slaves fairly, she believes her time volunteered and philosophy of doing things for others are enough to sanctify her ugliness on the inside. The omniscient narrator observes that "Mrs. Turpin felt at awful pity... it was one thing to be ugly and another to act ugly" (473) Ironically, Mrs. Turpin is the one who acts ugly. Arrogant about her station in life, when faced to choose between "a nigger or white–trash" she would plead with Jesus to "let [her] wait until there's another place available" (472). These meanings can differ from person to person, such as each reader of this tale can walk away with a different understanding of what the deeper implication may be. With the element of religious metaphors and allusions, the author is able to connect her short story to a much deeper value that pertains to today's society and it's current relations with religion. Within "Where Are You Going? Where Have You Been?" it is prevalent that Connie's family is not religious. A biblical allusion could be made between the confrontation of Arnold Friend and Connie. Arnold Friend and his charismatic attempt to persuade Connie to get out of her house and "come for a ride" (Oates) in his car with him could be interpreted as Eve and the serpent that tempts her to eat the forbidden apple. Adolf Hitler strove to further the "Aryan" race at the expense of other people and cultures. However, for such an idealistic man, Hitler was fairly unoriginal. He borrowed the swastika, the main symbol used in the war to indicate Nazi rule, from ancient civilizations. Hitler also borrowed mythology from other cultures to promote his ideas. The swastika was far from being Hitler's own invention. It originated in primitive cultures when people noticed that the big dipper rotated around the North Star. This rotation formed the pattern of a swastika when charted four times a year, that is, every thirteen weeks. The implication ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It appeared in Mexican culture as a calendar which suggests the Mexicans charted their seasons by the annual rotation of the big dipper (Nuttall,19). The swastika was also discovered in the outer cities of Troy, but no swastikas were found in the inner cities. Since the inner cities are the oldest, it is suggested that they were built before the big dipper began to circle the North Star in about 4000 BC, when the Trojans would have first seen this image (Nuttall, 460–1). Hitler's swastika was different from that of the ancient cultures. Its appearance struck fear into the hearts of millions of people. On the other hand, it could prompt great joy and celebration, probably more so than any symbol in the history of mankind. Hitler used the swastika as a sign of the times, a time where German people celebrated their perceived greatness, and the rest of the world sat fearfully by. Having borrowed the symbol which characterized the Nazi Era, it is not surprising that Hitler and the Nazis also interpreted ancient literature to meet their own needs. When told that the Nazis appreciated the Odyssey and its "heroic ideal" the student can easily parallel the perceived situation of Germans in pre–W.W.II times and the trials of Odysseus and his family in "The Odyssey." Meaning is described as "man's striving to fulfill as much meaning in his existence as possible, and to realize as much value in his life as possible" (Frankl, 2010). This created a false sense of reality, also known as brainwashing. The act of brainwashing in this sense is the same thing that Hitler did during the Holocaust. He did this by giving loud, convincing speeches and warping one mind after another, creating a domino effect. The swindlers did almost the same thing by confidently telling the whole city how wonderful they were at their job. Once people saw their cloth, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The story shows this by giving the town all the same idea even though it was wrong. Group thinking can be a plus in some cases, but in prejudice it is very destructive. It is destructive because once everyone thinks something, no one will want to share a new opinion. Group thinking also takes away or hides individual opinions. An example of this in "The Emperor's New Clothes" would be the old minister who first passed on the message to the emperor that it was the finest cloth he had ever seen. The lie of the old minister progressed the idea of the cloth and from then on it was nearly impossible to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. The New Meaning Of Educational Change Essay According to Michael Fullan (2016) in his book, The New Meaning of Educational Change, successful organizations that demonstrate change followed principled concepts of change. The reason for their success if that there is tangible proof of alignment in keeping components of actions. Fullan (2016) stated that successful change incorporates five factors. In this essay, three of the five factors will be discussed and an example of an organization using components of the change be revealed. Often when organization shave to go through the process of change it means either they have gone through change to repair broken areas or they are going through change as a reflective exercise before embarking on a larger scope of practice perhaps to expand into new growth within their organization. In either course, the larger concern is that organizations must embrace change and engage in meaningful constructed ways to promote the best growth with the fewest steps to reach accomplishment. A key decision factor to change is whether an organize will change because they adopt a model and see a better way or whether they want to save their resources. Fullan (2016) suggested that the reason for the change is largely to work is because, the organizations, "Define closing the gap as the overarching goal," "Assume that lack of capacity is the initial problem and then work on it continuously," and "Stay the course through continuity of good direction by leveraging leadership," (Fullan, 2016, ... • 67. Reflection Paper On My Reading My Reading Response There is a famous saying "Every time you open a book, you learn something". Nevertheless, I had never imagined that reading could be fun, meaningful, and creative. The more I read, and the more I was attached to the books. After I discovered a few of the readings, I realized how the authors wanted to introduce their ideas without telling the story directly. This is fairly new to me. In my earlier English classes that I had studied at the City College of San Francisco, I read mostly textbooks and non–fiction readings. In this English 1B class, I started reading the poem and fiction materials and they are much harder to understand. Surprisingly, it often uses different configurations to educate the readers. At the same ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For my first thought, I assumed "white elephant" should be connected as a precious gift or something that is rare to obtain. I was surprised that the author used this term as a different meaning. It still contained the ingredient of "precious gift", however, he twisted to "unwanted precious gift." After I read this story about two times, I was happy that I was able to visualize the scene of this story and I believed the conversations had helped me the most. I had also found some similarity and connections between this story compared to the others. Comparably, "The Road Not Taken", by Robert Frost, also enclosed the mystery behind the reading. Nevertheless, this reading was totally different than the "Hills Like White Elephants". In my opinion, poem is not something that everyone can easily handle and it's meant to be metaphorical. Everyone can use the expression unlike than the others. As a result, it will become with different meaning. Here's the example that I found in "The Road Not Taken", and it clearly provided me the two different meanings in sentences, although the words are the same, such as, "Some dirty dog stole my wallet at the party"(Frost) and "You can't teach an old dog new tricks." (Frost) The first phrase is not talking about the dog and the second phrase was. But they look are very similar. Therefore, it requires effort and time to understand the meaning. On the same note, a poem is also a reflection of our mood, and this is the reason why ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Theme Of Existentialism In 7 Stories Existentialism proposes that we should not accept any predetermined creed or philosophical system and from that try to define who we are. In the play, 7 Stories, Morris Panych exhibits this through his characters. All of the characters' lives are without real meaning, although they have all created a conception or focus to validate their existence. Rachael, The Man, Charlotte and Rodney fall into this theme of existentialism by the way their characters are portrayed. Rachael an older woman that The Man meets on the seventh storey she is someone who believes she is god by doing deed's for them. She perceives herself as being god by creating and then solving problems for others. Rachael who herself had given another resident an eviction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the man first witness's there acts they are violently fighting one another, the man asks Charlotte about what's going on she's moderately states " Oh, that. It gives him a tremendous sense of power to hear me gasping helplessly for air." (Paynch 40) This proves the tone of the situation and how much Charlotte really cares about the situation. "Well, at least it's something. I suppose there's certain affection in it. It keeps the relationship alive anyway. "(Paynch 42) Charlotte clearly expresses here that this is out of shear meaningless of life and their relationship. " We weren't even lovers anymore. Just zombies." (Paynch 42) This is where the meaninglessness of their lives comes into play. She then states that she is having an affair another way to avoid her meaningless life. "You can't believe how complicated that is. Cheating on the man you're cheating with." (Panych 42) The characters of Charlotte and Rodney go through all of these episodes to avoid the hardships in their lives they fight to create entertainment they have affairs to escape the difficulties of their own marriage. • 71. Everyday Use Symbolism A symbol is a person, place, event, or object that suggests more than just its normal meaning. The symbols in this story, "Everyday Use", were pretty clever and told a lot of clues about the story. Also Little peepholes that would dig into deeper meanings, and hints in the story. The first symbol, which I thought meant something was towards Maggie and Dee's mom. "I was always better at a man's job." (pg.320). "In real life I am a large, big boned woman with rough, man– working hands." (pg. 318). "I can kill and clean a hog as mercilessly as a man."(pg. 318) I think because man was used a lot referring to their Mom, might have meant that she was the man of the house. Maybe that she was the only parent and that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I think it might have been a clever way of telling the readers that she did indeed start the fire, which burned down the house that she didn't like. " What happened to Dee?" I wanted to know. "She's dead," Wangero said. " I couldn't bear it any longer, being named after the people who oppress me." (pg. 321). I think this might be a clue that Dee herself is a symbol of change. Knowing that she wanted to change her name and she could have started the house on fire because she wanted a change, a new house. Another symbol that she is change might be how Maggie has scars from the fire I think Dee started and will never change her look, but Dee will always be able to change. " Maggie can't appreciate these quilts!" She said " She'd probably be back–ward enough to put them to everyday use."