InfiniBand is used by many storage vendors like EMC, PureStorage, Oracle, and Nexenta as a low-latency, high-performance interconnect for scalable IO. It offers functionality for application clustering, fast inter-process communication, and storage area networks. InfiniBand uses CX4 and QSFP connectors depending on the data rate, and adapters and switches are relatively inexpensive compared to other technologies. The document provides instructions for configuring InfiniBand on vSphere including installing drivers, configuring the subnet manager, and setting the MTU.

Ceph, a software-defined storage, provides an original solution for this problem and guarantees a resilient and self-healing way for managing large amount of data up to the Exabyte level. In this session I will talk about a new feature introduced in oVirt 3.6 which provides the ability to integrate with Red Hat Ceph storage using Cinder, a storage service used mainly for OpenStack. This integration reveals new opportunities and tools for storage management in a scalable and virtualized way and also opens the door for interesting future integrations with other storage providers.

Integrating GlusterFS with iSCSI Target
This document discusses integrating the GlusterFS distributed file system with iSCSI target storage. Gluster as Block Store in Containers
Gluster can provide block storage using LIO/TCMU. It was demonstrated providing an iSCSI block device from a Gluster volume, including block snapshots. Performance numbers were shown and it can integrate with containers by providing a persistent block device. Kubernetes was demonstrated using Gluster block storage by having nodes initiate iSCSI sessions to access a target device mounted in pods. Future work may include more testing, Heketi integration for provisioning, and hyper-convergence.
The Open vSwitch and OVN Projects

Open vSwitch (OVS) is a multilayer open source virtual switch. OVS is designed to enable massive network automation through programmatic extension, while still supporting standard management interfaces. OVN is a new network virtualization project that brings virtual networking to the Open vSwitch user community. OVN includes logical switches and routers, security groups, and L2/L3/L4 ACLs, implemented on top of a tunnel-based overlay network.
In this presentation, we will provide an overview of the current state of the projects and their future plans, such as:
- The current state of the Linux, DPDK, and Hyper-V ports
- A status update on a portable BPF-based datapath
- The latest stateful and OpenFlow features available in OVS
- Performance and debugging enhancement to OVN

CoreOS Overview
CoreOS is a minimal operating system designed for clustered, containerized workloads where services run as Docker containers and updates are handled safely. During last year, we have seen the rise of LibraryOSes in the hypervisor world. Fast, scalable and light, they bring to hypervisors the resource efficiency of Containers while maintaining many of its well known isolation and manageability advantages.
While most LibraryOSes are niche in what they do, OSv is designed to run almost any POSIX compliant application and just have a slight focus in the Java application. Which applications can we run? And why? What's the story with Java and what can users gain from it? And more importantly: How can Xen users and the Xen community at large benefit from OSv? Those are some of the questions that I intend to cover in this presentation.

Persistent Storage with Containers with Kubernetes & OpenShift
Manually configuring mounts for containers to various network storage platforms and services is tedious and time consuming. OpenShift and Kubernetes provides a rich library of volume plugins that allow authors of containerized applications (Pods) to declaratively specify what the storage requirements for the containers are so that OpenShift can dynamically provision and allocate the storage assets for the specified containers. As the author of the Kubernetes Persistent Volume specification, I will provide an overview of how Persistent Volume plugins work in OpenShift, demo block storage and file storage volume plugins and close with the Red Hat storage roadmap.

Ceph on Windows
Ceph, an open source distributed storage system, has been ported to run natively on Windows Server to provide improved performance over the iSCSI gateway and better integration into the Windows ecosystem. Key components like librbd and librados have been ported to Windows and a new WNBD kernel driver implements fast communication with Linux-based Ceph OSDs. This allows access to RBD block devices and CephFS file systems from Windows with comparable performance to Linux.

While 100G NICs and switches are available, software and operating systems need improvements to fully leverage the capabilities and handle the throughput, such as integrating RDMA for high performance.

Persistent Storage with Containers with Kubernetes & OpenShift
Manually configuring mounts for containers to various network storage platforms and services is tedious and time consuming. OpenShift and Kubernetes provides a rich library of volume plugins that allow authors of containerized applications (Pods) to declaratively specify what the storage requirements for the containers are so that OpenShift can dynamically provision and allocate the storage assets for the specified containers. As the author of the Kubernetes Persistent Volume specification, I will provide an overview of how Persistent Volume plugins work in OpenShift, demo block storage and file storage volume plugins and close with the Red Hat storage roadmap.

Ceph, an open source distributed storage system, has been ported to run natively on Windows Server to provide improved performance over the iSCSI gateway and better integration into the Windows ecosystem. Key components like librbd and librados have been ported to Windows and a new WNBD kernel driver implements fast communication with Linux-based Ceph OSDs. This allows access to RBD block devices and CephFS file systems from Windows with comparable performance to Linux.

We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate.
