Indian football history
• Indian teams started touring Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia and
Thailand in late 1930s. Soon after the success of several Indian football
clubs, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) was formed in 1937.
The London Olympic was India's first major international tournament,
where a predominately barefooted Indian team lost 2–1 to France, failing
to convert two penalties. The Indian team was greeted and appreciated by
the crowd for their sporting manner.
• India qualified by default for the 1950 FIFA World Cup as a result of the
withdrawal of all of their scheduled opponents. But the governing body,
the AIFF, decided against going to the World Cup, being unable to
understand the importance of the event at that time. Reason shown by
AIFF was that there was the cost of travel (although FIFA agreed to bear a
major part of the travel expenses), lack of practice time, team selection
issues and valuing the Olympics over the FIFA World Cup

We don’t care
• We like to sound intellectual by pondering over such things and coming up with
probable reasons but the bottom line is that the majority of Indian football fans
are not fans of Indian football. This is what is hurting us. The country's youth are
a bunch of Man United/Barcelona/Real Madrid/etc supporters Very, very few of
them can name the Indian national team's starting 11. Most of us know our
favourite European club inside out right from the first team squad members to
the youngest academy player, but knowledge of Indian football is limited to Sunil
Chhetri .
Responsibilities of Aiff
• How could Praful Patel become Aiff president thus he don't have any idea of
football. In Indian football the politics has taken over the sports, and it is causing
disruption in placing right talent in team. The government is giving more priority
to cricket than football because earning of money in cricket is much more than
football. For that the public is also getting attracted towards most glamorous
version of cricket instead of unglamorous football in India.

pitch at Salt Lake stadium?
The goverment should tell no to the Ipl officials. That’s why we are on 149 in FIFA
ranking. The AIFF have to professional if they really want to develop football.

8. Recent condition
Here’s a simple experiment for an Indian football fan to try. Venture beyond the traditional
football strongholds of West Bengal, Goa, Kerala, the North-Eastern states and some select
urban pockets. Now try to start a football discussion with a random person. You will, in all
likelihood, receive a blank stare, a few giggles or if you are lucky, a mention of the previous
FIFA World Cup. Why does the world’s most popular sport draw such less following in India, a
country which is otherwise rather quick to adapt to global trends?
After 27 years, the Indian national team will finally get to play in the biggest competition of
Asia. Being part of the Asian cup 2011 after such a long time,it is really a big achievement .
But we are the lowest ranked team in the tournament, though all Indians were expecting
minimum performance from the players.
But ultimately what happened, India just surrendered in Asian cup, and considering 13 goals,
without getting any point.

9. What to do to develop Indian football
• This was an explosive comment made by Scott O'Donnell, Technical Director of Academies in
India at the FICCI Football Convention in 2013, commenting on the lack in noticeable
improvement, in spite of FIFA setting up the academy and youth development programs in
India.
• Add to that, the need for an effective scouting network is paramount right from the pre-teen
years from where the kids can be molded in effective forms of football which are difficult, if
not downright impossible to inculcate once in the advanced years. While training may improve
one later on, the basic foundation and technique is learnt in the tender years.
• The Spanish and German youth development programs over the last decade has seen the
national side benefit from their sound planning wherein the development of a potential
player starts from the age of 7.
• As India has made a bid to host the FIFA U-17 World Cup, it needs to get its internal policies
sorted, else we would most possibly be left with the unique situation of not finding enough
players to represent the nation at the youth level. Although the AIFF is doing its bit by
establishing the Indian Youth only Pailan Arrows side who regularly jostle with the big boys in
Indian football, the states too have to buck up and go beyond their petty politics and one-upmanship
to do what is best for Indian football.

10. Future Prospects
Indian footballing circles are in a frenzy as they prepare for FIFA president Sepp Blatter’s impending visit to
India. Blatter, on his second trip to India, the first being in 2007, has come to lay the groundwork for a bid by
India for the U-17 World Cup in 2017, which if awarded to the country would definitely be the biggest
football tournament to be hosted in the India sub-continent.
FIFA Goal Project – After the first Goal project, involving the construction of the AIFF headquarters in
Delhi was completed, and subsequently inaugurated by Sepp Blatter in 2007, a second FIFA Goal project was
launched in December 2006 involving construction of training facilities and administrative offices in the two
states of Karnataka and Sikkim.
This project was expected to help augment the training facilities in these areas, but progress has been really
slow in Sikkim and the venture is still under implementation, having come up against governmental red-tape
and general apathy of the local authorities.
