Industry leaders Cisco, NetApp, VMware and Symantec have teamed up to develop a best practice framework and performance benchmark based on the VMware vSphere® Storage APIs - Data Protection (VADP). The test configuration uses the popular NetApp FlexPod environment, and the result proves that you can easily protect over 4 TB of virtual machine data per hour. And improved backup performance creates more reliable backups, shorter backup windows and less impact on the vSphere infrastructure.
In this session, we will show how these performance numbers can be easily obtained with minimal hardware and a small budget. In addition to backup performance, we will also discuss restore performance considerations.
Key topics include:
• How to select the correct hardware for the best ROI
• Strategies for minimizing backup impact and maximizing backup throughput
• Performance characteristics of VADP
• SAN or NBD (network) transports: which is recommended?
• Configurations for the fastest possible restores
VMware Backups That Work—Lessons Learned From VADP Performance Benchmark TestingSymantec
We’ve pushed the backup performance envelope so that you don’t have to! Industry leaders Cisco, NetApp, VMware and Symantec teamed up to develop a best practice framework and performance benchmark based on the vStorage APIs for Data Protection (VADP). The test configuration uses the popular NetApp FlexPod environment. The result that proves that you can easily protect over 4 TB of virtual machine data an hour. Most think that to provide this sort of performance, a mountain of hardware is required. This is not the case. We show you how these performance numbers can be easily obtained with minimal hardware and a small budget. Improving backup performance also creates more reliable backups, shorter backup windows and less impact on the vSphere infrastructure. Whether or not you are using NetBackup, we invite you to attend this hangout where we'll dig deep into VMware VADP and its performance characteristics. We'll share lessons learned from extensive lab benchmarks simulating real production workloads. This will help you design and deploy a backup solution for your VMware vSphere environment that meets your business SLAs.
Bonus exclusively at this hangout: In this hangout, we will provide a sneak preview some of NetBackup for VMware features coming in NetBackup 7.6. We have exciting results to share on how NetBackup is pushing the performance envelope further!

The popularity of Virtual SAN is growing daily. Server admins are finally free to aggregate storage in their servers to create a shared storage system that scales with their compute needs. The underlying key to making it all work is networking. All Virtual SAN data flows through it, and correct selection and configuration of networking components will mean the difference between disruptive success or dramatic failure. This session will give deep insight in the do's and don'ts of Virtual SAN networking. Best practices for physical and virtual switch configuration and performance testing will be discussed. Virtual SAN 5.5 and 6.0 will be covered, and the networking differences discussed. Methods of troubleshooting network issues will be covered. For those configuring a Virtual SAN network for the first time, for labs or enterprise scale, this session is a must-see.

Presentation explains the difference between multi site high availability (aka metro cluster) and disaster recovery. General concepts are similar for any products but presentation is more tailored for VMware technologies.
Not content to simply describe the Virtual Volume (VVOL) framework, this session instead examines practical use cases: How different configurations and workloads benefit from VVOLs. Learn how Storage Policy Based Management (SPBM) couples with VVOLs to provide VM configuration options not previously available. We demonstrate a handful of real-life scenarios, specifically covering how VVOLs benefits oversubscribed systems, disaster recovery preparation and multi-tenant requirements for customers. Specific configuration options and constraints are covered in detail, including how they work with underlying storage.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

12. Detailed Look at the VADP Snapshot Process
• During backup VADP creates snapshot
– VSS provider flushes OS buffers within VM
– Snapshot created, VMDKs are frozen
– Redo log created – all writes redirected to redo log
– VM data copied to backup storage
– Redo log applied to original VMDKs
– Snapshot released - backup completed
• Why does this matter?
– Each step involves significant I/O
– Reducing snapshots per Datastore improves backup performance & reliability
– Incremental backups are quick and reduces snapshot impact

38. Best Practices in using NBD and 10Gb
• Limit 3-4 streams from a

• The VMkernel (management) port
may stay in the default VM
Network, rest of the bandwidth
complements VM traffic
• Automated in NetBackup using

39. Best Practices in using NBD and 10Gb
• Backup VMs from multiple ESXi systems
to fill the pipe to backup server
– 1 backup from 10 ESXi hosts is better
than 10 backups from a single ESXi
host!
– Effective utilization of backup server
– Concurrency = Smaller backup
window
– Lower strain on each ESXi host

41. Best Practices for Hotadd Transport
• Proxy VMs need to access the
datastore of VMs being protected
• Recommended to have a Proxy VM
at each ESXi system
• Proxy VMs can undergo vMotion or
VMware HA
• Proxy VM Operating System
– SuSE Enterprise Server for VMware
– SuSE Enterprise Server

• Proxy VMs do not need to be backed

Restore Performance
• Restore process involves more I/O than backup process
– Disks (vmdk’s) must be first created as target of restore
– Type of vmdk can impact restore speed and I/O required
• Single restore typically won’t saturate restore path
– Typically restore performance about half of backup performance
– As with backup – balance restores across ESX or Datastore
• Restore performance highly dependent
on VMDK format
– Thin – faster restores when data is small
percent of VMDK reserved size
– Thick – faster when VMDK nearly full

FlexPod is the most efficient way to make a successful journey to your next-generation data center.
FlexPod accelerates the transformation from infrastructure silos to a virtualized, shared environment with pre-validated, standardized, scalable building blocks that leverage a next-generation data center solution from Cisco, NetApp, and leading OS and hypervisor partners.
Unlike other solutions, FlexPod is a flexible platform—designed to fit many environments and handle mixed workloads. It can be easily tuned and optimized for your specific requirements. They are backed by easy-to-use tools that facilitate your design and sizing process—so you can add applications, and scale up and out as necessary.
The solutions are integrated—so you can count on centralized and simplified management.
And the solutions are pre-validated—so they facilitate rapid, repeatable deployment
Benefits
Flexibility: Future-proof platform to meet today’s challenges and scale for future needs
Built-in data center efficiencies: lower TCO with simplified deployments, rapid provisioning of resources
Reduce risk with prevalidated architecture with prescriptive sizing and design guides
