Paete
Wood
Carving
The Woodcarving Capital of the Philippines
Paete as the Woodcarving Capital of the
Philippines Statues are one of the art
forms that feature
predominantly in the
Catholic Churches. These
statues serve as a reminder
for the key events, beliefs,
and individuals in church
history.
Paete Woodcarving has
been a thriving industry
since the Spanish era
until now.
Even the town’s name,
Paete, goes away from
the Spanish colonizer’s
norms of naming places
after saints.
Some of his prominent
works are:
• The image of San Pedro
Calungsod
• the paper mâché image of
Ninoy Aquino and,
• The mythical figure

Maranao
Wood
Carving
Natural forms are allowed only on the condition that they
are “denatured.” Because of this limitation, the Maranao
woodcarvers use the “okkil” motif in most of their works.
The “okkil” motif is rich in Sassanian character — the
flowing floral forms and S movements. The Filipino
Muslim adaptation of the “okkil” has a strong indigenous
character, deriving inspiration from local plants, sea
corals and native objects.
Figure 2.
Okkil
The taboo or tabu is a Maranao
drum – a signaling instrument
horizontally suspended in front
of mosques. A standard rhythm
call people to prayer on Fridays,
while a more intricate tempo is
played during the Ramadan.
The Sarimanok is a legendary bird that
serves as the symbol of the Maranaos.
Came from the words “sari” (a garment
of different colors deeply related to their
culture) and “manok” (rooster with its
beautiful and colorful feathers), it,
accordingly, represents good fortune
and prosperity and is also an essential
trademark of their art forms.

Ifugao
Wood
Carving
The Ifugaos of Northern
Luzon are famous for the
way they carved the
mountain slopes that form
the legendary Banaue rice
terraces. They are also well
known for their mastery of
wood carving. Ifugao
woodcarvings are usually of
their deities.
Ifugao Woodcarvers
Bul-ul
The most numerous and best
known of Ifugao figurative
sculptures and usually take
the form of either a standing
or seated figure.
The Bul-ul or Bulol, as it is locally
known, is an Ifugao
anthropomorphic carving that
symbolizes an Ifugao rice God. It
also signifies fertility and is
believed to gain spirits of
ancestors or guardians.
Bul-ul, the rice man, is a carved
wooden figure with simple
shape of a human being, male or
female.
Bul-uls play an important role in
the agriculture of the Ifugao
people of northern Luzon in
Philippines and said to guard the
rice crop.
It is carved out of strong narra or ipil wood and sometimes
stone. Sizes also vary, depending on its use. Bululs are usuall
made in pairs, a male and a female, but some are done
individually.
Tagbanwa
Wood
Carving
South of the Philippines, one finds the
Tagbanwa woodcarvers. Whereas the
Ifugaos engage in woodcarving primarily
because it is an essential part of their
beliefs and customs.
Tagbanwa wood carving is unique because
it incorporates a technique of completely
blackening the surface of the wood and
then bringing out white portions while
sketching the design.
A wooden sculpture from the Tagbanua
people (one of the oldest ethnic groups).
They are found in central and Northern
Palawan. Only a few of the Tagbanwa
woodcarvings are intended to use in
rituals.

Tools
A chip carving knife has a blade about 1 1/2" long, and
has a handle designed to fit comfortably in the hand.
These chisels have a flat edge. They are not usually
used for sculpture. It is especially suitable for rough
jobs, where heavy blows are needed.
The Gouge is a chisel with a rounded or angular tip
used to cut curves and hollows. Gouges are the work
horses of wood carving.
V-gouges are designated by the width between the top
edge tips and the angle of the vee bottom edge. It is
useful for outlining elements in a carving and for
adding hair and fur texture.

A versatile carving tool that can be used to make

detailed cuts with the tip.
A chip carving knife and an assortment of palm gouges are all that
is needed for creating small carvings in basswood or other soft
woods. These tools are designed to be pushed with the hand and
not tapped with a mallet. They're used mostly for detail work.
The traditional mallet for carving is cylindrically shaped and
made from a heavy, dense hardwood. A type of hammer with a
larger-than-usual head made of wood, rubber or similar non-
iron material, used by woodworkers for driving a tool, such as a
chisel.
