The Indian cobra, also known as the Asian or spectacled cobra, is a species of cobra found throughout South Asia. It can grow up to 2.4 meters long and has a distinctive hood pattern. The cobra preys on small animals like rats and frogs, bringing it into contact with human settlements. Its neurotoxic venom is very dangerous, causing paralysis and respiratory failure in victims. Without treatment, its bite can be fatal. In some areas it is revered, appearing in Hindu iconography protecting Shiva and Vishnu, and is used in snake charming performances.
