BASIC RULES Footbal also known as soccer is the most popular sport in the world. It is a widely popular team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field. The team which scores more goals than the opposing team Wins! Here are some simple set of rules that need to followed when playing Soccer. 01 Match Duration A standard match consists of two 45-minute halves, with a 15-minute halftime break. If the match is a knockout competition and ends in a draw, extra time or penalties may be used to determine the winner. 04 Goal Kicks Goal Kick is Awarded when the ball goes over the goal line, last touched by an attacking player. The ball is kicked from within the goal area. 03 Penalty Kicks A penalty kick is awarded when a player commits a foul inside their own penalty area. The ball is placed at the penalty spot, and only the goalkeeper can defend the shot. 02 Fouls and Misconduct A foul occurs when a player commits an action considered unfair, such as tripping, pushing, kicking, or handling the ball. As an answer to which the refree gives the player a Yellow card or a Red card. Page 01
01 Formation Of Rules In 1863, the Football Association (FA) was formed in England, creating the first standardized rules of football, marking the birth of modern football. Globalization By the late 20th and early 21st centuries, football became a global industry with huge television contracts, sponsorship deals, and the rise of football superstars like Pelé, Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo. The Rise of Club Football In the 20th century, club competitions like the UEFA Champions League and national leagues (e.g., English Premier League, La Liga, Serie A) gained immense popularity. First World Cup The first FIFA World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930, with 13 teams participating. It remains the biggest international football tournament. GLORIOUS HISTORY OF FOOTBALL Early forms of football-like games were played in ancient China, Greece, and Rome (e.g., Cuju in China around 3000 BC). In medieval England, “mob football” was played, with minimal rules and often chaotic matches between villages. Page
MAJOR COUNTRIES INVOLVED BRAZIL GERMANY ARGENTINA Known for its rich football history, Brazil has won the FIFA World Cup five times (the most by any nation). Another football powerhouse, Germany has won the World Cup four times and has consistently been a strong competitor. THE INDIAN FOOTBALL SCENE? India is still developing in the world of football and does not rank among the top global footballing nations. It ranks 102 in the Men’s FIFA World Ranking. • The Indian Super League (ISL), launched in 2014, has gained popularity and attracted international stars, helping to raise the profile of football in the country. • The Indian national team has had some success in regional tournaments like the SAFF Championship (South Asian Football Federation), which it has won multiple times. • Indian Football is gaininng a lot of popularity among the Youth, which signifies a better future in both domestic and international football. MAJOR PLAYERS IN HISTORY Pel é Diego Maradona Thierry Henry Pelé, is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time. He won three FIFA World Cups with Brazil and scored over 1,000 career goals. Pelé revolutionized the game with his skill, technique, and vision, becoming a global football icon. Diego Maradona, an Argentine football legend, led his country to World Cup glory in 1986 with iconic moments like the "Hand of God" and the "Goal of the Century." Known for his extraordinary dribbling and creativity, he was one of the greatest players ever Thierry Henry, a French football legend, was known for his pace, technical skill, and goal- scoring ability. He played a key role in France's 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 victories and enjoyed successful club stints at Arsenal and Barcelona. Page
Lionel Messi Lionel Messi, one of the greatest footballers ever, is known for his dribbling, vision, and playmaking. He spent most of his career at Barcelona, winning numerous titles, including La Liga and Champions League. Messi led Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup and Copa América. He has won the Ballon d'Or seven times, setting multiple records. Cristiano Ronaldo Cristiano Ronaldo, known for his goal-scoring and athleticism, has won five Ballon d'Or awards. He’s the all-time top scorer in the Champions League and international football. Ronaldo has won multiple league titles and Champions League trophies with Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus. He led Portugal to victory in the 2016 Euros and 2019 Nations League. Page
FOOTBALL ICONS OF INDIA Bhaichung Bhutia Sunil Chhetri Bhaichung Bhutia is perhaps the most famous footballer to have played for India. For long periods of time in the late 90s and 2000s, Bhutia was the lone torch-bearer of Indian football. Especially so after the retirement of Vijayan in 2003. Subimal Chuni Goswamy, known as just Chuni Goswamy, was a gem of a footballer known for his versatility. He was the captain of the Indian team which won the 1962 Asian Games at Jakarta and the silver medal in Asia Cup Soccer tournament (1964) Sunil Chhetri needs no introduction. The Secunderabad-born striker has been the flag- bearer of Indian football in recent times.
