Why this topic?
• Kaliganj is an upazila of Satkhira one of the southern coastal
upazila of the country. Consist of large saline land mass and
conserve Mangrove forest.
• Southern coastal areas are greatly contributing in economic
sector of the country. Prawn culture is most important
economic activity of the households of Kaliganj upazila.
Every year Bangladesh earn 196859 million taka from
inland catch fish sector which are 3.61% of the
national GDP and 14.39% of the total fish farming
income of our country (Bangladesh. BBS, 2011).4/12/201

Why this topics (cont’d…)
4/12/20164
Every year this area is suffering from natural and anthropogenic
disasters such as frequent Flooding, Water logging, Salinity, Disease and
epidemics, Prawn virus, Malicious activities, Water pollution and
Drinking water scarcity etc. Frequent Flooding and Water logging is the
predominant disaster of that area.
In Kaligonj upazila 12132.34 hectares area used for shrimp cultivation
and about 4800 metric ton fish producing every year. Till now, maximum
people of our country greatly depend on fish for protein source. For save
this community and those economic and protein source it’s very much
needed to take initiatives.
Objectives of the study:
 To identify the community’s indigenous knowledge in
order to cope with flood and water logging.
 To determine community’s strength and weakness from
the viewpoint of disaster management.
 Analysis and evaluating cost effective practices to gain
more resiliency.

Study area map:
The study was conducted at
different point named
Sannasirchak, kajla, Nalta
and Tarali in Kaligong
under Satkhira district. The
upazila occupies an area of
333.78 sq. km. It is located
between 22°19' and 22°33'
north latitudes and between
88°58' and 89°10' east
longitudes.(Ibrahim, 2012)

community is living in the
floodplain of river, canal or
plain land. Agriculture,
fish farming, capturing
fish are the main occupation
of that area.
We identified that maximum
people have at least a piece
of land for living.
About 25 peoples
occupational strategy are
presented the figure:4/12/201

Canal side Goal tree plantation
Caraway and Goal is a plant with fibrous
root system and highly protect the
depletion of soil from the river bank. Even
though this bio shields/green barrier can
survive in the salt water even in flooded
condition
Micro scale rain water collection
few poor families using own made micro scale rain
water collection system.
We suggest to use low cost ceramic water filter or
activated carbon filter

Strengthen Factors:
Summer season Boats uses for sleep
in night
summer season some young boys
(specially fish farmers) are sleep on boat
at night. Easily they collect four stick and
set four side of the boat (Fig. ). Then easily

Peoples construct house by mud mixing
with husk and straw and entered bamboo
into it. They prefer straw or asbestos shed
rather than tin shed houses. Slight structure

Canal bank erosion
Maximum flood occurred due to
canal bank erosion. low tide

Cannel side unhealthy Toilet
Water quality, rather than access, is the
major hindrance in Bangladesh, especially
in Satkhira district where mineral
contamination has been a big cause of
concern. (ACF, 2014). We observed that
still now some poor and illiterate people

Weakness Factors:
Other Problems of the study
area
⌂ Dumping waste into canal
and excessive siltation
⌂ Uncontrolled Switch gate
⌂ Sanitation quality
⌂ Unavailability of universal
primary education: Peoples
thinking,-education have not
much need in their personal
and professional life.
⌂ Unavailability of drinking

On the eve of finishing…
They born with disaster, growing with disaster and surviving
with disaster. Indigenous practices now a days becoming a part
of the culture with the time being.
Elder people of that area may predict any disaster just seeing
weather phenomena. If those techniques are properly
identified, documented and collaborative with modern
technological knowledge in future this community will be
more resilient in any disaster.