(pg. 323). This I'm assuming is another give away that Dee represents change. She wouldn't use a quilt for everyday use because she would always want to be changing things, not using them everyday. Unlike Maggie who will always have those scares and would always use the quilts. I'm thinking that the author's main use of these symbols probably suggest that she was pushing the theme of the story. That we, the readers, could possibly understand what the whole purpose of this story meant. The symbols were clues into deeper understandings of the story and how ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. A New Meaning Of Poetry A New Meaning of Poetry The poems "Introduction to Poetry," "Poem," "Poetry Should Ride the Bus," "How Poetry comes to me," "How I Discovered Poetry," and "Making It in Poetry" express their poet's thoughts on poetry beautifully. Each poet gives their own interpretation of what poetry means to them. However, each poem carries small differences and similarities. In the end, each poem has teaches its readers a new way to approach and appreciate of poetry. To begin, in the poem "Introduction to Poetry," Billy Collins wants his readers to appreciate each poem as a piece of art. He wants his readers to look at the poem and get absorbed into the emotion of the poem instead of only wondering what the poem means. He uses personification in this quote "tie the poem to a chair with rope/ and torture a confession out of it" to express what we do with poems (356). We the readers should instead, pay attention to the rhyme and style of the word. That each poem also has many different interpretations. For example, Collins state that he asks his readers to "hold...up [the poem] to the light.../ press an ear against its hive.../walk inside...probe [your] way out." Collins' style is similar to the style used in the "Poem" by William Carlos Williams. He uses a cat to movements in the "jamcloset" to explain to his reader how we should read poetry. The cat takes its time to get around the "jamcloset/ first the right/forefoot/carefully.../the hind" stepping down onto the pantry. We must take our ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Symbolism Of The Scarlet Letter The Scarlet Letter: Symbolism of the Scarlet 'A' Symbolism has many different meanings, and the Scarlet 'A' in "The Scarlet Letter" has many different meanings as well. Hester Prynne is the main character who is forced to wear the scarlet letter as remembrance for the crime and the sin that she has committed. This letter completely ruined her reputation in her community. How could a small piece of fabric do so much harm? This letter was a representation of something much greater than the letter 'A'. This letter was originally made to stand for adulteress, as physical reminder of her sins. The vibrant scarlet red is meant to shame Hester, to make her feel sorry for her mistakes. Most importantly it was a symbol for change and an emblem of identity. In short, the scarlet letter meant much more than a letter of shame, it was simply a piece of fabric with meaning that could easily change. The first representation of the 'A' was adulteress. When Hester Prynne slept with Reverend Dimmesdale, as a married woman, she became pregnant. The community thought her a widow, and knew that she could not be pregnant, unless she had committed adultery. The community decided on a punishment for her crimes, Hester was forced to wear the scarlet 'A' at all times as a reminder of the sin she had committed before God. In the puritan era sin was utterly unacceptable, and Hester had committed adultery, a sin punishable by death itself. This brings us to the next symbolic evidence of the letter. ... • 77. Boy in the Striped Pyjamas Essay John Boyne has created a sophisticated and meaningful novel in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas through his thematic analysis of power which explores society's perception of authority; his symbolic representation of the fence which starkly exposes Bruno's ignorance of cultural divisions; and finally, his characterisation of Mother revealing the fraught atmosphere during the Holocaust. The theme of power is explored in this novel through authoritative figures and their presentation in society. The character of Father displays his newfound sovereignty with ostentatiousness, and Bruno observes this closely. He notes how Father's actions often lead to an instantaneous response, stating, "Father held a hand in the air, which immediately ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His innocence is so innate that he remarks to Gretel, "I don't understand why we're not allowed on the other side of it. What's so wrong with us that we can't go over there and play?" Bruno's innocent perspective contrasts with the cruelty occurring, questioning its value in a time when it was widely accepted. Just as Bruno does not see the fence as a reason for segregation, so too are readers inspired to eradicate the fences of prejudice wherever they exist in society today. The reflection this calls readers to undertake produces a profundity and sophistication in the novel. The language used to convey Bruno's misunderstanding of the fence's symbolism is simplistic. This literary technique, employed by Boyne, assists in portraying the naivety of Bruno. Bruno's enquiry of "What's so wrong with us that we can't go over there and play?" demonstrates how his juvenility shapes his view of the world, and allows his friendship with Shmuel to flourish despite their division. Shmuel's concession that "they were all exactly the same really" illustrates this fact. The boys' exemplar of friendship provided by their childish perspective encourages the audience to accept everyone, contributing to the insightfulness of the book; and in this way, its meaning and sophistication. The characterisation of Mother ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
