PRINCIPLES OF
INDIGENOUS
CREATIVE DESIGNS
•Principles Indigenous creative design
often emphasizes a deep connection to
culture, community, and the
environment.
• These principles vary across different
Indigenous cultures but commonly
include elements such as:
CULTURAL AUTHENTICITY
•Designs reflect and honor the cultural
heritage, traditions, and symbols of the
Indigenous community.
SUSTAINABILITY
•Respect for the environment and sustainable
practices are integral to Indigenous design,
often incorporating materials and techniques
that have minimal ecological impact.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
•Designs are often created collaboratively, with
input and participation from community
members, elders, and artisans, fostering a
sense of ownership and continuity.
STORYTELLING AND SYMBOLISM
•Indigenous designs often convey narratives,
histories, and spiritual beliefs through symbols,
patterns, and motifs, serving as a form of
cultural preservation and identity expression.
ADAPTABILITY AND
INNOVATION
•Indigenous design principles embrace
adaptability and innovation, integrating
traditional knowledge with contemporary
techniques and technologies while
maintaining cultural integrity.
RESPECT FOR SACRED
SPACES
•Designs may incorporate elements that
respect and acknowledge sacred spaces, sites,
and rituals important to the community’s
spiritual and cultural practices.
INTERCONNECTEDNESS
• Indigenous design often reflects a holistic
worldview, emphasizing the interconnectedness
of all living beings and the natural world,
promoting harmony and balance.
MEASURING AND
LAYING OUT
LENGTH
MEASURING AND LAYING OUT
LENGTH
•Measuring and laying out length involves
various methods and tools, depending on
the context and precision required. Here
are some common approaches:
MEASURING TAPE
• A flexible tape measure is a
versatile tool for measuring
length accurately. It’s
commonly used in
construction, sewing, and
other applications where
precise measurements are
needed.
MEASURING TAPE
• The measuring tape is the
most common measuring
tool used for measuring the
length of the woods and
cuts in woodworking. It is
used in everyday work for
delivering precise
measurements..
RULER
• Rulers come in various
lengths and are suitable for
measuring shorter distances
with high accuracy. They are
often used in drafting,
crafting, and small-scale
projects.
YARDSTICK
• Similar to a ruler but longer,
yardsticks are useful for
measuring longer distances in a
straight line. They are
commonly used in carpentry,
home improvement, and large-
scale crafting objects.
METER STICK
• A meter stick is a longer version
of a ruler, typically one meter in
length. It’s commonly used in
scientific experiments, engineering
, and educational settings where
metric measurements are
preferred.
Carpenter
Square
• Carpenter’s square is basically a
scale. This form of scale is the
combination of 2 scales joint
together at 90o angle.
• It is used to measure the lines and
angles to make the perfect cut.
 When laying out length, it’s important use the
appropriate measuring tool for specific task
and to double-check measurements for
accuracy. Additionally, marking tools such as
pencils, chalk, or marking pens are often used to
indicate measurement points on surfaces or
materials.
CRAFTS DESIGNING OF
INDIGENOUS
CRAFTS DESIGNING OF INDIGENOUS
• Designing indigenous crafts involves incorporating
traditional techniques, materials, and innovate products.
• Here are some tips for designing indigenous crafts.
RESEARCH
• Start by conducting research on the culture, history, and
traditions of the indigenous community you are working
with. This will help you understand the significance of
certain materials, symbols, and techniques in their craft
traditions.
COLLABORATION
• Work closely with artisans and craftspeople from the
indigenous community to learn about their skills,
knowledge, and expertise. Collaborating with them will
help ensure that designs are culturally appropriate and
respectful.
MATERIALS SELECTION
• Use materials are traditional to the indigenous
community, such as natural fibers, dyes, and woods.
Consider sustainability and ethical sourcing practices
when selecting materials for your designs.
MOTIF AND PATTERN
DEVELOPMENT
• Incorporate traditional motifs, pattern, and symbols into
your designs to highlight the cultural identity of the
indigenous community. Experiment with different
variations and interpretations to create unique and
visuallyh appealing products.
COLOR PALETTE
• Use colors that are traditional to the indigenous
community, taking inspiration from nature, rituals, and
ceremonies. Consider the symbolism and significance of
different colors when developing your color palette.
FUNCTIONALITY
• Ensure that your designs are functional and practical,
while also preserving the craftsmanship and cultural
heritage of the indigenous community. Consider how the
products will be used in everyday life and how they can
be adapted for contemporary markets.
QUALITY AND CRAFTMANSHIP
• Pay attention to the quality of materials and the
craftsmanship of the products. Work closely with artisans
to ensure that each piece is made with care and attention
to detail.
MARKETING AND PROMOTION
• Showcase the cultural and artistic value of indigenous
crafts in your marketing and promotion efforts. Highlight
the unique stories, traditions, and techniques behind each
product to attract a wider audience and raise awareness
about indigenous communities and their crafts.

CRAFTS OUT OF
WOODS
Classification
of Wood
What is wood?
Wood is a porous and fibrous structural tissue found
in the stems and roots of trees and other woody
plants.
Classification of Wood
 Natural Wood
 Engineered Wood
Natural wood
- is marketed in the form of beams, lamellas, boards and
strips.