  • 3. Why this topic? • Kaliganj is an upazila of Satkhira one of the southern coastal upazila of the country. Consist of large saline land mass and conserve Mangrove forest. • Southern coastal areas are greatly contributing in economic sector of the country. Prawn culture is most important economic activity of the households of Kaliganj upazila. Every year Bangladesh earn 196859 million taka from inland catch fish sector which are 3.61% of the national GDP and 14.39% of the total fish farming income of our country (Bangladesh. BBS, 2011).4/12/201 6 3
  • 4. Why this topics (cont’d…) 4/12/20164 Every year this area is suffering from natural and anthropogenic disasters such as frequent Flooding, Water logging, Salinity, Disease and epidemics, Prawn virus, Malicious activities, Water pollution and Drinking water scarcity etc. Frequent Flooding and Water logging is the predominant disaster of that area. In Kaligonj upazila 12132.34 hectares area used for shrimp cultivation and about 4800 metric ton fish producing every year. Till now, maximum people of our country greatly depend on fish for protein source. For save this community and those economic and protein source it’s very much needed to take initiatives.
  • 5. Objectives of the study:  To identify the community’s indigenous knowledge in order to cope with flood and water logging.  To determine community’s strength and weakness from the viewpoint of disaster management.  Analysis and evaluating cost effective practices to gain more resiliency. 4/12/20165
  • 6. Study area map: The study was conducted at different point named Sannasirchak, kajla, Nalta and Tarali in Kaligong under Satkhira district. The upazila occupies an area of 333.78 sq. km. It is located between 22°19' and 22°33' north latitudes and between 88°58' and 89°10' east longitudes.(Ibrahim, 2012) Gray color indicating the study area. (Please see the explanation video on nextSource: Kaligonj upazila website-2015 4/12/201 66

  • 8. Materials and Methodology Literature Review Data Collection Secondary Data Collection  Different thesis paper, journals, research publications, books, online articles etc.  News Paper  Website  GoB Database  BBS Study area selection Non participatory Observation Preparation for Final Report Primary Data Collection  Participatory questioner method  Semi structural personal interview  Focus group discussion  Homemade interview  Key informant interview  Transact work Observation Data Processing and Analysis Data verification and Observation Formulation of Objectives For primary data collection we visited different locations and − Transact work − semi-structure individual interview − homemade interview − focused group discussion (FGD) have arranged. 4/12/201 6 8
  • 9. Economic condition Shrimp farmer 48% Farmer 20% Teacher 8% Others 24% Shrimp farmer Farmer Teacher Others community is living in the floodplain of river, canal or plain land. Agriculture, fish farming, capturing fish are the main occupation of that area. We identified that maximum people have at least a piece of land for living. About 25 peoples occupational strategy are presented the figure:4/12/201 6 9
  • 10. Canal side Goal tree plantation Caraway and Goal is a plant with fibrous root system and highly protect the depletion of soil from the river bank. Even though this bio shields/green barrier can survive in the salt water even in flooded condition Micro scale rain water collection few poor families using own made micro scale rain water collection system. We suggest to use low cost ceramic water filter or activated carbon filter 4/12/201 6 10 Strengthen Factors:
  • 11. Summer season Boats uses for sleep in night summer season some young boys (specially fish farmers) are sleep on boat at night. Easily they collect four stick and set four side of the boat (Fig. ). Then easily hangover curtain for safety from mosquito Current status of brick structure due to saline weather Peoples construct house by mud mixing with husk and straw and entered bamboo into it. They prefer straw or asbestos shed rather than tin shed houses. Slight structure are made by bamboo or any porous saline tolerant wood 4/12/201 611
  • 12. locally made Bamboo pools Peoples construct the pools and bridge by bamboo Peoples easily made this bride by using locally available materials and techniques. Conserve captured fish Peoples frequently uses different pot for reserve capture fish. Sometimes pores in wastes pot and reuse it4/12/201612
  • 13. Canal bank erosion Maximum flood occurred due to canal bank erosion. low tide undercurrent frequently damaged the slope Cannel side unhealthy Toilet Water quality, rather than access, is the major hindrance in Bangladesh, especially in Satkhira district where mineral contamination has been a big cause of concern. (ACF, 2014). We observed that still now some poor and illiterate people uses canal side unhealthy toilet4/12/201 6 13 Weakness Factors:
  • 14. Other Problems of the study area ⌂ Dumping waste into canal and excessive siltation ⌂ Uncontrolled Switch gate ⌂ Sanitation quality ⌂ Unavailability of universal primary education: Peoples thinking,-education have not much need in their personal and professional life. ⌂ Unavailability of drinking water collection system ⌂ Conflict among people for Cultivation ⌂ Slope instability of main road ⌂ Unavailability of ElectricityPest attack in a brinjal garden 4/12/201 614
  • 15. On the eve of finishing… They born with disaster, growing with disaster and surviving with disaster. Indigenous practices now a days becoming a part of the culture with the time being. Elder people of that area may predict any disaster just seeing weather phenomena. If those techniques are properly identified, documented and collaborative with modern technological knowledge in future this community will be more resilient in any disaster.
