Prior to independence, Indonesia's economy was oriented around providing raw materials to the Netherlands and relied on subsistence agriculture and plantation crops. After independence, economic mismanagement occurred under Sukarno before economic reforms under Suharto prioritized growth. Rapid economic expansion occurred during the 1980s and 1990s due to natural resources but the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis severely impacted Indonesia, causing a recession. Agriculture, historically important, has declined while industry and manufacturing have expanded.