By this term we mean wood as a raw material “in its pure
state”, unprocessed and unmixed with other materials
(plastics, fibres, glues, etc.) as is the case with plywood or
chipboard.
Engineered wood
- is a whole class of building products and materials.
They're made by binding pieces of real wood, scrap
wood, shredded wood fibers and/or sawdust with
adhesives to create products that look and act like
wood but are designed to be stronger and more
durable.
Where do we
generally find wood?
Classification of Natural Wood
 Hard Wood
 Soft Wood
•Hardwoods
- typically come from broad-leaved (deciduous) trees (those that
drop their leaves each fall, also known as angiosperms because
their seeds are encased in fruits or pods).
- Hardwoods have lovely, attractive grains and are used for such
things as making fine furniture and decorative woodwork.
Examples include cherry, birch, mahogany, maple, oak, teak, and
walnut.
•Softwoods
- typically come from evergeen (coniferous) trees (those that have
needles and cones and retain them year-round, also called
gymnosperms.
- softwoods often come from very tall, straight trees, and are better
suited for construction work (in the form of planks, poles, and so
on).
- Examples include cedar, cypress, fir, pine, spruce, and redwood.
A clamp is a very useful tool in any workshop. It is a fastening tool. It holds an object in a place to work without
drifting. Clamps are of various types based on their usability and structure. But all of them have the same
purpose of preventing movement by applying inward pressure.
It holds wood pieces in a place to make a cut. The clamps hold the wood piece tightly in a place to avoid drifting
while applying force on the wood to make a cut.
Clamp
The saws which are used by hand manually to cut objects are handsaws. A typical handsaw includes a wooden
handle and a sharp blade with numerous pointed teeth.
Handsaws are used in woodworking to cut through wood pieces or other materials as per the requirements.
They can make small to large cuts. Different handsaws serve different purposes of cutting wood pieces. The
user gets the maximum control over cut while working with a handsaw and can make precise desired cuts.
Handsaw
Sliding bevel is an essential woodworking tool. The tool includes a pivoting blade, a screw
and a handle. The blade of the tool creates angles with its pivoting mechanism.
The sliding bevel is mainly used for marking angles on the wood. This handy tool can easily
duplicate the angles from one to another. With the help of this tool, precise angled cuts can
be made.
Sliding Bevel
A Sanding Block is a sanding paper holding device. It is one of the most basic woodworking
tools. It is a small box-like object.
The sanding block’s main purpose is to stick the sanding paper on it. The block with the
sanding paper helps to remove the rough grains off from the wood surface. It helps in making
the layer smooth.
Sanding Block
It is an essential power saw for cutting woods. It consists of a small length blade that is
replaceable.
Jigsaws are used for cutting out shapes on wood pieces. It can cut from different angles.
Miter joints can be made using a jigsaw. Jigsaws are also used for cutting out different stencil
patterns.
Jigsaw
The power drills are generally used for drilling holes in wood pieces. Depending
on the drilling bit, the hole can be of varying size and shape. It is also used for
screwing fasteners.
Power Drill
Procedure in Making An
Article/Product Made of
Wood
3. Cutting and Shaping
use appropriate tools such as saws, planers, and routers to
cut the wood into the desired shapes and sizes according to
your design.
4. Joinery
Employ various techniques such as dovetail joints, mortise and
tenon joints, or wood glue to securely join the pieces of wood
together.
5. Sanding and Smoothing
Smooth out any rough edges or surfaces using sandpaper or a sander
to prepare the wood for finishing.
6. Finishing
Apply a finish to the wood such as varnish, stain, or paint to enhance
its appearance and protect it from moisture and wear.
7. Assembly
Assemble all the components of the product according to your design,
ensuring that everything fits together correctly and securely.
8. Quality Control
Inspect the finished product for any defects or imperfections, making
any necessary adjustments or repairs.
9. Packaging and Shipping
Once the product passes inspection, package it securely for
transportation to its final destination.
10. Marketing and Sales
Promote your wood products through various channels such as online
platforms, craft fairs, or retail stores to attract customers and generate
sales.

  • 57. What is wood? Wood is a porous and fibrous structural tissue found in the stems and roots of trees and other woody plants.
  • 58. Classification of Wood  Natural Wood  Engineered Wood
  • 59. Natural wood - is marketed in the form of beams, lamellas, boards and strips. By this term we mean wood as a raw material “in its pure state”, unprocessed and unmixed with other materials (plastics, fibres, glues, etc.) as is the case with plywood or chipboard.
  • 60. Engineered wood - is a whole class of building products and materials. They're made by binding pieces of real wood, scrap wood, shredded wood fibers and/or sawdust with adhesives to create products that look and act like wood but are designed to be stronger and more durable.
  • 61. Where do we generally find wood?
  • 62.
  • 63. Classification of Natural Wood  Hard Wood  Soft Wood
  • 64. •Hardwoods - typically come from broad-leaved (deciduous) trees (those that drop their leaves each fall, also known as angiosperms because their seeds are encased in fruits or pods). - Hardwoods have lovely, attractive grains and are used for such things as making fine furniture and decorative woodwork. Examples include cherry, birch, mahogany, maple, oak, teak, and walnut.
