The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

4. Parsley is a small herb with dark green leaves that is
popularly used as a garnish to different soups and
dishes due to its fragrant aroma being emitted by its
flavorful leaves. However, not many people know that
this little green herb does not only offer a delicious
taste and fresh twist to our dishes but this very popular
herb also contains invaluable healing properties and
numerous medicinal benefits.
What is parsley?
5. The health benefits of parsley include
controlling cancer, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis,
along with helping prevent osteoporosis.
Furthermore, it acts as a pain reliever with anti-
inflammatory properties. It also provides relief from
gastrointestinal issues such as indigestion, stomach
cramps, bloating, and nausea, while helping to
strengthen the immune system.
Parsley
6.
7. Parsley can be found throughout the year on the
market. It is a cheap leaf that anyone can get a hold
of. It is also a highly nutritious plant and has
ample vitamins and antioxidants which can greatly
improve our health.
Parsley
8. It has been cultivated by man for more than 2,000 years and was
highly regarded in Greek culture, since it was used in various
ceremonies. The Romans also used it in many ways. Pliny the
Elder, a 1st century AD historian, wrote that it was consumed by
people from all walks of life. At first, it was used only as a medicinal
plant, but later on, it was consumed as food. There are many myths
and fables associated with the origin and growth of this plant in
many Mediterranean and European cultures. The Greeks believed
that it had sprung up from the blood of the fallen Greek hero
Archemorus. Thus, Greeks started associating it with death and
destruction, but in the Middle Ages, parsley was included in folklore
medicines and it slowly gained popularity. This is possibly how the
image of parsley as a health giver developed.
Parsley
9. Parsley, a predominantly tropical plant, needs moisture
and ample sunlight to grow. It is used as herb, a green
leafy vegetable, and as a spice. It is actually used in two
forms: leaf and root. Both the leaf and the root are used in
Mediterranean and European cuisines. It is consumed in
many different ways, including garnishing, salads, stocks,
and sandwiches. The leaf is further divided into two more
types: curly leaf and flat leaf. The root form is a new
addition, which only began to be cultivated about 300
years ago, and was first grown in Hamburg, Germany.
Nowadays, root parsley is steadily becoming more and
more popular.
Parsley
10. The nutrients found in parsley include vitamin
A, vitamin K, vitamin C, vitamin E,
thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, vitamin
B12, pantothenic acid, choline,
folates, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese,
phosphorous, potassium, zinc, and copper. It is also
a very good source of volatile compounds such as
myristicin, limonene, eugenol, and alpha-thujene.
Its leaves contain energy, carbohydrates, fat, and
protein.
Nutritional Value Of Parsley
12. 1.Parsley as Anti-Diabetic
Properties:
Traditionally, parsley was used as
a medicine for diabetes in Turkey.
In order to scientifically validate
this claim, research was
conducted at Marmara University
in Istanbul, Turkey. The research
showed evidence that diabetic
rats that were given parsley
actually showed a decrease in
their blood sugar levels over a
period of a month. The research
indicates that it can be used for
diabetic control.
13. 2. Parsley Controls Rheumatoid
Arthritis:
Parsley has also been
particularly effective against
rheumatoid arthritis.
Compounds such as vitamin C
and beta-carotene found in the
herb possess anti-inflammatory
properties that help in
controlling arthritis. Consuming
it regularly is also believed to
speed up the process of uric
acid removal, which has been
linked to symptoms of arthritis
14. 3. Parsley as Anti-Carcinogenic
Properties
Zheng, Kenney and Lam from LKT
Laboratories in Minneapolis,
Minnesota have extracted a
compound named myristicin, which is
a phenylpropane compound,
from parsley oilextract. Preliminary
investigation into the myristicin
compound had revealed that it has
anti-carcinogenic properties.
Myristicin extract from the herb was
only tested on rats and human
application of this compound still
remains to be seen.
15. 4. Parsley as Anti-Inflammatory
Properties:
Parsley has traditionally been used
in the Mediterranean region for
toothaches, bruises, insect bites, and
rough skin. According to
preliminary studies conducted at the
King Saud University by Al-Howiriny
et al., parsley displayed anti-
inflammatory and anti-hepatotoxicity
properties. The anti-inflammatory
properties reduce in internal
inflammations, while the anti-
hepatotoxic properties help to
cleanse the liver.
