Strategic management sits at the highest level of management in large corporations, taking a broad and long-term view. It establishes corporate values, culture, goals, and missions. Under the broad corporate strategy are business-level and functional unit strategies. Corporate strategy determines which businesses the company will compete in and how being in those businesses creates synergies. Business strategy focuses on strategies for a single business or strategic business unit to achieve competitive advantage. Functional strategies include marketing, product development, human resources, and others, with a shorter-term focus on meeting departmental objectives.
