1) Wireless connectivity is key to enabling the Internet of Things (IoT), and over 10,000 patents related to wireless standards like LTE, WiFi, and Bluetooth were analyzed. 2) Over 3,000 patents held by over 160 assignees were identified as key to wireless connectivity standards for IoT. More than 700 of these patents held by over 30 assignees have potential for litigation. 3) Patent-holding companies like patent assertion entities (PAEs) and non-practicing entities (NPEs) hold most of the high-litigation risk patents, and some patents are being transferred between such companies for purposes of litigation and monetization.