16. 5. Parsley for Osteoporosis:
Parsley is effective in cases of
osteoporosis and is helpful in
maintaining bone health.
Osteoporosis occurs due to depleted
levels of calcium in the bones and
also due to an amino acid called
homocysteine. This amino acid can
be broken down by the intake of folic
acid. Due to this aspect, apart from
dairy products and vegetables,
parsley is regarded as one of the
best sources of calcium. It also
contains an appropriate amount of
folic acid, which may break down
homocysteine.
17. 6. Parsley have Diuretic effects:
For many centuries now, parsley has been
used as a diuretic that helps in controlling
various diseases such as kidney stones,
urinary tract infections, and gallbladder
stones. Edema is a medical condition
where a patient retains fluid in the body
more than what he or she is supposed to
hold under normal circumstances. The
body swells because of fluid accumulation.
If you are afflicted by this condition, a few
teaspoons of parsley juice can provide
some quick relief. The roots of the herb are
also very much useful in counteracting
kidney stones. Adding its roots to boiling
water and drinking it on a daily basis is
known to be effective as a general
cleanser for the body.
18. 7. Parsley Strengthens the Immune
System:
The vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants
found in parsley are helpful for
strengthening immunity. Vitamins such as
vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin K, folate, and
niacin each act on different aspects of the
immune system. Vitamin A acts directly on
lymphocytes or white blood cells, thereby
increasing their effect.
The chlorophyll contained in it has anti-
bacterial and anti-fungal properties as
well. Studies have showed that the
herb contains antioxidant properties and
antibacterial properties, making it an ideal
source for various home remedies.
19. 8. Parsley Fights cancer
Studies reveal that the essential
oil of parsley contains myristicin,
an organic compound that inhibits
that does not only prevents the
formation of lung tumors but also
activates glutathione-S-
transferase enzyme that help
fight oxidized molecules.
Myristicin also assists in fighting
prostate and colon cancers by
neutralizing carcinogens, such as
benzopyrene in smokes of
cigarettes.
20. 9. Parsley Rich in antioxidants
Parsley has been found to be
rich in various antioxidants,
such as luteolin, a flavonoid
that eliminates free radicals
in the body. It also removes
toxins from the body and
encourages carbohydrate
metabolism. The high level of
zea-xanthin found in parsley
prevents macular
degeneration, an eye
disease caused by aging.
21. 10. Parsley as Effective inflammatory
agent
Parsley contains luteolin and
vitamin C that is an effective
anti-inflammatory agent of
the body. Regularly eating
parsley helps prevent
inflammatory illnesses, such
as rheumatoid arthritis,
osteoarthritis, arthritis, and
certain types of cancers.
Likewise, applying parsley to
areas with insect bites
reduce inflammation
22. 11. Parsley Strengthens bones
Parsley is a nutritious organic
food that is rich in Vitamin K. Two
tablespoons of parsley contains
153% RDA of Vitamin K, which
makes our bones stronger and
prevents build-up of calcium in
our tissues that may result to
stroke, atherosclerosis, and other
cardiovascular disease. Vitamin K
also plays an important role in
healing Alzheimer’s disease by
regulating the neuronal damage
in the brain.
23. 12. Parsley Removes gallstones
When bile acids and
cholesterol in the
gallbladder becomes hard,
they develop into tiny
deposits of stones, more
commonly known as
gallstones.
24. 13. Parsley Wards off cardiovascular
diseases
Researches showed that
parsley contains Vitamin B9,
also known as folate, which
protects the body from
cardiovascular diseases,
such as atherosclerosis,
heart attack, and stroke.
Vitamin B9 also remove
homocysteine in the body;
hence, keeping the heart
healthy.
25. 14. Parsley Eliminates strong mouth
odor
Parsley is a wonderful
natural breath freshener that
eliminates the pungent smell
in the mouth. Drinking
parsley juice or nibbling
parsley leaves after eating
foods that have intense odor,
such as garlic or onion, can
assist in releasing the strong
mouth odor.
26. 15. Parsley Remedy for anemia
The benefits of parsley are
vast. They include almost
everything -- from helping
people suffering from
anemia and bad breath to
baldness, even cancer
and stroke!
27. Studies revealed that parsley can be beneficial to
women as it helps prevent breast cancer, promotes
delayed menstruation and relieves premenstrual
pain. Sprigs of parsley are used as vaginal insert to
relax the cervix and trigger menstruation.
16. Parsley Relieves menstrual pain
