9. An interview with an ex-VH. Student
Hello! First of all, why
did you choose
your school? Were
you happy with it? If
not why?
Actually I didn’t choose it. I had to go because I
didn’t have any other choices. My exam result was
not good and I wasn’t happy of course. As you
know, the vocational high schools can not give a
good education. There is no guarantee to find a job
after we graduated. And I had some problems with
one of my teachers. He always used slang words
especially to the only girl in our class. That’s why I
changed my school.
10. Did you have
enough
information
before you went
to this school?
Yes but general things such as
those who study there are not
good students, their exam results
are not good so they only can go
to these schools etc.
Had your school got
enough fund from
Ministry to provide
you with good
equipment?
No, they send and we know this as our
school manager was always talking about
that. But he spent money to buy an air
conditioner to our teachers room. And we
couldn’t dare to ask. That attitude really
ground my gears and i have changed my
school.
Thanks Yusuf Kaşıkçı for that great interview.
11. Interview with the headmaster of Vocational Technical and
Industry Hıgh Schools in Batman. ‘’Necati TUNÇ’’
mebk12.meb.gov.tr
What are the reasons that trigger the students to think
about the Vocational High Schools as the last option while
they're making choices for high school education?
We asked him:
12. Mr.TUNÇ:We can divide the reasons into three cathegories.
1)FAMILIES:Families still don't know that their children can enter to universities
without scores being reduced .They don't take into account the desires and skills
of their children. They just want their children to have prestigious jobs such as
doctor, lawyer,engineer or etc.
2)MINISTRY OF EDUCATION:They made so many changes and legislations in order
to regulate the system but it has made the situation more chaotic. They wanted
to make these schools' situation equal to those in Europe but I think there are
mistakes in their regulations. Because they reduced the options of high schools
for students.
3)SCHOOLS:Schools don't have enough qualifications for getting so many
students at the same time.

13. IMECEPTION: With the transformation of general high schools into Anatolian High Schools
there occured a high rise in attendance to Vocational High Schools.Do you think that this rise
is compulsory or a matter of choice? And what will be the biggest contribution to our country
if the vocational training is developed and widespreaded?
Mr.TUNÇ:With new regulations there aren't any differences between
Anatolian high schools and Vocational High Schools while entering the
universities but in Vocational High Schools in addition to other lessons
vocational training is given. For a student who has a low grade
and cannot attend an Anatolian High Schools the only choices are
Vocational or Religious High Schools. Even though he/she doesn't want
to take vocational or religious training there is no other choice .I think this
is partially a compulsory situation. Our country needs too much well-
educated personel on the area of industry. This will contribute to this too
much.

14. We offer German Education
System to fix that problem
The German concept is simple: After students complete their mandatory years of
schooling, usually around age 18, they apply to a private company for a two or
three year training contract. If accepted, the government supplements the
trainee’s on-the-job learning with more broad-based education in his or her field
of choice at a publicly funded vocational school. Usually, trainees spend three to
four days at work and one to two in the classroom. At the end, the theory goes,
they come out with both practical and technical skills to compete in a global
market, along with a good overall perspective on the nature of their profession

16. A brief comparison between
Turkey and Germany
GermanEducationSystem
TurkishEducationSystem
-German students start learning a
profession instead of basic lessons
at an earlier age.
-People’s point of view is
remarkably different for
Vocational Education.
-German children tend to
improve themselves more on their
specific skills because of early
development.

17. What can we do ?
1. Contact our state school board member and
explain the German education system so that
they can teach it to their students and raise
awareness.
2. Contact the governor and tell them we are
concerned about applying German
education to Turkish schools.
