Introduction
Snakes are under the kingdom animalia, phylum
chordata, sub phylum vertebrata and class Reptilia.
Snakes are elongated, limbless, carnivorous
reptiles.snakes are ectothermic, amniote vertebrates
covered in overlapping scales. Living snakes are
found on every continent except Antarctica, and on
most smaller land masses. There are two main types
of snakes poisonous and non poisonous
Poisonous snakes
Krait/ Bungarus
• Also known as bengal Krait.
• Most venomous snake.
• The colouration is black or bluish
colour, white crossbars present.
• Elongated cylindrical body.
• Smooth scales
• Head is not differentiated from body.
• Carnivorous
• Oviparous.
• Venom: neurotoxic
Cobra/ Naja Naja
• World's largest venomous snake.
• Body colour is brown to blackish.
• Hood- Expansion of neck and cervical
ribs.
• Monocellate, binocellate(
spectacle),and non-cellate cobras are
found.
• Carnivorous
• Venom: neurotoxic
• Viviparous
• Quick death: respiratory paralysis.
Viper
• Found in rock and bushy areas.
• Pale brown colour.
• Two typesof viper-
• 1. Pitless_ Russel's viper
• 2.Pit viper - Himalayan viper
• Carnivorous
• Venom : neurotoxic
• Viviparous
Non poisonous snakes
Python
• Found in India and indo- china
area.
• Body- large, 8-10m
• Weight- maximum125 kg
• Brown colour, rhomboid dark grey
edge spots.
• Carnivorous
• Oviparous
Rat snake/ Zamenis
• Found in India, Pakistan, Srilanka
& Afganistan.
• Body elongated, greenish or
greenish brown, ventrally pale
yellow.
• Feeds rats and snake- friend of
farmer.
• Bites viciously & coil around the
victim firmly.
• Viviparous
Conclusion
Snakes are the most specialized group of reptiles.
Many species of snake are found all over the world.
Some of which are poisonous and some are not
poisonous. Among poisonous snakes, King Cobra is
considered the most poisonous and is very
dangerous. If the king cobra bites someone, it
becomes difficult to survive. Snakes are found in
large numbers in India, China, and Japan. Snakes are
worshiped in India. On the contrary, they are
considered delicious food in China and Japan.
