In The Heights tells the story of the residents of Washington Heights over the course of two days. It follows Usnavi, the owner of a local bodega, and other characters in the tight-knit community. In Act 1, Nina returns home from Stanford University having lost her scholarship. Usnavi discovers he sold a winning lottery ticket. In Act 2, Abuela Claudia convinces Usnavi to use the lottery money to move to the Dominican Republic together, while Nina decides to return to Stanford. Throughout, the characters grapple with their dreams and responsibilities to their community.
